heyall, my name is kristen, i am from australia, and currently studying music business management. for my major project i am exploiting my love for new zealand music by means of a publicity, promotions and touring company. i think a large problem that kiwi music has is the small market place, and i would like to help expose nz music to the world, starting with australia. my project will hopefully culminate with a showcase tour of nz music, so i was wondering which group of bands you would suggest would have the greatest hope of success in aus. Obviously, shihad, crowded house and split enz are already australian ;) so maybe these bands could be the headline acts (well, neil and tim finn) along with some other promising acts. at the moment, this is all hypothetical, but i hope to put my plans into action when i finish school. i would like to hear from australians, nzers living in aus, well everybody i guess. thanks, kristen

another thing, if anybody is interested ...
another thing, if anybody is interested in music swapping, ie, you make nz music compilation and send it to me, i make aus comp and send it to you, please email me kristen_is_the_best@hotmail.com this will expose me to some of the less known kiwi bands who get zero airplay in aus, and you will get a taste for good aussie music too. works for everyone...bye byes...kristen

Heres a thought... BUY some fucking NZ music.
If you want them to be a success overseas, getting people to burn you compilations is the wrong way to go about it.
i totally agree with you martha, but ...
i totally agree with you martha, but how often do you buy records without hearing at least a small sample. i do buy a lot of nz music, i would buy a lot more if i had good exposure, which is what i am asking for. im not the bad guy here, im not explioting the music, i am interested in promoting kiwi music, obviously you dont understand that. if i hear good music i buy it, if i dont hear music, i dont buy it. which do you think is going to pump more money into the industry???

So, Kersten, what kinds of sounds are you into. Since there's a big anti-burning sentiment on at the moment with Kiwi music (and there is room to debate whether a burnt compilation sent internationally helps or hinders local musos), how about telling us the kiwi bands you've already heard, what spins your wheels, and maybe we can point you in the direction of some other cool NZ sounds. There's a pretty good website of NZ mp3's I am pointing you to as well, for you to sample.

go the burnt compilation i say. I ...
go the burnt compilation i say. I wouldn't make it myself because of all the precious nz bands who would get upset at there loss of tiny royalties. But when was the last time a nz band charged an oversea's record label to listen to one of their cd's. If anyone one from oversea's said...hey send me a cd, I'll try and make an effort to get you heard...and they weren't talking out there ass...then why not?
Spastic, have you been hearing much about...fur patrol, cassette, betchadupa.... 3 nz bands making ago of it over there, what are your thoughts on these bands.

I read Kristen's post and smiley as indicating she knew that but with a sly reference to the Australian tendency to steal our stuff.

Kristen Regarding your main question ...

Regarding your main question (which seems to be largely ignored thus far), it depends whether you want commercial radioplay type bands or ones that are a little rougher around the edges, but have definite potential in their own niches around the world.
For commercial type acts, I'd recommend: Garageland, The Feelers, Stellar*, Anika Moa, Betchadupa, Pluto, Bic Runga and Fiona McDonald.
For artists with a less commercial, but potential worldwide appeal in niche areas, I recommend: High Dependency Unit, Pitch Black, The Datsuns, Dimmer, The D4, Micronism, The Nomad, and The Subliminals.
Details of these artists are probably on this site. Otherwise I would just plug their names in to search engines and see what you find.
have fun...

thanks for all your replies so far.. ...
thanks for all your replies so far.. the bands that already have a following in australia include betchadupa, who i saw live a few weeks ago, fur patrol are playing a few gigs around town, i think they are actually based here now? shihad and crowded house have won ARIA awards, hence the "australian" tag. zed have a bit of a following. im mainly into pop/rock type stuff, and obviously that is what i will concentrate on, as it is impossible to promote music you dont love. to 999natas999, i would listen to cds in shops, but a lot of bands dont have an australian distribution company, this is what i am trying to acheive for you. i would also love to sample music on the net, but i dont have my own computer, my access is limited to net cafes, and therefore i cannot download anything. thanks for the help so far, i appreciate it heaps....kristen
