probably true. theyre not as sexy either. queens of leon, anyone? nah-uh.
it would be interesting to dig up that old topic about the rockshop and how badly they treat their female customers.
in a nutshell, i would say that the success of a guy band hinges on whether they are good or not, and the success of a girl band probably has more to do with whether they are hot or not.
List all the up and coming female artists,
And then we'll take it from there.
I'll start:
Bachelorette - Fantastic, as good as any male band/act, and serious about her music
Charlie Ash - Crap fashionable music which will fall away, Embarassingly embracing their womanhood.
IMO - If you're serious about music it shouldn't matter your gender, but I'm not a record exec.
HARM TIMARU hmmm interesting I havnt given it much thought,we played with foamy ed once, and although there style was not my cup of tea, they did totally kick ass which they earnt my respect as great performing musicians regardless of weather they are females or not,its all about perception,Us kiwis either choose to take people seriously or we dont and we have such high expectations of our performing artists (and our sporting personalities) but opinions are like bung holes and I just expressed mine I take any person regardless of gender seriously who performs music or art live in front of people ,as being a musician myself I know how daunting that shit is respect to all artists Yeah!!!! peace rock on!!! :-)
come on! Sexism is a good excuse if you are female and are looking for a reason to justify why you cant make it.
I hate questions like this: not taken seriously by who? the record companies? the studio engineers? the record buying public? the radio stations? Nz music commission?
this question looks like an invite to a 'lets moan about the sexist music industry' workshop.
alternately it is Sexist institutions that allow Woman to "make it".
Being taken seriously and "making it" may be exclusive concepts too.
I was listening to a conversation involving 3 Musicians (all male) of high caliber, major ears, chops and histories and they seemed to concur that it is the actual nature of the Industry that "Sexy" Woman acts succeed the same as Male, the promotion is an image/lifestyle/indoctrination...the music is secondary if deemed or considered at all, it's just what you are selling.
I tend to use Wendy Melvion and Lisa Coleman as the measuring stick. They got to play and write with Prince which means Musically, they operate on an extremely high plane but would they have go the job without the physical attributes Prince needed to market his POP music.
the sexualized and fashion content of Prince's music then is the next step... lets run Kiss but our picture is of say Rory Buchanan or Shane McGowan doing the falsetto.
I hate being the bad guy, but lets use this as a measurement...
Out of this band who is sitting on the beach in a suit or tucked away at the back.
Of course it doesn't help that her name is Carnie...
I wonder if she smells like cabbage?
ok: whats making it? - chart regonition, a record deal, peer reconition, being on the cover of NME?
And whats being taken seriously? chart reconition , a record deal , peer reconition , being on the cover of NME?
The music industry is a business entity here to make money. The business entity 'music industry' doesnt exist as a social service so miserable folks can write albums about their fucked up relationships, or 'push musical boundaries' or make heartfelt political comment and have their bills paid. The fact is that good looks help sell records (for male and female) and its a reality of the business.
An artist (or their managment) makes the image decision the same way a salesman decides to change the colour of his suit: research shows if you wear a navy blue suit you sell more insurance: research shows if you shake your tightly clad and toned ass you sell more records.
tis how it is.
And I think I read some were that to play in Prince's band you have to be shorter than him: thats less than 5 foot 2 and 1/2 inches . Damn! I'm an inch too tall!
So if we go by the above logic then if we put Pamela anderson up against say Alison moyet and they had a sing off then pamela would win hands down wouldn't she .. logical really.

that shorter than Prince
that shorter than Prince stuff is BS
both those two are taller than him for starters.
I think I agree with your take on the Music Industry.
this do not say however, if Woman cop a worse deal.
I remain skeptical, I consider many strata's of society "sexist" and the marketing of may musical commodities perpetuates and continues this badness.
