The spice, is it too hot...?

I like to compare scratching with all the other novelty sounds over the years. 70's: guitar voice tube (a la Peter Frampton). Disappeared. 80s: Synth drums and cheesy keyboards:Dead. See the pattern. Maybe it does take some skill to make a sound like when you walk in nylon soccer shorts. BUT, it took skills to do those other novelty sounds over the years, and my prediction is that DJs in rock bands will not last. Hip-hop buyers may like it, but people who wanna hear good honest rock, don't wanna hear scratching ruining the sound the whole way through.

Thats my opinion, I'm interested to see what others have to say about this subject.

Forums: NZ Music,

Yeah I think a typical reaction these days is, hmm how to make it interesting, I know a keyboardist or a turntable!

that isn't to say you shouldn't have either of those, just that only if you think it will add to the sound.

but how can you judge? how can we know whether the band have actually thought about their sound choices before getting one of those in?

the whole 'it will add to the sound' statement could be used as a convenient excuse - or it could be a valid reason.

I know, it wasn't well thought out, I was just trying to get something going.
But sometimes it sounds as if the turntable or whatever has been tacked on, like all it does is a little scratch here or there.

i wasnt attacking what you said - i totally agree that some bands these days are too eager to be in with the crowd.... 'dj's are so cool in rock bands!!!' and the only way to try and ascertain whether they've gone along that road is to listen to the sound. if it seems tacked on, then they probably didnt think it out that much.

then again, the dj just might not be very good?

ahh. Well I guess that is where feedback/criticism comes into play. If people are wrongly complaining that the DJ sounds tacked on then the DJ skills should be questioned, etc.

did you guys ever hear that rumour that betchadupa had gotten a DJ? shit i heard that from heaps of people about 6-12 months, and i laughed.

theres one band that should never EVER try a dj on for size.

what do you think of the new single? only seen it once, but it didn't seem to impress me first off as much as sleepy news, maybe it's just more of a complex song.

yeah I dunno what was up with that rumour.
Yeah "Supa Days" (I think that is the name) didn't strike me like "Sleepy News" did either.
It is less complex.
Jimi have you heard the "Lucid Dreams" track on the "Sleepy News" single? That is very electronic sounding and quite cool.

yeah it's not quite as well produced, sounds kinda like they wanted it really indie but then changed there mind. I reckon it's pretty cool, i definately like parts of it. It sounds a lot less 'neil finn' then "sleepy news", it represents more what betchadupa are like in concert...fun, fast, catchy, energectic etc... but it's one of those songs that goes off live..is a live favourite for a lot of people but just doesn't cut that well on record.

//70's: guitar voice tube (a la Peter Frampton). Disappeared

not entirely. what about generator by foo fighters

love that effect, if i had one, i would use it always, if i had one.

what about an "e-bow", that is still sounding cool, but been around for a while, what about the
"wah" pedal, christ people probably thought hendrix would kill that one, but shitloads of bands still use it.
every fucking effects pedal, delays, chorus's, flangers, etc, etc...
just like fashion, there will always be bands using whatever they like. DJs have been around for a while and be around for a while yet, sure nu-metal will die out in 1-3 years, but i reckon bands will always be tinkering around with DJs

rock as a genre has the most interesting stuff happening for me.

word.

I agree. It just does seem to "fit" better in hiphop doesn't it? I remember the first time I heard 'Nil By Mouth' by Blindspott I thought "Those turntable noises are so unnecessary and irritating, so obviously there just to be like a particular other American band, surely they'll get rid of that DJ." I was wrong, they kept him, but he still adds nothing but lameness to their sound.

grasshopper played half a set with paselode once. we kicked him off half way through. no wonder he won't play us on his station (aswell as us not being rubber dub dub).
