Forums: NZ Music,

Cheers - I had forgotten, but I'll go home and watch it.

This is my first post apart from a Classified and I just wanted to say one thing about Squeeze's punk episode. I watched it last Sunday and I thought it was a good show for people who don't know anything about NZ punk. But I thought that it was too centred on Auckland bands a little bit. No inclusion of Brubeck anywhere! Nor any of the great Palmy/Welly/Nelson/Chch punk bands. At least a mention or a video clip or something would have been cool.

But otherwise... good to see NZ punk on TV!

Can we stop throwing the term PUNK around so loosly. SOMMERSET? Next you'll be telling me Sum 41 is punk. yuk.

can people please stop being so uppity about the term "punk". Obviously it's meaning is very open to interpretation, there is no one be all to end all definition. Which I think fits the general punk ideal of disorganisation/individualism.

can people please stop having differing opinions to mine.
can people please stop refering to me as a collective.
There can be only one.
peace.

// can people please stop refering to me as a collective.

Ahh, but I wasn't just referring to you, I've noticed it quite a bit from other people as well.

// can people please stop having differing opinions to mine.

Heh, punk indeed.

//heh, punk indeed.

ironic isn't it
;-)

I agree with lemonade about the use of the label punk - there needs to be some sort of idea of what punk is if the label is to have any kind of meaning at all, and there seem to be a whole bunch of bands trying to jump on that particular bandwagon because, and I am not quite sure why it has come back with such a vengeance, it is suddently cool to be punk again. Next thing we'll have K'Lee doing a song with a bit of attitude and an edge to the sound and she'll be trying to pass herself off as a punk chick.

While I do agree about punk denoting an attitude of disorganisation/individualism - there is quite an irony in a bunch of people trying to lump themselves in a club named "punk" - hardly the anarchic attitude that came through with the first wave of punk, and a lot of the songs from bands trying to call themselves punk don't have that convention-defying aspect that I would associate with punk - songs about beer and ordinary relationships undermine the whole idea of punk, are more post-punk, as they use things we might associate with a punk sound to celebrate convention.

For every band calling themselves punk there is another person calling another band punk.
This is because no one anymore has a fixed idea of punk, plus punk is like hip hop, more than just a genre it has clothing, attitudes, ideals surrounding it. People I think get the application of punk confused or wrong, most people refer to punk as a style of music and not a way of life and that is how punk is becoming to be known these days, as music.

keep it blurry

ok i dont think anyone is going to agree on their definition of ANY genre of music. i think the whole categorizing bands into a group is a bit stupid, its like stereotyping ppl into geeks, goths, homies etc. i think we can just say its music. but then people might disagree...

oh woops i meant i dont think everyone is going to agree..
