The Finalists of the 2002 NZ Music Awards

Forums: NZ Music,

boring, boring, boring.....are there only like a couple of bands in NZ or something Anika Moa, the Feelers, Che Fu and Salmonella Dub. What is with all the feelers nominations. I mean it looks pretty didge with them being in basically all the categories and being the only performers.

only catergories to interest me are
goodshirt vs Pluto in "best new act" i'm guessing goodshirt will easily win it

And Ed nominated for video of the year. Fuck yes, you the man.

what is up with Anika Moa and the internatinal acheivement award...oh woah she got signed, fuck if she beats Nathan haines or Sal Dub i will personally kick someones ass.

I am so anika moa'ed out just looking at that list.

Man that just makes me so depressed about this silly industry...fucking bullshit.

couldn't have said it better. For some reason I was expecting a more respectable list, silly me.

cheers blink...

ZOMBA entered complicated on behalf of gramsci - so i'm glad i didn't have to pay the entry fee - didn't even know about it... but fingers crossed :) is there cash prizes?

there's a few other vids from last year that should be up there as well... jakob's got a cool one (ar ar) and goodshirt, augustino etc...

In full agreement Blink - I think the reason that the same bands are in all the categories is because RIANZ wanted to save money on the amount of guest tickets they had to hand out. They only give 2 free tickets to nominated bands - the rest of the group have to pay $125 odd. What's up with that???
Agree with Ed also - there were other good vids last year (Goodshirt, Augustino etc...) - but the ones nominated do deserve to be. Again though - obviously RIANZ being stingey - most categories there are only 3 nominations (hip hop - only 2 ???????) - what's up with that??? I think there was a lot more going on in the NZ music scene than these lame ass awards are representing!!!

who the fuck votes for these categories?

one word: blaaaaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhh

once ive cleaned up the projectile vomit induced by the ultra sickly sweet taste of cheesy shit that hogs the awards, ill get back to ya.

i was just researching to see why the fuck "love your ways" is up for single of the year, i mean It came out in 2000 and was released before "lydia" last years winner...anyway, i discovered that in this particular week "mama said" had 3 songs in the top 50.

http://www.charthitz.orcon.net.nz/Archives/Charts/04-03-2002.html

good shit, where was there best new act nomination

external link ]

// why the fuck "love your ways"

maybe i'm getting confused with "for the love of it"...geeezz..you can't exactly blame me though.

it's pretty funny though that goodshirt and pluto are only up for best new act, when they put out far better albums and singles then anybody else in that list

yeah that had me thinking I was looking foe a leat a nomination for good on best album, and maybe best band ...what on earth has ZED done this year?

re-released Silencer with new packaging

ta, I didn't think that would have counted

lol, person on m2 just said"what have zed done this year to get tui".....i thought teina knows more than you.....she played a vid then came on and said for full list go to NZmusic.com,.... sorry it's late i thought it was funny but cool

blink: mamasaid have had 3 songs up on that chart now for about a month and a half or something, although to slipped off last week, good to see theyre back on.

respect..

With all due respect, that site's chart is only compiled from "registered members submitting their choices from our voting form each week", which is surely a limited cross-section of New Zealand music fans, no? I for one am not a registered voting member...

wheres wash, i think they actually got radio play in aussie, if my mind serves me right? more of the feelers? what about shihad? all the buzz over their name change, must have done sumthing for NZ music??? wasn't cantabury draughts by dark tower realeased in 2000? what has anika moa done? gotten 1 borderline song into the top 20? the feelers astronuat spent a while in the top 10, same as stellar, what about fur patrol? they've beein doin the motions in aussie
betchadupa got invited along to the aussie band, only them & shihad represented NZ there!!! i don't see anika moa gettin invited to anything like that? please prove me wrong, that way i can see why she's been nominated for so many catorgeries

I'm not entirely familiar with the awards process, but from the little information I've gathered the judging process works like this and may account for why some of the bands people were expecting to see as finalists didn't make the cut.

Bands have to nominate themselves each year, and pay an entry fee of $100 - $250. The cutoff for this entry is around January.
There's 30 annonymous judges - I'm guessing these will be a variety of industry people and musicians.
These judges then rate the nominees on artistic merit and some other criteria but the sales of that band are also taken into account and make up a siginifcant portion of their final rating. So that means that the platinum sellers like Anika Moa are going to rate higher than the smaller selling bands of equal artistic merit.

If anyone has a better understanding on the process, perhaps they'd like to shed a little more light ?

omg... so they"buy" their nomination, is that fee for each nomination or all?

Paying an entry fee for an award is pretty standard. It's a pain in the arse, but a lot of work goes into judging. From the Rianz website it looks as though rianz membrs may not have to pay the entry fee.

http://www.rianz.org.nz ]

yeah, I think Teian's onto it. Full paid up RIANZ members get their roster into the awards for free. Basically, that's all the major labels. Affilliate members probably get a subsidised entry (don't know that for sure) - Wildside, Jayrem etc.

$100 entry for non-RIANZ. This probably stops a lot of the indie types from entering, and the January cut-off would also mean a lot of disorganised or unawares indies (not accusing any of them in particular) just miss the deadline altogether. eg. Two hip-hop nominations? Where's the rest?

sorry, I typo'd your name there Teina.

Labels who aren't RIANZ members have to pay $100 entry fee the awards, which covers as many entries in as many categories as you like. Entries closed on February 1st, and the call for entries was quite widely publicised from memory... (we managed to keep up with the play anyhow).

The judging criteria differs in focus between categories, with some based more on commercial success and/or radio play, others more on artistic merit. There is an "academy" of 32 invited guest judges for most categories (which means you also have to supply 32 copies of each CD enetered), and smaller specialist panels for technical categories and niche ones like country, classical, jazz etc.

Howzat? I've still got the entry pack if anyone wants more info.

LOOP entered a bunch of stuff, with Rhian Sheehan being selected as a finalist for Best Electronica. Right now I'm kinda wishing we'd had a hip-hop act to enter ;) It's kinda ironic that the R&B/Hip-Hop award was added after Kapisi gave RIANZ shit at last year's awards, but then no-one bothered to enter, don't you think? Still, it'll be a hotly contested category next year the way things are shaping up.

What about setting up an official NZM award thingum organised by the NZM crew?
Why?
1) To show the world what the community thinks...
2) Raise the profile of www.nzmusic.com and more importantly New Zealand aritists.
3) It would probalbly be a lot easier than organising a block vote.

good idea.
do it teina... but with heaps of other catergorys. like
"worst band"
"worst album"
"best NZ band to go to Oz"
"fuck off and die"
"Best haircut"
and maybe...."best photographer" :)

http://www.blink.net.nz ]

and dog ate home work award....for albums promised but not released

my question is why isn't Sommersets album 'Fast Cars Slow Guitars' and single 'Streets don't close' in these nominations.... though I don't see them being the type of band to pay to enter into such a competition - if thats the way it actually works. Judging by the airplay that 'Streets don't close' has had on M2 and juice, it seems like they deserve a bit of 'official' recognition, especially having worked so hard for a pretty long while now....

sommerset are on an australian label (I think - Shock, is it?). Which means that

a) they may not be eligible if the record was fully funded by a non-NZ label, and they don't have local label representation (eg. Weta, last year).

b) the label may not have been aware of the awards nominations process.

Wtf?? Why are they all the same bands??? Who's running this thing? I'm not even going to go anymore. Good to see Pluto and Goodshirt up there though. But.. WTF??!!! NZ music is thriving right now and the Tui's th Tui's of all musical events, arnt supporting it. NZ has such good music coming out right now and its coming from a lot more people than just Anika, The Feelers, S.Dub and Che Fu.
I suggest all nzm's in auckland go to the Masonic to see The Smooth Jimmies that night like I'm going to.

did they have a "best live act" last year, did the datsuns win??? are they not having that catergory again cause the datsuns would just win every year??
// entry fee of $100 - $250
yeah i know that this definately put some local bands off entering, that and also knowing that they don't stand a chance not being on a major.
paying to enter is the biggest load off bullshit i have ever knowen.
I don't know if zed can really go up for top group just by re-releasing their album, but they have done quite a bit of playing in OZ, i had a quick chat to Andy at the robbie williams gig and he was telling me had only had 3 days off in 3 months of touring. and straight after the robbie gig they were flying back to oz, going straight to a gig, playing, then jumpiong on a plane, flying back to NZ, going straight to the next robbie gig and playing. Maybe they could be in the "most airpoints gained" categroy"

or there should seriously be a catergory
"best NZ band to go to Oz" with
Pacifier
Fur Patrol
Cassette
Product
Zed
and the rest

Ever since they started, they have pretty much featured boring tripe, which is why the Alternative NZ Music Awards started up in the late 80's - now known as the B-Net awards, which have a little more credibility among those who love music rather than rate pap on how commercial it might be.

myshkin... the B net awards are the only awards anyone should take notice of.

The others are just there to award people who make a lot of money anyway and also to lick ass within the music industry.

And how're you doing this fine sunny Saturday, Martha?

I know what you say about the Tuis - what's interesting this year is that they seem to have caught on - last year's B-Net fave was Che Fu, and he is in three categories of the Tuis this time round. But maybe that happens every year - its only because people are talking about the Tuis here that I'm paying any attention to them.

It was actually King Kapisi who cleaned up at last years b.nets. Che Fu only won best male vocalist (from memory). But yes, it does seem the industry is taking more notice of what were once marginalised genres like hip-hop and electronica.

Funnily enough, one of the criticisms of last years b.nets is that they were becoming too much like the Tuis: predictable, same old names winning the same old awards...

D'oh! Thanks for that. I think that in music generally, there is a greater acceptance of what were marginal bands, what were indies are pretty mainstream - like Radiohead and Tool getting into the top 20's around the place. I think generally it is a good trend, as ideas of what mainstream music is seem to be expanding.

As for the B-Net awards, I agree that there were few outrages there, unlike the early days of the awards when there was a deliberate attempt to put a lot of distance between the NZ music awards and the Alternative NZ ones. Being out of Auckland, I don't get to listen to Bfm often, which has a huge impact on the shape of the B-net awards, but I understand that it now survives as a commercial station serving a niche market - that must have an impact on what might be regarded as alternative. Even my own station has matured considerably over the past few years, with a softening in the general sound.

The Tui's the B-nets, the Smash Hits Teen Choice - they are all the same at the end of the day.
Judgement of artists against a set of guidelines.
The outcome is simply interpretation of the particular body and no more. Its not good or bad - it is what it is.
Poo to all award ceremonys - but yay for the free beer (which ran out at the dinner last year - anyone remember!)

Im always right ;-)

sounds like the new N.C.E.A to put it simply...

they expect too much so that only the top 2% of actually achieve excellence...

*bitter*
