Just a thought, but I know theres probably heaps of people who like a band from NZ primarily because they're a huge NZ music supporter.
I don't - hey I mean I know what I like and what I don't like, international or not - but have you ever been lenient on a band cos they were from our fair shores or never really knew why you like a certain band but cos they're from NZ they're cool.
Weird topic I know - I'm just wondering how many people will admit to it.
I mean to be fair, theres lets of good NZ music (and I'll let your own tastes be the judge of that) but theres lots of crap too. Should we give it a break JUST because its kiwi?

good topic. fair call.
I know I give NZ bands more time, only because I can go and see them live and get a new impression. I'd like to think I'd give a band an open mind enough to see them live - once.
I also think that there are many under-appreciated NZ bands in the past, and now it seems like there are a lot of over-appreciated NZ bands... so it's weird???
yea its true that people will say they ...
yea its true that people will say they like nz music just cause its nz, which really is a big bunch of crap. but it happens all the time in music ie. someone likes a band and then they might release a shit album but fans still go "oh yea this is good" when its complete trash ('kid a' springs to mind).
so really it cant be helped, but yea theres heaps of shit nz music, like rubicon (admit it, its boring shite) and the feelers new album (boring) and all this crap dance dj shite that everyone raves on about everytime theres some new release. "oh my god, this dj is amazing, its soo techno-jungle-house-with-a-slice-of-bacon-in-the-middle."
yea supergroove is damn good tho, just thinking about it. cant really go past 'you freak me,' its animal.

I gotta say that NZ has a fuck load of amazing DJs, if you dont appreciate dance/D&B then thats probably why you dont appreciate them, I think the standard of D&B coming out of NZ is measured of a pretty high standard - even overseas.

Shut up.
And Kid A was a great album.
A pity you don't think so. You can always keep listening to Creep on repeat (OMG SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO ME! I'M ABOUT TO BREAK!)...

woo lighten up i was just stirring some shit. jeez sorry!
and also the 'kid a' call was not out to mock 'kid a,' my point was that die hard radiohead fans from their more classical rock days went out of their way to say how great 'kid a' was, when really they didn't like it and didn't listen to it, just to stay loyal to the band.
(also 'creep' on repeat would be boring).

Well the way i see it.. is why listen to linkin park when we've got Blindspott who sound just like them, if not better..
Why listen to Creed when we've got Savant?
Sure these bands don't sound exactly like the bands i'm comparing them with..
But we have so much good music here in New Zealand. It's a lot more fun to like a New Zealand band than an American band which only comes to New Zealand every 3 years and sing about things that happen in the states.

im definiatly first to admit that i dont like all new zealand music...anyone who read the k'lee or rubicon forum would know this.....but i am loving alot of the talent coming outta new zealand at the moment.....i love the idea of blosoming bands and i love supporting that, and because i live in new zealand, new zealand music is whats most avaiable to me, the music i can go and support in the flesh....i mean why would i support the fresh new coming bands of China?
But im gonna be biased and say the majority of new zealnd rock music does in fact do that....rock!!....im loving it.....
Yeah... I'll give an NZ band a chance, ...
Yeah... I'll give an NZ band a chance, I'll pay to see them live, I'll buy their CD if its worth buying but only if its good and never just because its an NZ Band.
Basically if its good music then its always gonna be good amd I'll be fully be hind it.
If its not up to scratch, then I see no point in praising it. If NZ music is going to succeed and compete with international music then we have to cut the crap put the best stuff forward.
Rasie the bar.

I don't like it when people say that ...
I don't like it when people say that they like New Zealand music. It's not a genre. I'm happy to say that I like some New Zealand music, but other stuff, like those country musicians from Gore, I don't like.
Sure, it's possible to come up with New Zealand-based types of music like "the Dunedin sound" or South Auckland hip-hop, but there's so much diversity and range of quality in music from New Zealand that I think lumping it all together as "New Zealand music" is naive.
But going back to the original question, I like good music. If it comes from New Zealand, that's a bonus.

For a nation that is the size of my state of California, your country is so refreshingly diverse musically. I especially think if more Alternaheads from here were to investigate what NZ has to offer musically, they'd be especially pleased. The state of music here in the States feels kinda stale to me, being a long-time "muso" and all. There are a few exceptions, but so much is garbage: take GODCRAP for example...
Speaking of "garbage". (And I'm ...
Speaking of "garbage".
(And I'm stealing the quote from last week's Fix) Stellar are a fifth rate version of Garbage.
So in anwer to your comment before, Butterfly, why would you listen to a band thats coming out of say, China, when you've got perfectly good NZ acts - why would you listen to NZ's not-up-to-scratch rip-off version.
And I hate most of these international bands but how can you say that:
Savant are as good as Creed?
Stellar are as good as Garbage?
But then again it works in opposite too. I for one hate nu-metal but think Blindspott have something to offer. And Pluto, they're doing it just as good, if not better, as similar international alternative pop/rock bands out there at the moment (I could say the Strokes but thats a fucking bad example. And Pluto have their own sound anyway).
But I think you know what I'm saying.
Just cos its NZ its not ALWAYS better but sometimes it is.

Nice to see some intelligent discussion going on here.
As for Stellar (you forgot the asterisk ******!!!!!), martha hit the spot with the Garbage rip-off thing. Heck, even NZ's top rock critic (IMHO) Nick Bollinger admitted that he found it hard distinguishing between Garbage and Stellar when it came to the strong female-fronted, electro-pop/rock business. Boh's sister Bic, however is a different story altogether - that girl has class!
As for the whole "NZ artists as poor-man's versions of overseas artists", there's a point to be made there too. Blindspot, Stellar, Rubicon, etc, etc.
Take your pick.
How about SJD? Anyone think he may be NZ's contribution to the "New Acoustic Moverment"? He's a bloody ripper though - "Whistle all your tears away...Shopping malls are here to stay...". Sniff.
And Bic has a new album coming out in ...
And Bic has a new album coming out in June - heard a track on John Campbells final show on Saturday - a bit like Drive, so she's working in the same territory - cool. Steller* - they're doing the pop thing, I wouldn't even have put them alongside Garbage until Taken came out, then I thought "wow, that sounds like Tadpole" and Tadpole are the Kiwi Garbage. I enjoy Renee's enthusiasm, so won't be dissing Tadpole but Stellar* are a few candlelight short of a star.
SJD - he hardly ever gets mentioned, but is a fine muso. I'll even play a track tonight, as I've been neglecting him a little - thanks for reminding me.
