Everybody probably knows all about it by now - a campaign headed my NZ musicians/producers against CD-burning/copying. This is all very reminiscent of the bandwagony "Home taping is killing music" campaigns that were all the rage in the '80s. Tuning into JuiceTV this morning, my eyes were met with an incredibly "holier than thou" Julia Deans sarcastically commenting on how "great modern technology was" and how that fantastic technology (ie. burning CDs) is bad for the NZ music industry. Then along comes Sir Peter Urlich, urging the kids at home to recommend CD's to friends instead of making copies for them. All this with Fur Patrol's annoying "No. 1" hit "Lydia" playing in the background.
I have mixed opinions about the campaign itself, but do we really need this kind of brainwashing?

perhaps the artists could achieve more in ensuring people buy their package
by being more innovative with the packaging
and putting more time into ensuring the package is an indispensable part of the product.
rather than whining
to call the consumers to act morally
is excuse making for artists' inability to master the market.
and i use artist very loosely here manamana
people make beer at home
and people shoplift beer
if you're gonna police this stuff
it's really worth taking into account these artist's gig attendence, popularity etc
because in my opinion
copying cdr's of the james brown and selling them
is a more serious crime, of a more valuable commodity
than say tadpole.
and essentially
it's the major record companies that are ripping everyone off

I think a better choice for their bg music woulve been "My Mind's Sedate" by Shihad.. but seriously - I burn for the car; I've found if I make comp discs with my favorite songs (some albums just arent worth listening to all the way) then my collection statys at home. Losing a $.50 US CDR is better than losing one I've paid upwards of $20 US for! As an artist myself I wholeheartedly agree that burning instaed of buying IS stealing! 'Nuff said!

Burning CDs + selling them = stealing
Burning CDs/mp3s + using them privately = who gives a fuck?
Sure, you could argue that bu doing that, one is "stealing" from the artist - but that's like saying that photocopying exerpts from books is like stealing from the author. Or so I see it anyway. Bandwagon-jumping gets you nowhere in life.
Or maybe it's late and we're both tired.

Hmm, you have a point there. Fair enough. Another reason why I BUY CDs is that I like to have an official copy of that particular release (and give my fave artist a break) - having a burnt copy just doesn't do it.

// Y are CD prices so high?
not this again, use your noggin. There are more costs than just a CD, there are fixed costs to be covered, variable costs and margin (which is the million dollar question, how much is the margin?).
In Canada they are proposing a tax on blank CDs but it kinda hurts those that want to use them to store data.

Cos these bands are signed to the same record companies as NZ artists... if the record company gets burnt, then they sign less bands or have less money to give to local artists, perhaps.

The whole jist of my argument is that the whole "Burn and get burned" thing seems to me like one of those "fashionable causes". What is it with kiwis and "fashionable causes"?
It's not really that 'fashionable', ...
It's not really that 'fashionable', it is actually quite a serious issue for local artists. I play bass in Fur Patrol and my thing about it is this. There is such an incredibly limited income stream for New Zealand musicians, primarily based on lack of population, who are doing music full time and have no time for day jobs or even part time work. Income from sales of records, even though the artist gets the last and smallest cut, is important in more ways than just going a small way towards paying the rent. If record companies don't make money from selling albums (be they local or foreign releases) they reduce funding for recording or promoting local artists. Sounds harsh but record companies are executives solely interested in making money.
You could argue that a band should hold onto their rights and do it independantly because it's all about their art and you'd be totally right. But in this country doing that means keeping your day job (which suits heaps of bands just fine). To make it your life means to get record company support or leave the country to more populated areas.
There appears to be an unusual perception that 'big shots' (as you put it) like Julia are loaded which is not the case at all. Every cent lost due to pirating is a kick in teeth for the local stuggling industry.

The campaign is one of education. Its a major worldwide problem that could have some far reaching effects on the industry as a whole. The industry is contracting as it is without the problem of lower sales from people burning CDs.It does feel a bit weird though being fronted by these local groups where its really the record companies and publishers that have the most to lose on overseas acts.I would really love to know many Cds are being burnt of local artists.

I didn't think that. Granted, Deans does appear to be quite a talented singer/writer, and I understand what it must feel like for her - I just didn't care much for her sarcasm on the campaign commercial they're airing on Juice. It came across as insulting.

The thing is, hollis, that wether or not it's local artists having their albums burnt isn't the point, local artists still lose out and thats why they got Julia to be on the ad, to get that side of it across. It could have been Che Fu with 'Fade Away' playing in the background (would that have been less of a 'brainwashing' experience for you SoldierBoy?) as he is another supporter of the campaign.

Apart from the fact that I think you are coining a phrase that doesn't quite apply in this case (insulting to your intelligence? Maybe insulting to the designers of the CD burning technology but truth is - Julia has a CD burner, to burn CD's of her own recorded material. She was being sarcastic, something your intelligence shouldn't take personally) I think your concerns are answered in your previous post. The problem is that people view someone who has a public image as either a 'better' or someone others view as a better (your 'supposed better') and not as the completely normal person they are. If it was one of your friends fronting the campaign your opinion would be different because you wouldn't have any incorrectly perceived notions of the attitude behind their tone.

Uh, I dunno. I don't neccessarily agree with a lot of my friends' views or opinions. If they got up there with all sorts of wisecracks aimed at people who burn CDs, I won't necessarily agree with them. Same, I've got some friends who are very vocal members of Amnesty International and World Vision - two organisations that I wouldn't think of joining. Or maybe you're sticking up for Julia 'cause she's your "friend"?
Still no hard feelings, and if the campaign goes along, then good work.

Na man, no hard feelings at all. I've enjoyed the debate
You're right, I am here because I'm sticking up for my friend. I just don't think it's a good idea to accuse someone you don't know of being selfrightous (//incredibly "holier than thou" Julia Deans) when it's the presentation of the cause you have taken issue with. I don't think your argument should become a personal attack. She wasn't coming out with any 'wisecracks', just pleading for people to be honest when it comes to support for local acts. It wasn't even aimed at people like you so sweet as.
And I knew I'd get you with the drink driving thing.... it was kind of meant to be a joke - sorry dude
Burning CDs is great. I get to listen ...
Burning CDs is great. I get to listen to all my favourite smaller bands on my discman. These artists really need this kind of thing so that when they finally release something, enough people will have heard their music. And the first thing I'm going to do when my favourite band release their album, is BUY it..
Before Tadpole had released their first album, I talked to the guitarist and the bassist on the net. At the time I hadn't heard their second single "For Me"... I asked them to send an mp3 and they did! Back then, it seemed they just wanted to have their music heard.. now there's money involved, they want all they can get. Personally, I wouldn't want to burn many bands like Tadpole, Fur Patrol, Dave Dobyn etc because you hear it to death on the radio. I would much rather see these bands live.. these bands should play more all ages shows... or is there not enough money in all ages shows? Fuck that.
I'd have to admit that if I spent millions of dollars recording an album, like Korn have recently, I would be pretty pissed off if I lost all that money because everyone only downloaded the mp3s. Lets see what happens...

lemonade - i think what angsty was getting at is that - burning cd's is good when you first start out as a 'musician'....many of my own friends have borrowed cd's and burned them simply to see what the band 'sounds' like - specially if its a 'newish' band...and it has only ever been EP's they have burned, NEVER full LP's.
i have to agree with you on this one angsty - that 'tadpole example' is perfect - in a way lol.

I thought when I read angsty comments he was talking about Burning cd's of mp3's from bands who are not in production yet and need a hand to spread the sound... a rally in sydney sent me a cd of his bands first effort with a big please copy and give away as many as you can
