Can anyone out there tell me how they take photos at gigs. I'm particularly interested in knowing:
What type of film you use and what speed?
What type of camera?
What light source you meter off or whether you use a flash or not?
How do you get in the door ie past security?(or do you ring ahead and check with the venue operator first?)
Have you taken any shots at clubs/dance events. If you do both do you change your method ie no flash at a dance gig, longer exposures etc.
Any ideas/tips you can pass on
Cheers

well here it goes:
* if you are a chick wear a boob tube, and hide it it the bra bit if it is a small camera
* use 400 film - kodak or fuji is best, afga is also good
* ringing ahead to venue is also a wicked idea
* shows with flashy and bright lights use no flash
* make sure you do not poin the camera directly into a light
* get as close as you can, try not to take it from low down in the mosh make sure to get as high as you can, taking it from a low point will make it have greyish tones, and it looks real yuk.
* small disposable cameras by kodak take awesome pic's, and you dont have to worry if you lose it if it gets wrecked

Definatly 400 film or higher (gets more expensive the higher you go)
Longer exposure time lets more of the atmosphere into the shot
If flash is too bright it looks stupid, so turn down the flash if you can
Maybe offer to take photos for your local zine and then you can get in with your camera (and for free too sometimes) The package is a great zine in chch, wellington and dunedin which could use more photographers maybe.
Definatley get as close to the band as you can
Wear trousers so its easier to run around jumping on chairs and things to take photos

fucking good advice.
flash is all good, but getting zen for a second, become one with the flash, understand it's power.
flash can be your downfall, use it wisely my son. Try every combination of shit with other shit until you find your niche.

well...since you asked.
// What type of film you use and what speed?
either fuji superia 200 or fuji press 800. only ever those two types all other films suck for live shots, use kodak if desperate never use agfa.
//What type of camera?
whatever you can afford, camera doesn't matter so much as lenses, you can pick up a cheap second hand body, with some fast f1.8 lenses etc. all up for like $100-$400 at cash convertors. Disposable if you desperate
// What light source you meter off or whether you use a flash or not?
don't bother metering, use ETTL with flash, not TTL and when not using flash just shoot if anything is above 1/60 sec, don't bother shooting no flash in red light.
// How do you get in the door ie past security?(or do you ring ahead and check with the venue operator first?)
I don't have to bother anymore with that shit, you should generally be sweet unless it's some pompus overseas act, if it's a signed NZ band send an email to their record label, otherwise shove it inside your big rock flares
// Have you taken any shots at clubs/dance events. If you do both do you change your method ie no flash at a dance gig, longer exposures etc.
mix it up always, flash, no flash, exposures, direction, fuck it up.
// Any ideas/tips you can pass on
just go to your pub and shoot the local bands, a 1000000 times more satisfying then pretentious overseas wankers. Any half decent NZ band would be more then willing to help a newbie photographer. I started by shooting rockquests and shit.

I've found if you want to get that ...
I've found if you want to get that dirty gritty look stay away from colour film and use B&W very high speeds. I've used 1200 speed film and it's insane, huge contrasts and grain the size of golf balls - just the look garage always asked for and the Datsuns never got.
Besides being so light sensitive you can feed off the ambient lighting and create some pretty far out shots. As with all the previous comments, you won't get any good shots being shy and standing out the back, "up close and personal but not in their face" is a good motto.

oooo harsh buddy. check the shot on the inside cover of their album, i shot that methinks on 800 or 1600, its grainy enough for me. The photo on their (Tour 7") taken with a fisheye was also taken with 1600ASA film. It's too easy to use grain as a way of making a photo look good, I only use when the image calls for it.
You must remember that aside from album artwork, the datsuns don't often get to choose what is printed in magazines. I have shot many photos of them..black&White and grainy as fuck...they just don't get printed often, because magazines choose not to use black&white photos because they have paid for colour pages and may as well use them.
Colour is defintaely most commercial magazines photo of choice...and generally grain looks crap in colour. If you want to see grainy black&white NZ images, look no further the A LOW HUM
