On the North Shore of Auckland, there are plenty of band practising in their garage every sunday morning. This is great... except they get no where to play unless they pay $2000 to rent out a huge venue which they'll get enough people to make the money back.
So sign this online petition. We will then submitt all the names to the North Shore City Council Annual Plan along with peoples comments and a video.

Or you can make a submission yourself if you feel the North Shore needs something like this.

Um... why don't they just play at the Masonic and the Brownzy like everyone else.
Or are you thinking All Ages gigs?
Cos its not just the Shore that needs an AA venue. Its the whole city.
Absolutely Martha. And why don't ...
Absolutely Martha.
And why don't Shore people start going to gigs as well. I think bands are getting close to not playing the Shore any more because nobody goes to see them. Shore people should start going to gigs before another venue is thought about.
Exactly. I've been to shore gigs ...
Exactly.
I've been to shore gigs and most of them are empty as. Even for major NZ bands numbers don't really break over 70 punters or so.
The only ones that really get the numbers seem to be punk gigs at the Masonic. And thats basically because people who go to these punk gigs go to every punk gig in town anyway, even if they're playing on the other side of the bridge the next night.
Punk is such a religion... why can't there be this devoted following for other genres as well?
Ok maybe I can help you understand ...
Ok maybe I can help you understand where I am coming from.
I have organised quite a few gigs around Auckland, especially on the North Shore. Unforuntatly, half our audience haven't been able to come because there are only really bars to play in.
All ages events I have been involved in organising have had 200+ people.. so really, getting people to turn up at our events aren't a problem.
I was at a Betchadupa gig a couple of years a go when they played 3 gigs 3 nights in a row on the North Shore.. this was when they had just released their first ep. That's the only gig i've been to with poor attendance... can you expect to get a full house every night when you play in the same area three nights in a row?

Yeah that would be cool. The place is called Zeal.. that place sounds awesome. They even have a recording studio!!!!!
Anyway yeah.. I would have loved to go to a place like that if Auckland had one when I was at school. But would it work in Auckland?
I think the best way to start would be to start off small and work up as the venue gains support from both teens and the rest of the community.

At this stage I think it's one of the North Shore City Youth Council's priorities to try and get a youth venue. I'm suggesting rather than having one big venue that everyone comes to from all the suburbs of the North Shore, we have several smaller venues in each of the suburbs.
In Beach haven, you're going to want to have a youth venue that caters to the homies with djs and hip hop groups playing there, pool tables etc.
But then somewhere like Browns Bay you'd want maybe rock bands playing?
