Channel Z are less shit than they were

Good to see that the Z playlist is widening beyond the realms of pap pop and nu metal shite. I do believe I may have heard the like of the White Stripes & the Hives gracing the waves? Or did I dream it...

Forums: NZ Music,

yeah they are playing cool stuff like the strokes etc but I heard they're changing their format to one more like ZM.... and ZM in turn are changing theirs to match Channel Z. AND then auckland is getting the edge and that will ALSO be that format. Where do we turn?

> Where do we turn?

Off? ;)

*cough*

Let me see, surprises, Pete Yorn, The White Stripes, Ugly Duckling (albeit late at night), Soul Wax (about bloody time damn that album has been out for years now), Timo Maas (though it is a crossover song, so eh). Ryan Adams is a big surprise, he belongs on ZM or Classic Hits or So You Want to Fall Alsleep FM, bleh.

hey man, Adams is in the "alt-country" section at Real Groovy which makes him perfectly acceptable to play on a rawk station :->

What I want to know is how someone qualifies for an alt-country tag vs a rock tag or a plain old country tag. It strikes me as fairly arbitrary. For example:

Black Crows: Rock
Ryan Adams/Whiskytown: Alt-Country ( except for Summer of 69 which rocks out :-> )
Willie Nelson: Country
Johnny Cash: He must be alt-country since he's signed to American Recordings and has done all those covers
Cassette: Rock? I'd say so after that gig at Indigo but the music on the EP leans more to alt-country. Then again, the EP is called Emo, which I am informed is another genre all together.

dude, its because he wears eyeliner. dont you know ANYTHING? geez...

And here I was thinking he just had a hangover. Does that mean Kiss are alt-country with "Hard Luck Woman"?

of course. i mean, what else would you catagorise them as? :->

Garth Brooks ruined that band

At the risk of being attacked, I like Ryan Adams. I don't give a toss what 'genre' he falls into (appropriately or otherwise).

alt country grew out of the whole uncle tupelo / whiskytown / palace brothers thing in the early mid-90s - guy from uncle tupelo is now in wilco ....
You can pretty much trace a line back from those who accept the alt.country label for their music to Gram Parsons, originator of "Amercian Cosmic Music" which got vaseleine-and-broomsticked' by bands like the eagles and become country-rock and AOR easy FM styles.
Other alt.country bands / musicians include: son volt, lambchop, handsome family, gillian welch, steve earle, towndes van zandt ...
A varierty of low-fi acts are alos sometimes 'crossovered' to alt.country- eg smog, folk implosion.
Stefan, Adams ain't so bad - get away from the radio singles, you may even like it ? ;-)
NZ alt.country acts?? I know range have always said they're in that area unashamedly. You could argue it for Cassette too, and not just cos they like a drink and play slide guitar - there is a strong lineage from the music of Cassette to Gram Parsons in my humble opinion ....
Class dismissed - anyhting to add noizyboy? ;-)

the definitive (and original) voice on the subject

Don't get me wrong, I quite like him too. I was played a Whiskytown album and it was very good indeed.

I guess I have an odd fascination with genres and how different bands/artists get put in them. And how wanky they can sound at times. Alt-country is the worst example of said wankery.

that's what happens when you leave 20 minutes between typing and hitting "Add comment". Nice summary, spilly.

Ummm, I'd maybe add The Renderers to the NZ alt-country lineup, but no-one else springs immediately to mind.

spilly -- that was a lesson and a half. nice one.

Just a small note to add to the alt.country thing - last months Uncut magazine ran a feature on it, tracing the development from the Flying Burritto Brothers through to the guys spilly mentions and even provided a nice CD of various alt.country bands - I ended up doing a 3 hour special show on alt.country after reading that article (which made for a very expensive visit to Wellington).

Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown - not so keen on Gold, but the earlier music is very good.

Could also add David Gray to this list. Some of his songs are amazing.

I don't think I'd call David Gray alt-country. Dana Eclair?
I've heard Whiskeytown are supposed to be good, maybe I'll check them out one day.
As for Ryan Adams solo, spilly you say his non-radio stuff is good? I'll give him a chance.
Just don't go telling me John Mayer is god, ugh.

its all good playin more "alternative" bands, but when they play one song repeatedly that sucks, white stripes mite be good but hotel yorba is gettin annoying, its good that they're playin new stuff, but not just one song thats repeated often, thats just not cricket

psst, they play "Fell in Love With a Girl" now.

they used to play that hotel song by white stripes like EVERY morning.....argh!

well when ive listened to it, thats the song ive heard, i listen to active more than anything else now... what i want to hear is some deja voodoo! today tomorrow timaru, or ur boyfriend sucks... thats quality music ;)

Don't forget the love song of our times...the anthemic 'Feelings'..YOU FUCKING SUCK DEJA VOODOO!

feelings, by deja voodoo is one of the greatest & most romantic love songs seen in both the 20th & 21st century... if u listen to the lyrics u will realise this
deja voodoo have no peers, they r in a league of their own.
the lyrics form to make THE greatest love song EVER!!!

Oh yeah? For the best lyrics you'll ever be likely to hear this century, check out both new Tom Waits albums, "Alice" and "Blood Money" - sheer brilliance.

i still don't listen to it but i did listen to bomber for about 30mins 3 weeks ago, and he still sucks. that show serves to feed his ego more than anything else. god he can talk.

i hate how he talks with the music in the background, and everytime he pauses, he turns the music up, and then back down again when he opens his gob. very irritating.

i'm guessing thats an automatic levels thingie. its all tech these days

nah, i think he does it on purpose.

anyway, its irritating all the same! :P
