i got givenaticket to the gig,soI went along to check it out...... im not a tool fan, but I was quite keen on seeingThe Melvins... Tool seemed to put a lot of effort into their stage presence,.,there was skinny freakish people crawling around the stage like the people in their videos which seemed to get the crowd going..... they seemed to play all their songs well, that I recognized. I was expecting The Melvins to be more 'grungy' I suppose, but they were kinda metally which I wasnt prepared for.... all in all it was good because I didnt have to pay to get in, but thebands did put a lot of effort into exciting the fans.
There was about 7 times more people than there was last time, the centre was almost packed to capacity. tool mentioned that they would be back soon. oh yay...... after tool i got drunk. fun fu n fun....................................

I am definately a Tool fan and i loved every bit of it. I thought the Melvins were alright, they seemed to be able to play really well but it just came out as a noise rather than having any meaning or depth to it, which i hated. Tool were amazing, right from the build up of tension as the circle of eyes came up to when they walked offstage. Their stage presence is amazing, and the whole thing was even bigger and better than the last one. Someone said afterwards that it seemed like the last one was a practise run for this one and thats about it, it was. Their songs were recognisable, but they still sounded different from the recorded versions which was awesome cos last time they sounded almost exacty alike. And Maynard just rocked, as always!
As I said in the other ...
As I said in the other thread.....
IT WAS SOOOOOOOO AWESOME! Nothing will ever ever beat that concert... no local support. The Melvins were ok, nice metal band.
But TOOL are sooooo cool & I was right up at the front, not centre, but right side of stage. Adam was blocking my view of Maynard, who was on opposite side from me & @ back, but I could see Justin & Danny ok. Adam had his back to me also for a lot.
OMG, I don't wanna give away the special thing... Ppl going to Welly & Auck, the coolest thing happens.... You'll prob know what I mean when you see, no-one say anything til Sunday, don't spoil surprise :) It is really strange, you'll be amazed.
Lowlights were not enough songs from Ænima being played... Only Stinkfist if I remember rightly, my faves are Eulogy & Jimmy & Hooker With A Penis & Disgustipated & Ænema but they weren't played :(
Lateralus songs were really great. Crowd went wild in Lateralis.
Ummmm... Maynard was wearing wig & gas mask kinda thing @ start but he took it off eventually & had half of face painted black. Took off shirt, but not pants like last year. He also said he'd be back.. yay!
I can't think of anything else to say right now. Ears... ringing...
G'night all
(PS, if you live in Wellington or Auckland, it's not too late to buy tickets, I swear it's soooo worth it!)

Wish They'd played Ænima & Hooker with a Penis sooo much, but nah, I still loved it all.

sober, wicked. i guess they didnt play much aenima (how do u get that thingie?) cos they did so last time. want to keep it fresh aye. i was disappointed to see that parabol/parabola wasnt played as a package - thats the way it should be. i spose it woulda went off anyway.

Well, on my PC you hold down alt & press 0 1 9 8 on the keypad. Awww, I love all the Ænima songs so much :(
If it counts I thought I head Die Eier Von Satan's intro, but no more. Some reviews @ toolshed down confirmed this. I think I might have heard a bit of HWAP as well, but I love that song to much, I may have imagined it.

heh, just got up.
Well if Slim played I missed them.
The Melvins, very interesting as everyone has mentioned expecting grunge got a mix of prog metal ala Tool and some grungier stuff towards the end. It was like they played one continuos song, no breaks. My god the singer in the Melvins has the wickedest white boy aff ever.
Now judging Tool on the last time they came to Wellington (1996?) boy have they come a long long way. Maynard James Keenan had a black stripe down the middle of his face, standing somewhat elevated infront of small screen while two bigger screens hung above. He showed everyone his perfected alien movements throughout, with people calling his name for some reason between songs.
The visuals on the screens during songs were surreal and aptingly fitting, sometimes borrowing from the song's video clip or visuals made for that song but in similar style to their video efforts. This setup cemented the art rock label they have been given by many especially when two interpretive dance people were hung from ropes above the stage, naked, swinging and convulsing to the music.
Tool are leading the way for the death of moshing (this is good) only some parts of songs could be jumped up and down to, the rest you were better off moving to the rhythm. In time people will learn.
During the set a break was taken where they played the video clip for Parabola, an awesome clip featuring Tricky no less. The night ended with Aenima, Mr. Keenan dressed in swimwear and when they song ended they teased the punters by getting in a huddle, "oh encore" and then leaving, cue lights.

Awwww... We didn't have soon, just that they'd be back. From the reviews on toolshed down, it sounds as if the Welly mosh was pretty violent... maybe thats why? Or maybe Maynard just forgot to say that
hmm, I worked my way closer and closer ...
hmm, I worked my way closer and closer during the night, I ended up sort of close to the front and there was plenty of room to move, lots of people toking up. I thinked they were pissed off when dumbasses would clap and clap at a quiet or slow part of a song as if that would make it faster and harder. Wellington people just don't get it me thinks.
Hmmm, the middle of the mosh didn't ...
Hmmm, the middle of the mosh didn't look very friendly here.. The ppl right on barrier (me) didn't get pushed around much, but the ppl behind me got shoved over in a big wave once or twice. I'm soooo glad I was where I was. I was never planning to be in middle, either right at barrier or somewhere @ the back. Nothing can beat front tho, I'll never regret being there.

Oh yeah some of my fav concert moments have been from the front, ie Shihad at the Town Hall, Supergrass...
I only noticed one wave in Wgtn.
i agree about about tool not being ...
i agree about about tool not being moshy. i was right at the back, by the doors with 1 other chick and i don't think i jumped up and down once, there's no need. You're supposed to FEEL tool, not pointlesslyjump up and down to it. Someone who was up the front, but slightly back commented bout all the people who seemed to have gone only so they could see how hard-out they could go, stupid
i could tell by the pit action and the ...
i could tell by the pit action and the surgance of the songs that everything seemed sweet and sound (my posse in the back row by the control room). a lot of the mellower tunes were played. but when things started to get really het up, as tradition permits the pit went spastic. as per usual.
I think I need to listen to Tool CD's ...
I think I need to listen to Tool CD's more. because I don't know the names of the songs at all well, and only have the Lateralus CD, don't think I've ever listened to Aenima, so I can't say well they did a real great version of X...
I got there very late - I got stuck in Real Groovy - $360 later I got to the gig to hear the last song from the Melvins - damn! I've been reading a bit about these guys and was interested to see what they'd be doing, since they're pretty influential and not stuck in any genre. I was hugely impressed by the big sound (and hair) they projected, so think I missed out. And I can't buy any CD's for a month, since I told the Reak Groovy guys not to let me back in the shop.
Tool - since I was late, I was nowhere near the front, was in that part of the crwod where people never seem to make up their mind whether they should go further forward or move backwards, so it was hard getting into the groove at parts, but I spent most of the time, eyes closed and blissing out to the quieter parts, doing the mad thing when they turned up the wick. I don't think that I'd say Tool is the best experience I've had even this year in terms of gig going - Hasselhoff Experience and Tomahawk in Auckland are going to take a lot of beating - but it was pretty damn good.
The toking up thing surprised me - don't think I have ever seen so much at that venue, have seen security keep a tight rein on it.
I think the one small point which I thought was a bit naff was his closing philosophical "thought" - take this experience whether good or bad and use it to give perspective on what your next experience is, or something like that. Dunno if he thought he was being profound, or whether the others saw it as profound, but it seemed to me to be a load of tosh, quite frankly.
I had to reserve some energy, since I had two hours of skanking to engage in after the event: yep Royal Rumble and the Offbeats @ Valve - man did they go off!! Perfectly timed to start just as I arrived and got a beer. I need to make/find a way to get these guys to Palmy, or even a bigger venue in Wellington: a packed Valve should be renamed the Sauna!

slim - quite impressed, but didnt go for long
melvins - not impressed....i dunno how they were at chch/welly but when they played last night i just got the idea they hadn't actually been to practice in a while and could really do with one...quite sloppy.
tool - so good. i didnt decide to go until last week and am so glad i did.
yay tool.
i wasn't impressed my melvins ...
i wasn't impressed my melvins either.... i know i've already said that, but they just seemd so pointless.... yes it was loud and metal-y but there was nothing BEHIND that, and i have to refer to a quote from maynard now cos nobody says it better
"Because there is some intensity in some of our songs, I think these bands pick up the surface noise, and that's their influence. It would be a flattering thing if I heard that PJ Harvey was influenced by something we did, or Massive Attack, I would go great, because I feel the deeper movements to this music. When I hear these loud, goofy posturing idiots jumping up and down,
more concerned about their hairdos than their music, it's just we don't do that, what am I missing? There's nothing to the music that moves me, or compels me to want to sit down and
listen to it, which is unfortunate. Maybe I'm just a cynical old bastard."
I thought the Melvins were OK. But ...
I thought the Melvins were OK. But nothing special, but I wasn't really paying attention, I was there to see tool after all. They were a bit too loud tho... As in hurting my ears loud.
only thing i liked was buzz's hair, ...
only thing i liked was buzz's hair, man it was cool, and the very start when no-one knew if he was part of the band or guitar tech, and someone booed and then he played this amazing riff. and he did have an awesome voice, but i felt it was kinda wasted, maybe i just need to hear more....... but nah, i dunno, they just didn't interest me that much, and damn they were loud, i was right up the front at that point, i left in fear of moshers when tool came on
//more concerned about their hairdos ...
//more concerned about their hairdos than their music

Contradiction or what! lol
okay, tool beackoned welli-town april ...
okay, tool beackoned welli-town april 19. my uselessness meant that the interislander i was on arrived in the capital at nine in the evening. i get to the queens wharf at 13 minutes past nine, people are still milling around but the band had just struck the opening chord. (some things you can tell straight away). my flatmate has my ticket but i have no way of contacting him. i had spoken to him earlier in the day and he lets me know a friend who works on these shows was trying to get hold of me. worst of all i have all my tools, possesions, backpacks and sleeping bags with me.
then, as if timing smiled upon me, i spot a neighbour, who sees me, i ask about my flatmate, who is low and behold walking right behind me. telling me my name is on the door, my other flatmate had my ticket, let us hurry the fuck up cos tool is the evening special. 'nuff said bro'.
after apprehensively giving over some worldly possesions to the front door, it's get checked, get upstairs.
it's the fullest sound i've ever heard in that place, not that i've the experience to know. it's a big sound which was designed to travel big for a long way. that's short for phat and loud. the rows of people hoot & howl their condolences every chance they get. creating the warm 'welcome back to the capital tool' atmosphere i'd would have hoped the band would recieve.
songs 'h' and 'lateralus' were standouts, not to mention all undertow tunes and the visuals which spoke tool in volumes.
the multi-media approach to the show was also a nice surprise. though it isn't new, it is something for the home-theatre junkies to digest. the naked lady and man were also great to see tho' i'm not going to try and interpret what they meant. the love is still strong for this band down here and it shows.
it is important to see your most respected bands in the flesh, live as it gets, any chance you have (that's if they're still together, or not dead & gone already). but i don't need to tell anyone of you guys that now do i?
had such a good one, the timing of the night was humbling and i managed to score a t-shirt and the bass players cool black towel... and yes i am going to wash it.
p.s. it's good to be back!!

I was a bit pissed off to miss most of their set actually, as I'd developed an interest in what they'd do - so I'll have to buy a CD and have a listen. Since you seem to know them, can you suggest one CD that best gives an idea of their what they're up to?
