I mean is it worth spending that much to get a song good or try and get funding by NZ on air. Plus any recomendations where the best places are to record in Welly. At the moment INCA Studios is up there
If you're going to spend that much on recording, you're gonna get a good recording out of it. The band must be feeling pretty good about the song they're spending the money on..
Sorry to pop peoples bubble. The best studio in NZ costs $150 an hour or like $1200 a day. The best engineer costs about the same. I doubt any person in their right mind would be able to spend $2000 on one song in NZ.
recording is just half of it bro. Keeping nz on air happy is a big task, they give you UP TO $5000, if you give them a shit song, they are not going to give you a grant again. If you have mates who do you favours for recording, when you have no cash, they won't and they shouldn't when you have $5000.
Spending money on getting the hell drum kit, get 4 or 5 snares, borrow, hire whatever,
get yourself a bunch of guitars, some nice old tube amps. Call in every favour. Get someone the band respects to produce, and pay them some good money for there time. Get a kick ass photographer :) to come in a photograph. (for some reason NZ on air don't think this should be paid for...arrgghh)
$2000 is just over 1 day if you go to marmalade or york street. But as stated there are tons more kick ass studios out there charging a fraction of what they charge
When people know you have $5000 they charge you full fucking rates.."mates rates" out the door.
bic rungas album cost $200,000.
the phaze 4 scheme (rubicon, betchadupa, che fu, etc) puts up 50 grand and expects the record label to do the same. that's a bit more than 2g a song ain' it.
goodshirts album sounds fuckin great to my ears and they did it themselves. they took their time and concentrated on the music - not thinking about how much it was costing them.
this is good.
NZ on Air gives bands $5000 to record one song for NZ radio
its seems like bit of an overkill
but it can get spent pretty easily.
It is worth going for the funding
but chances are, if you are in anyway interesting
you will not get it.
But if you are serious about the band then you really have to put your money where your mouth is.You do have to be seen in the best possible light and unfortunately that takes money.
For wellington try nineeleven studios.. the owner/operator is pretty onto it when it comes to music.
as for spending $2000 ... well that's up to you, but for one song I think it's pretty excessive..that's like what.. $680/minute for an average song
Perhaps I am just a cheap bastard. :)
is this refernce to 1qa?
$2000 is crazy to spend on one song, if for demo purposes only to get a grant from nz on air....$300-$500 per song is a bit more realistic. If you are going to bypass nz on air and record an ep...by all means.
It is fucking easy to spend $5000 on one song, i just watched it happen with a band i was taking photos of this weekend.
2 days in the studio recording + engineer $3000
producer $1000
mixing + mastering $500- $1000
if you want it done right for radio, that is what it costs, if you don't need nz on air to love you and get a radio hit, fuck it...$2000 should get you a whole fucking ep.
It is for 1QA. They are paying around $400 to do 6 demos. those demos are then getting sorted and selected and sent off to see which would be best for radio, then $2000 for the selected song. Hopefully NZ ON AIR will see that they are on to it and give them a grant
:) shit is it that easy to get a grant.......shiat, why didn't i think of that (sic)
forget about nz on air, they will come around eventually, just do some shit on your own. Make sure whatever you do if you are gonna spend $2000 with no funding that you release some fucking songs. Put out an EP, even that 1 day rockquest prize recording you guys did at marmalade last year was almost good enough to release. Whatever happens, make sure something gets out there to the punters.
If you really want a grant from nz on air, pay that $2000 to Matty J Ruys to write a song for ya :)
'orkid recorded it's debut 14 track album at there own house for about $2000 that includes food etc for the three days, plus another $2200 for pressing thats an album finished for $4200 and it sounds better than the new feelers album.........
studios are a thing of the past, , make your own
give 'orkid a grant of $5000 and we'll make another album plus a video and doco about the band, a tour of the sth island and the chance to make people happy (tee he he he he he)
