Has Modern Music Killed the Axemen

do great guitar players exist in New Zealand ?

Forums: NZ Music,

I have an absolute passion for music made by good old fashioned grunty gutsy guitar players
people like Steve ray Vaughan, bb king, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.
I have posted before how for me, to call music good, it must cause a strong emotional reaction within me.
I have described in earlier posts how the effect of a good guitar player is similar to having them using your spinal cords as their guitar strings.
where I am going with this rather creepy confession is ....

Has the current music styles removed the need for the great guitar players, and if not who in the New Zealand music scene doing it for you?

Chris Humphries (ex Sommerset, now with Day One) is brilliant.

Yeah I reckon there is so much potetial within NZ but it doesnt/can't exactly come out I mean "Oh its got MUSIC in it only old boring people listen to MUSIC music" do you see what I'm getting at, its hard to explain. Plus So many people have this thing for singing, singing is great but it's not everything also, major gitaur parts/solos can be quite time consuming so some/most people get bored and radios may not play it beacause it takes up time and most songs today are around 3.30min. So writers might not be brave enough to write them. But yeah there are some amazing guitarists aroun but not many of them get to shine.

Umm, yes, I think Andy from Zed is a wicked guitarist. Not keen on their music, but he has some tasty sounding lines. And of course Shihad are no slouches when it comes to solid and chunky. I think Chris from Tadpole is pretty good too. Did I miss anyone?

Thats just weird, I was lying on the grass in the warm Blenhim evening sunlight waiting for Che Fu to start, not really paying that much attention (4th time hearing Zed live with in the year)
when I found myself sitting up and listening.
Andy lynch was doing a solo.... "in my mind" .... I think like I said up till that point I wasn't paying attention..... any way I got the mearest glimps of a maybe one day soon impression, that this young man may in fact know how to play that pretty gold thing he hangs round his neck.
Andy Lynch's potental has me keeping an ear out for Zed, hence alot of my posts about them are based up waiting for them to grow older.

Yes great guitarists do exist in New Zealand, just because we don't see them on Tv, doesn't mean that they're not out there. There are heaps of independent bands in New Zealand, and a bloody great deal of them have very talented guitarists eager to wail for an audience!

The Zed dude won the NZ guitarist of the year award a couple of years ago. Apparently he's amazing. Its just that being in Zed doesn't really give him much of a chance to show off his skills. Hes in that old Just Juice ad too

I always wanted to know if that award was part of the hype / bullshit machine that was / is built around Zed???
