shellac + hdu concert

from the info on hdu

"All the while... Steve Albini - a fan of HDU since the very first EP, had been listening and a NZ tour with his band Shellac was arranged. The subsequent Real Groove photo spread of the successful tour, shows the two bands enjoying the delights of the scenic West Coast along with the surf in Raglan, while building a strong bond together. They parted ways with the promise of meeting up for more real rock shows together in the USA."

did anyone go see this concert, or have the real groove magazine with this article in it?

Hey mate,
It wasn't just one show in NZ it was playing all the main centres along with the little ones and very small ones like barrytown.

While the kidults were across the way at the bfm Private Function and NZ Music Awards run by fat controllers, starring Shihad and Fur Patrol and Zed probably, these two bands were setting up in a small club called 'Factory' in the middle of auckland.
There weren't many people watching as Tristan from HDU approached the stage from the floor and began to play his guitar all alone. The rest of the band lounged around the bar, talking to friends and drinking beer. After 20 minutes of solo fretboard work, the full band started in on their industro-strength muscle workouts and steriod laced rock tunes, stretched over rocks of feedback.
Then Shellac tried their brand of the same stuff, an elixer that empowers the listener to exclaim 'blimey!' and order another round from the bar. Shellac actually stopped and asked the audience if there were any questions we had about their band, Steve A, life in Chicago, the weight of an unladen sparrow, etc. Seemed a bit like a classroom. Still, they served beer and waved arms around and everybody left very happy, except for this one crying thirteen year old who wasn't allowed to buy a Shellac t-shirt.
They are some very nice photos in that Real Groove, kind of like the ones your granny would take on holiday in Punakiki, except the band people in the pictures are all wearing grey coveralls and not smiling.

ay yes, went to see those two in ol napier.... very very cool... loudest concert ive been to me thinks.... i want steve's overalls

got introduced to the albini sound back in rapeman days
i somehow sideswiped big black...
i'd say steve's approach and his delivery and his engineering of their recordings has been my single biggest influence... I was so glad to hear someone doing it like they do... god the eighties were a wasteland
then i saw them 2 feet in front of me at o'flaherties and they were uncompromisingly excellent...
the q & a was cool... someone asked "what makes you guys so fucking good" - and the bassist said "that'd have to be todd trainer" (the drummer)

dog and pony show in wellington was great too - all these wicked musos doing fanatical shellac covers - mesmerising

oh yeah... hdu played b4 them - took me a while to warm to it - I wish tristan had done that 20 minute warm-up riffin trick - cos they just went straight to the ear-bleeding trebly ouch music right off the bat and then his amp crapped out... not their best night

and i think steve got in a fight at the door b4 the gig.. with some thug trying to get in for free... come on! $5 to see shellac and hdu and this dickhead was trying it on... "i wanna have a FIGHT with you"... go steve - he means what he sings - no?

Fuck steve is a fucking legend!!!!!

Two sound bands....
HDU kicking it in the UK in a couple of months will be brilliant, looking forward to the Glasgow gig with The Blimp.....

Hey gluepot RIP it is awesome you have to post about HDU when ever you can. But can stop shamelessly posting about your own band the blimp. It is lame posting about your own band.
