Kiwi location songs?

Kiwi music week is coming up for me in while - couple of months still but I want to do something that might take some time. I have a two hour show on radio Control, doing kiwi music anyway, but for the actual kiwi music week, I like to pull the stops out and make a theme show. Last year, since I'm an old bugger, I did old bugger's music, kiwi vinyl only. This year, its either kiwi darkwave music or kiwi music about a particular place in New Zealand. So - the Muttonbirds "Dominion Road", Able Tasmans "Grey Lynn", Mailbox Skipole's "Palmerston North" - a damn fine song, by the way - and so on. I have a few, but nowhere near two hours worth. Can you think of songs which are located firmly in New Zealand, geographically speaking, in the way these two songs are?

Forums: NZ Music,

hhhhmmmmmmmm Neil Finn has been quoted saying "four Seasons In One Day' was written about Melbourne buy is fitting to Auckland City as well (the mention of The domain etc) I dunno.....or Crowded House "mean To Me' mentions TeAwamutu........There you go!
Dunno about 2 hours woth though .....Good Luck!

excuse the typing I've been smoking crack all night hahahaha

"I wish I was in Wellington" by the Muttonbirds is a goodie. The Dance Exponents did a song about Christchurch. If you're really desperate there's the Southern Man song that they play at Carisbrook before rugby games.

"What's wrong with Huntly"

Howie! Of course.

* The Battle of Waikato

If you want to go a bit National Radio-esque and play stuff from days gone by, there's also...

* Invercargill
* Hills of Coromandel
* September in Ohakune
* Hamilton (greatest little town)
* Taumarunui
* Ghost Gulls of Picton
* Okaihau Express

These are all old folkie classics, most of which can be tracked down via the excellent NZ Folk Song website...

From Roy Montgomery's aptly named 'Scenes From the South Island'

* Along the Main Divide
* Clear Night, Port Hills
* Rainshadow Near Christchurch
* Downtown to Vesuvio
(Vesuvio is a bar in chch)
* The Road to Diamond Harbour
* Winding it out in the High Country

And the rest of the songs on the album probably mention NZ place names as well.

"Weather With You" by Crowded House.

"57 Mount Pleasant Street" - surely a reference to Mt Eden's Mt Pleasant Road? Arrgh! So many Mounts!

I noticed a ska band from America (Long Beach Dub Allstars) makes reference to the beach at The Mount. Of course its Mt Maunganui!

Cannot look past Howie Morrison....

Thanks for the ideas people - its a good few songs I can go look for now, although I think that I have to go easy on the Nat Rad playlist type - it is student radio after all! I will do Okaihau Express, since that's where I grew up and maybe one or tow others from that era.

(Having said that - the Nat Rad playlist is getting quite rad itself - they introduced me to Tomahawk after all). When I get something put together - have to look through my own collection - I'll put up a list to show what's available. Of course, more suggestions are welcome - its not till mid May when I do this particular show.

David Pine....Free Man In Dunedin

I'm sure I'll think of more so I'll get back to you...I'll troll the collection later....
