i reckon the Governments 20% New Zealand Music Quota funding Project is just a waste of Taxpayers money. sure it gives Kiwis the change to show the rest of the world what talent we have but 90% of new zealand music is utter rubbish - this NZ Music Funding Project and "20% of airtime on radio and TV" is a stoo[id project developed by Comrade Clark and Mr. Neanderton as part of a Communist Takeover of New Zealand, it dictates what music Radio and television Stations HAVE to play for 1/5th of their Airtime, i reckon it should be axed, us taxpayers want talented musicians not posuer pop stars or rock bands who play music which went outta style in the states 9 or 10 years ago.

Umm, radio stations covered by the voluntary quota choose the song they play according to their 'format'. That means that you'll still be getting what you call Posuer pop stars on stations like ZM quota or no.
Rather than attacking the govt, who are just asking for Kiwi music whatever the format, and call up the stations. Tell them what you as a punter want to hear.
And as a taxpayer (and I pay a lot of it), I'd find you're gross generalisation of my musical taste to be quite confusing if not offensive.

it seems you take offense rather too easily.
i don't care what happens with my tax dollars (and i don't pay a lot of it).
and i think quotas are dangerous. bands should be there on their merits and if they're good enough, they'll get played on the stations that cater for their style. don't bother asking ZM to start playing trinity roots or chris knox cos it's just not going to happen.

sorry, just a little piss-take. I forgot to add the stupid :->
//don't bother asking ZM to start playing trinity roots or chris knox cos it's just not going to happen.
That was my point - stations are still going to play music that fits their format.

Mike Chunn talked about this on a Wellington TV programme about the quota. He said that it's harder to get NZ music on ZM style radio in NZ because programmers actually have to listen to the songs rather than just play what was a hit in Australia, the UK or the US. He said that when NZ On air distributed Hit Discs in the past the cds were chucked in the bin. Bands counldn't get there on their merits because they were never heard. It was only when NZ On Air started using pluggers to promote the artists on the Hit Discs that NZ music started getting played.
The quota means that the onus isn't just on NZ On Air to promote NZ music. It means that programmers have to work with labels, major and indie, and NZ On Air to find the music that meets their format. I don't think that's particularly dangerous.
Oh, and don't give up on hearing Trinity Roots on Top 40 radio. Those guys are top notch.

I thought it's kinda ironic that NZ On Air with funding schemes & these quotas and all, and all the unoriginal shite that NZ On Air-funded bands put out, we're essentially supporting American music anyway.. blah (there are exceptions heh)

There is essentially problems with the way New Zealand on Air funds but at the moment at least the these "American sounding" bands are New Zealand people actually doing stuff. Compared to 5 years ago i'm glad there's is more New Zealanders on the radio even if they sound like overseas stuff at least they are getting the leg up to then go on and put their flavour into their music, and to steal what someone else has said "at least it's our american shit!"
