a kiwi chill-out compilation anybody?

Over the last year or so there's been a number of chill-out compilations released in NZ, all of varying degrees of quality and most seeming to feature the song that plays in the telecom ad with the two old people pashing.

It's made me wonder what tracks I'd select if I was put in charge of making a chill-out cd with a strictly NZ flavour.

It turns out to be not as easy as it seems. I've got a few ideas that I'll list below but I suspect that the rest of you guys will have some of your own. So post your playlists and perhaps some kind record company person will let me select the best of the bunch for a real CD...remember it's a compilation so each band get's one song and they can't be too rocky/oonsty because it's about dealing with a hangover not trying to get one...

My picks:

- Gramsci: Complicated
- The Stereobus: Be A Girl
- Jester: Fries With That
- Supergroove: For Whatever Reason
- Split Enz: I hope I never
- Bic Runga: Drive
- Muttonbirds: There's A Limit
- Black Seeds: Little Atoms
- Che Fu: Fade Away
- Crowded House: Weather With You

Forums: NZ Music,

"Chill out" is just another name for "easy listening", innit?

I spose it is, but it's not the classic hits FM kind of easy listening.

I forgot to add "All the Goodness" by Dub Connection and "Not Given Lightly" by Knoxy

id buy that cd ... nice pickings foaf ...

let me thinks

"You're so Pretty" - Cloudboy
"Down in Splendour" - Straitjacket Fits
"Brightest Star" - Fur Patrol

"Evolution" - Dimmer
"Deb's Night Out" - Shihad

"Spill the light' - betchdupa

if I were you
I'd wear a dress and steal ya friends

brilliant SJF

I Don't See Anyone At All - Dead Flowers
(the only 'chillout' kinda song i like... i find lazy sunday cds boring, but i am full of angst...)

sleepless - strawpeople or when felling right goes wrong
another bic runga....sway

Boat Song - Shihad
Four Seasons in One Day - Crowded House
Fall at your Feet - Crowded House

Jeez, how could you guys leave out Neil Finn???
I definitely agree with "For whatever reason" by Supergroove, its awesome.

Lull - HDU
Private Universe - Crowded House
Trashcans - Garageland
Drive - Strawpeople
Deb's Night Out - Shihad (as mentioned by Stefan)
One in a Million - Epsilon Blue
Don't Open Your Eyes - The Stereo Bus

(And most of the songs from the 2001 Radio Active CD)

Little Things - Trinity Roots

good call I had forgotten little things...i had put on my straw people cd then lost the plot....still think bics earliest v of drive bettest.

The Strawpeoples' "Drive" is remake of the Cars' classic. Bic wrote her "Drive". They're differents songs.

true???
fuck i will have to listern more carefully in the future....going to do so now

confusion because of bic doing vocals....very scary that two songs can merge into one, thanks for fix Escy

"Drifting" by Salmonella Dub is a good 'chill out' song

Heavenly Pop Hit - The chills
Beth - Voom

This is hard, we all chill to so many songs, and as I read most of what others have put, I think "oh shit, could've included that", but here's my double CD of kiwi chilldowners, not too sure of the order, I'd need to play them through a few times:

Dimmer - Drop You Off
Relaxomatic Project - At the Onset
LD3 - A Moment
Black Seeds - Little Atoms
Fat Freddy's Drop - Little One
Shapeshifter - Move With Me
SJD - Light Red over Black
Deceptikonz - Fallen Angels
F8/MC Lucia - B-Side of Land of wrong white crowd
Lucid3 - Curious
Phoenix Foundation - Loaf
Straitjacket Fits - Down In Splendour
Headless Chickens - Cruise Control
Brunettes - Talk to Jesus
Epsilon Blue - U R A Star
The Nomad - My Inspiration
King Kapisis - Saboteur

I'm impressed. There's some really good stuff being listed here. Of course, if a chill out CD were to ever come out of this, I doubt it'd be the kind that gets promoted through advertisements using a voice-over done by a New Zealander doing a bad UK accent.

i think a song from the following bands would be good

dimmer
relaxomatic project
sola rosa
hdu
lucid 3

look late entry i know, because I have only just started listening to it but DLT's liquid skies would fit well

More late entries;

Replace "Don't Open Your Eyes" with "Lie In The Arms" - The Stereo Bus
Dragons and Demons - Herbs
Wrapped Up - Breathe
Fries With That - Jester
Supersystem - The Feelers
