// Best rock act to move to Melbourne

I'm looking for a few with her name on it
* Top Female Vocalist

// * Best Album but I am spilt between "the thinking room" and "good"

heart says 'good', but mind says 'thinking room'. this is a commerical awards ceremony, after all.

I don't think thinking room qualifies because it was made overseas

good point. Althought it's not so much where it's made so much as where the artist is signed. Otherwise the last couple of shihad albums wouldn't have shown up. (I think this is te way it works, remembering back to the lack of Weta nominations last year).

As long as the band/artist is distributed by a local label here, I think they're eligible. Anika is on Warners NZ, so should be ok.

You forgot the best video category.

My pick would be Steriogram's White Trash cos its been so popular and the chicks are so lusty apparently - hollis.

Or Augustino's Into The Grain - its pretty styly too.

Oh yeah and Blowing Dirt of course.

Not to mention Tadpole - Better Days.

I vote for golden horses 'babys been bad'
its just so spastic

K'Lee's "1+1+1"!!!!

Mmmph...

Best Band: Shihad...as always
Male Vocalist: Dallas - Fat Freddys Drop
Best Album: Dub Plates - Salmonella Dub
Best Single: Rain - Fat Freddys Drop
Best Video: 'Keep On Pushing' - The Black Seeds

Top Female and Top New Act are exclusive, you can't be both.

Top Female - Anika (too obvious) although, if it was based on album sales, I read somewhere that Hayley Westenra had outsold any other NZ act last year?? She'll probably take out Classical though. Posh spice wanted her to sing at her birthday - thats got to count for something!

Top New Act - K'Lee (love her or hate her, she is our new 'pop' act and should be recognised for it, shes a lovely girl too)

Best Band - Goodshirt (good ol grass roots 'Kings Arms' band, commercially viable and funny videos. Very kiwi, which is a selling point)

Best Video - ElemenoP - Fast Times in Tahoe (dunno if these guys will qualify, not sure of the video was around last year? But they should definitely enter for this years ones, this video is classic!)

Most Annoying Band - Tadpole. Media whores and generally annoying, They've worked hard but it's time they took the next step overseas or off the cliff. They are like a laxative, they irritate the shit out of me.

K'Lee hmmm - pretty face, generic voice and our very own teen-queen, pop-whore and pawn of some dodgy guys dodgy lyrics and production ....matty-J. "Those aren't my panties or my skanky bra"...Does she even know what she's singing??? But HEY...give her an award...sure. Let's give everyone awards because you don't even need to be talented. Let's start a new regime where we reward a lack of talent and originality and call the awards...very generically...The Birds!
Scuse me...passionately hate not K'Lee, but what she represents.

where have you been all my life?
analyse me anytime

you have the same icon as claret
and the face stirs something in my memory
I am starting to freak out

//K'Lee hmmm - pretty face, generic voice...teen-queen, pop-whore and pawn...

It's sooo true. Sorry, but it is!

last year in the filling in bits there was awards for long awaited albums...the dog ate my home work award... it went to bic, well we are still waiting.....
am i right in thinking that there are a whole lot of albums that we are waiting for?

Bic's latest release date is June of this year. Lucid3 put their back a month to end April, Brunettes has been delayed several times, I have no idea when its coming out now, as the last word was "early 2002", Dimmer is in two-three months, Trinity Roots is a bit like the Brunettes. They're the ones I am currently waiting for, off the top of my head.

che has to somewhere in the mix

i'd say the awards ceremony will be bollox - every act will have 5 dancing girls to spice up the stage (just like last year) and all the people that deserve recognition wont get it. really the tuis is an event for the major(?) labels to rub willies at. good luck for all those who werent nominated> love your work.
p.s. and hollis get some taste in music - lindon puffin is a homo.

Dancing girls there was dancing girls and i missed them??????

deceptikonz album was released after the cut-off date for entries (middle of january).

I read in the nz herald that Steriogram's 'White Trash' is supposedly up for the best hip-hop as well, but haven't seen in it any of the other lists. Any one know for sure if it's in or out?

external link ]

steriogram are definitely not in. they were, prior to the offcial confirmation ... but then they weren't.
there were three changes to the nominees between the first embargoed press release and the final confirmations - the other two were changes in producer / engineer ....

thanks caff.
knew this'd be quicker than asking RIANZ direct (still haven't heard back...)
I assume you'll be there? have a wine (or two) for me.

Zed would have got nominated for a number of reasons. They toured all over Australia with The Superjesus, Coldplay and Robbie Williams. Their website is one of the top 10 in NZ (for hits) and they did that All Ages tour just before Xmas so their u18 fans didn't miss out. They have been together for quite a while and often get booked by corporates (Vodafone etc) for gigs and have an American record deal. Zed, they are a Top Group.

Wot......No Blindspott!!!!!! C'mon what's a happening NZ!!!! Sort it out!!!!

what for? the strength of two decent singles?

nil by mouth was in the top 50 for one week @ #38
room to breathe got 3 weeks action and peaked @ #32

compare that to:
che fu, fade away, 22 weeks, #2 peak
salmonella dub, love your ways, 4 weeks, #11
anika moa, good in my head, 13 weeks, #22
anika moa, youthful, 24 weeks, #5
the feelers, astronaut, 16 weeks, #6
the feelers, communicate, 13 weeks, #13
stellar*, all it takes, 19 weeks, #7
stellar*, taken, 14 weeks, #6
goodshirt, sophie, 3 weeks, #10
k'lee, 1+1+1, 10 weeks, #12
k'lee, broken wings, 18 weeks, #2
k'lee, can you feel me?, 5 weeks, #33

(and some of these are still charting: k'lee, goodshirt, stellar*, the feelers)

It's been such a strong year for NZ music that a newcomer like Blindspott would struggle to make an impact on any of the categories, really. Maybe best new artsit, but then they're up against some two classy bands with well-received albums under their belt (and, ugh, k'lee, who has a #2 song and two other succesful singles).

maybe next year, with a good album to help them out.

"Can You Feel Me" actually made it into the charts?! I'll be in Mehico til this thing blows over!

right then. the way it works is:
1. band (or their record company) nominates themselves for the categories THEY think the should be in. gives a bunch of cd's and bios to be distributed to all the judges.
2. judges get the cd's, bios and the list of who has entered into which category
3. judges, obviously, then judge the nominees. (This is the difference between 'nominees', ie. anyone who puts their name forward, and finalists - the ones in the lists above)
depending on the category, there is different judging criteria .... all on points adding up to 100.

for example, almost every category has a sales component, some have a radio play component, some have a live performance component.
all categories have one or some of the above PLUS artistic merit.

this is where it gets screwy. something might have as much artistc merit as a rats arse, but sell like a mutherfuker.
... then, some thing else might have the sales of a rats arse, but be the most goddamn wicked piece of music / record in the world.

bad song - 50 for sales / 0 for artistic merit
good song - 0 for sales / 50 for artistic merit ...

so both the good + the bad will get the same mark out of 100.

that's how it works. not perfect, but it never will be.
i guess the idea behind it is to find some way of showing, if a record sells = people like it. even if it is a pile of poo they are paying money for it.

(deep sigh)

So how does a radio-only single (ie. not actually available to buy in the shops) fit into that scheme? Surely they'd only be shooting for 50% max? Specifically, of course, Anika Moa's 'Youthful'.

but if the judging criteria is:
sales/radio play - marks out of 50
artistic merit - marks out of 50

(that sales 'slash' radio is important y'see)
based on the principle that you can have a no.1 single in nz without it being available for sale.

like i said. it gets screwy.

// sales/radio play

aha. missed that bit. Anika has no worries then -- hi-rotate all over the place...

Sorry Anika, but if this is how it's judged, then Hayley has got this one sewn up. 25/25 sales and airplay? 50 artistic merit? Well Hayley Westenra has outsold EVERY NZ artist this year 4 times over. Admittedly no radio play, but her artistic merit? Performing at sold out concerts across Europe (including a sellout Wembly concert where she was asked to perform at Posh's b'day but turned it down to attend these shitty awards), performances up and down NZ with top top perfromers in her field. 2 albums in one year and a mega deal with Decca Worldwide that no NZ artist will see for a long time. My money is SOOOOO on Hayley Westenra.....IF that is how the awards are judged. However, Anika is part Maori and the race card was pulled at the Oscars and the nominations now include a more 'brown-friendly' category (HipHop) and Hayley is very European Christchurch. I still hope Hayley gets it, she deserves it (and she wouldn't take her poo-tang stinky shoe off on Strassman and make the puppet have a sniff, Anika - get some class girl!).

K'Lee's 'Can You Feel Me?' has maintained #5 for two weeks and is performing at the awards. Soldierboy, you're only jealous cos she doesn't go for pimply faced uber-geeks who consider their cousin a good score.

As for Matty J's 'dodgy' production, it obviously has some cred if all three singles have hit the top 20. I'm not a major fan of hers, just checked out her website, dropped her a note and she replied! Nice girl.

Her album is out next week, I'll buy a copy because I get sick of NZ Music being all Hip Hop or Jangly guitars. Go Pop.

Ah-ha! The classic "you're just jealous..." argument. Well, guess what, I ain't. Why would I be jealous of a Britney Spear/Christina-lite music industry pawn like K'Lee? True, I don't consider her too bad-looking ('cept I just caught a glimpse of her minus the make-up - I think it was in the Listener) but if I were in her shoes I'd feel embarrased for singing such godawful lyrics.

Still, no hard feelings :).
