Curious to know the thoughts/opinions of the board members on the thesis that New Zealand, due to geography/culture/population/etc missed out on a lot of the uber-urban/industrial/dystopian/consuhedonistic electronic/dance/hip-hop music, and embraced more organic dub/reggae/etc vibes; giving rise to the earthy/etc feel of a lot of non-rockist NZ music.
Anyone?

. . . that sentence fair groans at the seams, hah. "New Zealand never had the megatropolis sprawl and industrial-steel chic to completely embrace influences like Detroit Techno or Kraftwerk, music from cutlures zooming down the autobahn bathed in neon light reflected from skyscrapers and billboards." Etc.

i agree fully. i dont think theres much more to add, but theres so much less metallic trance (if you get what i mean) here. much more groove-laden, earthy feel to our electronic music. see now im just stealing your phrases.

hmm interesting whee conversation piece. I seem to not dig much NZ electronic music for that reason (prefer kraftwerk / add n to x / BoC / et al over Pitch Black & such) (not looking for an argument btw) .. if you look on the net there is a lot of bedroom NZers making trance / etc / etc / etc (not that I'm a trance fan heh) .. might be a by-product of not-so-numerous amounts of labels with a given style & whatnot leading to a "trend" if you will ?
by the way I just put up a new track ;) check it out if you would be so inclined

i imagined bjork's voice coming in with some little bjork-like rambling melody... but then she said 'ah fekk this - i can't sing to this - it's too whacky" :)

I would say, that NZ drum and bass is on the same scale of filth as foreign drum and bass, except NZers are cooler.
As for electronic music in general, I havent heard much NZ stuff, but Strawpeople is awesome, and all the dub/reggae-influenced stuff is pretty good.
Can't say I'm a fan of all of Salmonella Dub's stuff, but they are a great live band.

I think that trystero is talking from experience of what he likes - I see more people at house music gigs than at dub reggae nights. which would suggest dub/reggae is only generally daytime music. on visits to auckland i see a big following for souless electronica this i think this night following would outweigh the earthy stuff. i guess you would have to consult sales charts. pitch black in my opinion are not earthy dub. i think they are very cold. i think cold electronica didnt catch on here very big in the 70s & eightys because NZ didnt have a big audience open to new types of music - sheep and cowcockys, fishermen and produce growers, they liked phil collins and dire straits.

i would say there are 2 types of electronic music fans,
1. they like what they know/ and they know what they like.
2. they want to fit in with the trends. eg. house music.

horsearmour - I am approaching this from a Dunedin perspective; my musical knowledge of the rest of NZ is mediated through, well, the media. Dunedin's too foggy for electro-stylee, hah. With regards to the rest of your comments . . . non-organic electronica isn't necessarily soulless (Futurism! Machine romanticism!); and I wasn't implying that NZ electronica is purely earthy/etc - the balance seems to be shifted towards that end of the spectrum when compared to, say, US/UK/Aus/etc.
Also, there's some absolutely stunning house/house-flirting music being made, from Herbert's "Bodily Functions" to something more well-known, like, say, Basement Jaxx's "Rooty" or Daft Punk's "Discovery". Etc.
