Yank needs nz music recommendations

First, I should say, that being an Amerikan and all, I know less than zilch about New Zealand music. All I know is what I've heard from a friend who fell in love with the sound back in the 90s. Since then, she says she's been having trouble finding that type of music anymore, and that most of her NZ faves have all gone in a direction that, well, doesn't suit her tastes. Although she can appreciate other sounds, she so misses that particular sound that she's growing disillusioned and splotchy. Can anybody help her out with recommendations. Some of her old faves (in the--early?--90s) were Cake Kitchen, Chris Knox, Garageland, Peter Jefferies. And if it helps to isolate this particular genre, she also likes the Coffee Sergeants, Grains of Faith, and old Sebastian & Belle. Please help. Thank you.

Forums: NZ Music,

Yeah...i reckon you may like PINE. They're from the South Island...Christchurch and big fans of Belle and sebastian, Elliot smith, Lucksmiths etc...kind of the same vein you seem to be talking about.

They've released and EP last year called speeding and their debut album LongPlayer is due out on June...chuck your address to ben@archhill.co.nz and they'll send a copy over.

For more info check their site at http://www.readymade.co.nz or the label at archhill recording http://www.archhill.co.nz.

Other bands on the label are Fang, David Mulcahey, Lanky which you may like too

cheers stephen

I can definately empythise with this one.

Frankly there's not much around at present in the NZ music scene that comes any where near to the stuff you mentioned. Closest would be the album done 2 years ago by Lanky which had former members of the JPS Experience in it (flying nun records fav.) Another would be an indie release by a band called the Aesthetics - go to Crawlspace records on KRoad to find out more...

Other than these she might be better to find some more out there stuff from that era in NZ music such as Bailterspace, the Skeptics, Straitjacket Fits, This Kind Of Punishment, The Veralines.

Wouldn't really bother with Flying Nun Records of late 'cause, aside from new stuff from Graeme Downes, David Kilgour, The Clean etc. - those NZ faves, they're playing it safe, accessible and boring (my bias opinion of course) - new people at the lable have a different approach to who they sign.

If Bell and Sebastian's on the menu then maybe she would like Arab Strap, newish band from Scotland(pretty good)

crawlspace closed down :(

//crawlspace closed down :( //

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@$#%

What?,Why?,How?,When?

I know it is horrible! I am moving to auckland in a week and god it leaves this huge void in auckland for me.

Eh. Why the fuck did it close down?. It made K'road having a shop like that

it closed for the same reason most places close i guess..
not enough $$$
sad i know
but the good news is
in its last few weeks everything was half price...
oh yeah $10 cds

phoenix foundation, cassette, chicane, pluto, mestar, stereo bus and maybe give Dimmer a try?
Definitely check out Lanky and David Kilgour's new one.
If you want to delve into the past then bailter space, Hell is other people, superette, bressa creeeting cake.

They're all available in video or MP3 on this website and all on heavy rotate on the radio.

Even though they are Scottish, and this is a nz music site, Arab Strap are highly recommended.

they are good

off topic but is there a connection between Arab Strap and the Belle & Sebastian album "Boy With an Arab Strap" or coincidence?
eh, it has been nagging me.

Hi, it's the Amerikanski again. Thanks for all the good suggestions. I've been tracking down their MP3s, and my computer has actually let me play a couple. It seems Arab Strap is a superb choice, as is Mr Kilgour, Pine, and some others. I'm slowly making my way through the recommendation, and noticing the same musicians seem to turn up time and again. Rather an incestuous bunch it seems. Does anyone know whether someone has put together a "tree" showing various musicans and the bands they've been in? Just curious. Oh, and way the by, Able Tasmans is another from this genre, is it not.
Anyway, thank you all. You're being ever so helpful. I'm sure my friend will be delighted with this new fix of sound.

Yeah the Able Tasmans were great, should try them to. Had Graeme Humphries as lead vocal who now has become a (very) minor NZ TV celebrity. Also had Chris Knox in their earlier stuff.

There is a bit of a early Flying Nun tree in Mathew Bannisters book called 'Positively George St'. It only really covers the early bands though. It would be good to do a more updated one.

For example our Arch Hill bands are all pretty intertwined with the afore mentioned JPSE and Superette
Dave Mulcahy (album Oddy Knocky) was in JPSE and Superette
Lanky (album Wait) has Jim from JPSE and Rob from the Cakekitchen and Noel from David Kilgour band. It is nice that a lot of people like that album so much - it's just a shame more people didn't actually get out and buy it.
Fang (album Origin of Species - and a new one coming) has Ben from Superette
Ben & Greta (no release but on Introducing Arch Hill compilation) has, er, Ben and Greta from Superette
and Pine...well theyare from Christchurch...does that count?

yeah stefan. they are both scottish and have played on each others stuff, as well as sharing record labels at one point. should checkout "the reindeer section" which is a side project/album featuring members of both bands, plus mogwai members and a whole bunch of other scottish bands. appearently they were inspired to do an album after seeing a lou barlow gig. dunno if this is troo but its a good story.
back to the subject of good nz music...hey ignorant, anything on StinkBuzz recordings is a sure-fire winner ! (shameless self-promo!!!)

sweet, cheers Mr. Buzz.

stuart mogwai & aidan arab strap have a new band together too - cannae remember what it's called though ... i do remember mogwai hate belle & sebastian though.
the 'arab strap' thing is to do with the strange scottish sense of humour ... (i dont think these bands are nearly as miserablist as one would think) ... an 'arab strap' is a sexual device, which you can do yourself - or your favourite male - considerable & painful damage with.
The AB's were taking the piss when they called themselves that, B&S took it a step further by giving it to a boy.

The band is called The Sick Anchors. Should be a good one. Both stuart and aidan have been working on and off for ages.

ok, chicken and egg. which came first the band name or the B&S album title?

def. the band. they've done about 6 albums now ...

cool. cheers. wow. need money.

The Sick Anchors do a mean cover of Whole Again, by Atomic Kitten.

Stuart plays it solo as well. I really want to hear this eh

can I possibly suggest the (sadly now gone) Daemon for Mr Ignorant?
Definately one of NZ's top albeit rare moments in black metal. Yes it is a slight veering away from the previous preferences mentioned, however there was always a lo-fi sensibility and pop-esque undertone drowning underneath their 'music'.
word.

ahh. yes Daemon. i used to crack that album out all the time, I used to work with this guy called Damon and we used to laugh at him all the time cause evryone called him damien and he got really angry, so we bought him that cd as a joke, but being th bogan that he was he ended up loving it, and the rest of us didn't mind it as well.
