Is somebody going to review the free Cd on the RIU?
Maybe we could have an open forum so anybody can review the whole CD, track by track. Call it "YOU REVIEW IT!"
Means the one CD gets lots of reviews on the one page from all music lovers, not just from one critic. You could do this for all new Kiwi Albums, singles and Video's.

i'm not much of a punk rock fan but that sommerset song esp. the pitch shifting effect is ace.
lucid 3, dana eclair, staple and the shapeshifer number were the highlights for me.
the panam and p money tracks were both good.
i've heard a lot of good things about fuce - i hope they've got more to offer than what was on that disc.
eight sounded like creed crossed with some other shit that i've never bothered to learn the name of.
everything else didn't leave to much of an impression.
anyone want to guess what bands gonna shoot to stardom over this one. p money excluded of course - he's already famous.

A quick run through:
Panam - Long Grass
a bit too poppy, simplistic and repetitive for me. Catchy.
Lucid 3 - Smooth Machine
ooh, that bass line, those vocals. milk with ice. thick, smooth and chill.
P Money et all - Synchronize Thoughts
nice beat. the violins and MC remind me of a DJ Tomekk track. NZ hip hop is trangressing beyond the gansta wannabes. World class, no crap production here.
Fuce - Restless
catchy. very 80's rock sound to the vocals. I don't mind it at all.
Eight - Moments Gone
eh. not feeling it, something is missing. a bit bland.
Marystaple - New Dog
production sounds a bit washed out. love the opening vocals and the chorus. the bass line. rocking.
the rest soon...
Kitsch - 11/11 vocals remind of ...
Kitsch - 11/11
vocals remind of typical american punk/pop.
Stoods - Portrait
quite like the vocals in the chorus, very radiohead like. otherwise pretty MOR.
Sommerset - Clutter
not bad. like the guitar break, meaty.
Lindon Puffin & the Bleeding Hearts - Rock No More
cute. catchy. a bit of fun.
Dana Eclair - Trouble
laid back. peaceful. nice production touches. I like.
Shapeshifter - Move With Me
spacey. the milky way stirred with a spoon. could do with a bit more texture.
sorry if I'm not supposed to post my take but I couldn't resist.
Lindon Puffin & the Bleeding Hearts - ...
Lindon Puffin & the Bleeding Hearts - Rock No More
>Absolutely hideous. Aural equivalent of Mary Lambie's "style".
Shapeshifter - Move With Me
>Even though I'm not a big D&B fan, I really like this. Subtle, like Carolyn Nightline's plastic surgery.
Not much point in slagging Eight, Nato's description above is so goddam perfect I wish I'd thought of it.

My turn! Here's my initial thoughts:
Panam - Long Grass
An interesting blend of 1960s British pop and 1990s American indie-pop, both sweet and sarcastic. But no, I can never love a song that utilises a kazoo.
Lucid 3 - Smooth Machine
Another one of those wonderful moments where I realise that this is not an overseas group, but it's all home grown. Beautiful guitar.
P Money - Synchronize Thoughts
How does P Money manage to make accordions sound both sexy and menacing? This track is like a monster truck coming to run over your village.
Fuce - Restless
The relatively light and poppy music and the heavier-sounding lyrics and vocals don't really go together. I'd probably really like this if it was instrumental.
Eight - Moments Gone
I'm really bored by this song. It's nothing new, just another boring boganny, guitarry song...
Marystaple - New Dog
...Whereas this song excites me. It's guitarry, but the guitars do something. The vocals are a little over-wrought, but the song's energy makes up for it.
Kitsch - 11/11
I'm glad I heard this, because I was going to dismiss Kitsch as crap based on their previous single which was a silly novelty song. This much better and the singer doesn't sound as whiny as I remembered.
Stoods - Portrait
Hey, this is nice. Big, crunchy guitars carrying the song along and there's actually a bit of meaning to the lyrics.
Sommerset - Clutter
I love Sommerset and this is a great song. Two and a half minutes of punky joy. It's the sort of song that makes me want to jump around while watching them play live.
Lindon Puffin and the Bleeding Hearts - Rock No More
Fuck off. Go back to 1982 and stay there.
Dana Eclair - Trouble
Miserablistic (and I don’t mean that as an insult) and it sounds like the sort of song that’d be part of the soundtrack should my life ever be made into a film.
Shapeshifter - Move With Me
I was really enjoying this song until I was rudely shocked by the shittiness of the lyrics. If I didn’t understand English, this song would be wonderful - but I suspect it's not meant to be making a deep statement.

That's what they are? I should have listened closer.

I must say I enjoyed the whole CD.
Granted a few tracks were pretty mediocre but they weren't awful.
I've listened to this CD a few times straight through without jumping up and wanting to instantly skip to the next track.
My favourites: Sommerset, Pan Am, Kitsch and Marystaple.
i think it's all pretty generic - but ...
i think it's all pretty generic - but i have to say the stand out track is Lindon Puffin . rock no more . he just takes NZ music to another level, a level of intellegence mixed with the eclectic spirit of the land.
I saw this guy perfoming at the local pub in westport - had the croud standing on there bar stools cheering. what a performer. this guy is our biggest unsung hero and he needs a medal. if you can look past the homo style image and really get to the meat and tatties of what he's on about you'll be a better person for it - I definately was.
I'M A BETTER PERSON! keep it up Lindon - love your work. love HorseHair. xx

Saw him live in QT on Friday night and was totally blown away by his performance! My first thought was "why doesn't the whole world know about this guy?" He's got so much energy on stage and his "documentary" on his travels around nz, which was playing in the background, was wicked. And lay off the comments about his style - it's great to see someone who's not scared of having his own identity...instead of just following the mainstream. Rock on Lindon!
