I tuned into Z this morning on the way to uni. I was curious to see how much the station had changed what with the new programme director and all. I couldn’t believe my ears:
Cornershop
Badly Drawn Boy (!)
The Hasselhoff Experiment
The White Stripes
Gomez (wha?)
What are they smoking down there at z? These are the kind of bands that the old Channel Z Wellington (1996 - 1998) used to play! They still got the crap presenters though…

Yeah, maybe so, but the only Gomez song I ever heard on Z was "Rhythm and Blues Alibi" (a friggin awesome song) a year or two back. I'm sure I heard something from their first album, "Bring It On" - I don't think Z ever played anything from that album. Still, Gomez have a new album out, and it's gonna be in my possession shortly.

Anyway, I got myself the new Gomez album, "In Our Gun" yesterday - a fucking amazing record! Best you seek it out soon - it's an experimental blues/rock disc, but without the Kid A/Amnesiac wankery. I'd say it's the best release of 2002..(thus far - just waiting for the new Billy Bragg album to surface, as well as the two Tom Waits albums scheduled for release in May...)

yeah but I'm not a big fan of that song, "Fell in Love With a Girl" is so much better.

whats the deal? has 'Z' got a new programme director? when did this happen and why? or is all the info in another forum......im so un-informed....
Yeah Channel Z has got a new ...
Yeah Channel Z has got a new programmer. He's been there for about 3 weeks I understand. Used to programme ZM a few years back too.
Its great I suppose that Channel Z has adopted this whole White Stripes/Ryan Adams/Hives thing at the moment BUT no one has pointed out how much more ZM like on the other end of the scale ZM has become.
I have noticed a few songs (namely Fronteir Psychiatrist by the Avalanches and My Friend by Groove Armada, to name a few) that were being thrashed on ZM around October/November last year that have suddenly popped up on Channel Z.
Their format is more all over the place than ever before it seems to me. They've kept up the Eminem/Limp Bizkit/Sum 41 kind of stuff, mixed it with this alternative stuff and also mainstream pop.
Channel Z are trying to be underground with this whole White Stripes/Ryan Adams/Hives thing. "TRYING TO" is the operative word. If you want so-called "underground" and "understatedly hip", bFM is the only answer.
Channel Z is always trying to be something its not. ZM is a pop station. The Rock is a rock station. Classic Hits is easy listening. They are what they say they are. They might not be the coolest stations in the world BUT they don't try to pretend they are, such as Channel Z.
Don't get me wrong - some things about Channel Z are okay (James Coleman for one).
I have two questions - why reduce on of the best things Channel Z had going for it (the Ressurection Selection) to one hour on a Sunday? And, doesn't it seem like Channel Z are playing LESS kiwi music than before?
// trying to be underground with this ...
// trying to be underground with this whole White Stripes/Ryan Adams/Hives thing.
Ryan Adams isn't "underground" just annoying.
// If you want so-called "underground" and "understatedly hip", bFM is the only answer.
Is there bfm in Wellington? I dunno, but if there is I don't know of it.
I agree with the Ressurection Selection bit but to be honest I hardly ever listen to Z anymore, only in the car really.
Stefan I know Ryan Adams isn't ...
Stefan I know Ryan Adams isn't underground. But this is what Channel Z is trying to tell you all.
Like "we know these bands that you haven't heard of before and they're doing this whole credible songwriter thing therefore we are cool" thing.
Not saying these bands are great (I LOVE the White Stripes but hey I don't want to hear them on the radio) but Channel Z is TRYING far far too hard once again.
I know bFM isn't in Wellington, but I say if you want to hear so-called "underground alternative" shit listen to student radio, or just buy CDs.
Student radio? Active, hmm, not that ...
Student radio? Active, hmm, not that big a dance/jungle/dnb/trance fan, I like that stuff but not
all the time, plus they only broadcast in actual Wellington not the other regions.
Buying CDs is good but as far as I see the more Z play these "underground" acts the more it is possible their popularity could grow meaning possible tours to NZ, oh how many "underground" bands I'd kill to see live.
This is a good point. But don't you ...
This is a good point.
But don't you think that Stefan, when you drive along in your car and tune to Channel Z, that hearing in the space of half an hour Eminem then Pluto then Blink 182 then The White Stripes then Groove Armada then Andrew WK is like really really WRONG?
I mean hey, variety is the spice of life, but Channel Z is having this identity crisis that just won't end. Its got more split personalities than someone with lots of split personalities!
wrong? well no not really, at least ...
wrong? well no not really, at least for me.
I guess I'm having an identity crisis too if you see my CD collection.
Don't get me wrong, Channel Z is far from perfect but why does a radio station have to fit
a genre hole?
//Ryan Adams isn't "underground" just ...
//Ryan Adams isn't "underground" just annoying.
oh pulease - this is starting to get silly - music is music is music is music ... the clean said it best with their second ep title - 'great sounds great, good sounds good, so-so sounds so-so'.
Now, I happen to like Ryan Adams, he writes a fine, if somewhat derivative song, and there ain't nothing wrong with that, but all this is starting to smell like 'i only like the early stuff - you know, when he was with whiskytown and before he became big, blahblah....'.
Maybe i'm mis-reading you stefan, it just gets me when people start wishing for wilfull obscurity so they can be the only ones on their block to like something cos' the others don't know about it yet. Most musicians want to get their sounds out there to as many people who'll like it - and what's wrong with that. Can we forget about the industry that sits on top of the music, and how they segment, copy, paste and subjugate the art of these people and just enjoy the music ...
come on - fess' up - there are plenty of artists whose new stuff (ie when they were no longer 'underground') is way better than their old stuff .... in my humble opinion - pre-Slanted & Enchanted Pavement were a fall/sonic youth rip-off, Paul Westerberg write beter stuff after he left the replacements, i think you can make a case for a more consistent gorgeousness from Mr Carter as Dimmer rather than as Straitjacket Fits (at least different, and maybe better?) ...
// Now, I happen to like Ryan ...
// Now, I happen to like Ryan Adams
good for you, I don't.
// you know, when he was with whiskytown
I've never heard whiskeytown but people say it is better, I don't know.
// start wishing for wilfull obscurity so they can be the only ones on their block to like something cos' the others don't know about it yet.
Aka music snobbery, trust me I am not a big supporter of such hoopla.

oh...puhlease. that ryan adams song, "new york" is the worst piuece of trite i have heard in my entire life. It has been CD of the week at least 3 times and someone is sucking serious radio cock to get that piece o shit played.
I cannot stand that song, i mean channel z play some crap songs, but what the fuck. He must have some fucking good PR people to give that song an underground rep. Give me bryan adams any day, i'd even rather hear "everything i do..i do for you" then "new york"

I wonder If these so called "programme directors" actually go out and find new music?
Do they actively look or are they passive sponges.
There is sooooooo much good new independant stuff on-line that blows the pants off 90% of what they put on their radio stations.... why don't they grow some freaking balls, take a chance and play some interesting stuff!!!!
Lazy pricks.... radio sucks

Record companies offer them free stuff to play their songs. I heard this from someone I know who works in radio. All the dudes who pick the music for the big networks get this kind of stuff every few months or so.
Overseas trips, stereos, DVD players, Playstation 2s.
Sad but true.
If you were a radio programmer though, you'd be mad not to take the freebies to play a song. If I was a radio programmer, I'd definitely be easily persuaded to play a certain song if I got a trip to Sydders out of it. And I'm sure you would to.
But hey - if the song's not format, why bother playing it? Channel Z doesn't have a format it seems.
