Pop music has been largely unexplored in New Zealand...until now that is! This week on Squeeze we're looking at the local pop scene - we find out why our pop track-record ain't so great, and how some of our new artists intend to change that (which new artists? K'lee, Aaria and En Masse). Plus we have a wee chat with Joe Cotton about what went wrong for True Bliss, bless 'em.
Squeeze - 3pm Sunday and again the following Thursday at 11.30 (a nice precursor to M2!)
ps: if you wanna email us about anything, the address is squeezetv@hotmail.com
Why do you think pop's never really worked out here before?

That's easy. New Zealand's always been about rock. Good' ol we're-new-zealanders-and-we-dont-give-a-fuck-about-you-aussies rock. New Zealanders arnt going to try and sell themselves with pretty smiles and sparkly hair clips. We're more than that. We're not fake and other people *have* to except that, hence rock music, the ultimate rebellion and expression of self :)
lol, did all that even make sense????

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! pop music is a tool of the devil! argh...:P
maybe the reason why its never worked ...
maybe the reason why its never worked before is because every 'pop' artist from nz SUCKS!! sorry to be so blunt...but its so very true. I'm not just getting down on it because its 'pop' music in general, I have a wide taste in music, but seriously all nzers that try to attempt a britney spears or n*sync just can't pull it off...they all fail miserably while looking and sounding like a bunch of try-hards.....*sigh*, we should just stick to rock....its the only way to go....

Kind of agree with u there a tad Butterfly,I always get that horrible "I,m gettin embarrassed for you "feeling like its kinda there but not quite reachin the ole lolly jar,if you catch my drift.I guess soooooooooo often with pop it comes down to prodution and big name producers, something that we must be short on in the pop field of things.

Money is whats wrong here. There is so ...
Money is whats wrong here. There is so much money and hundred of peoples time invested into making the Backstreet Boys, NSync, Britney, Christina etc successful that as a small country, NZ cannot compete. There are fantastic musicians in this country, mainly rock songwriters, but we don't have a songwriting factory here such as the ones in Sweden etc catering for an artist targetted to "feed the masses" as it were. Well thats what I say anyway.
And the few examples we do have ie: Klee, Aaria, En Masse, and in the past, True Bliss, absolutely SUCK. Aaria's first single, though, the one they did in Maori, was pretty good I must admit, but when it translated to English it was shit and their next song was just an embarrassment.
In short, I think if like there was decent pop songwriters in this country, it would make a whole lot of difference. Has anyone heard the lyrics to that stupid Klee song about 1+1???
In short, if people really want to make it successfully as a pop act in NZ, they should like, move overseas, like that guy from NZ who got a pop hit over Xmas on Top of the Pops. Forget his name?!
But really, New Zealand is bursting with a whole heap of other, more credible artists/songwriters, whether it be rock/dub/hip hop/dance, why do we really need a local pop scene? Leave it to the Americans/Swedes to get your fix and go see the D4 instead.
//rock/dub/hip hop/dance... now that ...
//rock/dub/hip hop/dance... now that sounds incredibly better in new zealand music than 'pop'.
throw in electronic/indie/instrumental/indigenous/lounge etc etc for good measure...
yeah money but more importantly top ...
yeah money but more importantly top notch producers which we lack in terms of pop, the beats on those kiwi pop songs are so old skool, not good old skool but cheesy crap old skool, yeah that's s-kool. Klee's new song has a terrible hi-hat in it, so god damn cheap sounding. Pop is about "packaging", you have to have a slick sound which just isn't happening here.
There have been sucessful pop act from ...
There have been sucessful pop act from New Zealand; O.M.C. (Christmas, Top of the Pops), Crowded House, but currently if a strong well managed pop group were to appear it would require our best talent. Perhaps we could use our techno guys as producers (Paddy from Pitch Black (I've forgotten his last name)?)? And we'd need our best songwriters (Greg Johnson?). Then there'd have to be massive support from within the industry...

Her latest song is such a rip off from some other (famous) pop princess but I can't for the life of me place which song ( in particular the chorus(y) bit where they're going 'can you feel K-lee' (gag!) It's been bugging me ever since I first heard it. Any ideas?

For fucks sake, why on gods green earth ...
For fucks sake, why on gods green earth are we bothering to discuss the topic of 'pop' lyrics. If pop was sold on the basis of lyrical content then possibly only 6 or maybe 7 records would have been sold surely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its meant to be dribble,it has to ooze dribble,it really has to have dribble dribbling from its dribbly bits.Pop is all about the "hook" no more no less.It has its place and will always sell big because obviously we are generally a lazy and unintelligent race of creatures I guess?Yeah its lazy music!!!!!!It does all the work.Tell me you havent occassionally had to slap yourself because you caught yourself humming or whistling a Vengaboys or Britney Spears hit.OOOCCHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
