Forums: Bands,

Try Shihad, they love Jaz by all account.

Ah, Mahinarangi Tocker, Rick Bryant, Dave Anderson Band, Windy City Strugglers, Flip Grater may (or may not) classify as NZ Folk. cop Paul McLaney's latest too.

I like Mustard, Odessa, Ishtar for rock.

I don't now if we still have any Punk bands. We do have guys who dress the part.
Metal...Tainted give them a go.

hi-
Jaz Coleman lived here for a while, but hasn't for a few years now.
I'm not sure if Shihad DO love Jaz- they had a huge falling out when he was acting as their producer...
try Die Die Die.

I'm endorsing Flatwounds

yes I was being cheeky about Shihad
I wonder if Karl has tried flatwounds

try Oceania(?) wasn't Jaz in on that?

yeah, Jaz was the producer of Oceania. With Hinewehi Mohi. He also wrote string quartets, symphonies, and arranged symphonic Pink Floyd. cringe. the String Quartets are pretty though.

He was also tied up with some symphonic renditions of Led Zepp, along with Youth.

He did those here ( and the Doors to ) at work, that was what, must be 10 - 11 years ago, him and Youth came in, think one of them had a mini. They recorded most of it in the Hall with Roop one of our engineers, think they did some recording in a pyramid at some point too, not sure it was for the Led Zep or not. There was a derelict church across the road from our studio ( which is also in a church ) it was full of rubbish and had a squatter living there with his dogs, he'd been there for years, he was known as spiderman .. or Dave to me :-) ... because he had spiderweb tats all over him with one big one covering his face, now somewhere along the lines someone thought dave was a wizard, he was a nice bloke, but didn't strike me as a Gandof type of a guy, next thing I know they have candles and lights strung around the control room, and I;m sure the air smelt odd, even the aircon had problems :-) ! They seemed to enjoy the sessions, think they were in for a couple of weeks, then over the next few years popped back every now and then, haven't seen them for years now, not sure if Roop's still in contact, think he did some work with them with killing joke. It was also the first time I'd heard of York street studios, one of the guys gave me a brochure.

wow. cool as story. I missed that reply at the time...

same
and it was the day before my birthday too

dusted off my 12" "Love Like Blood"
magic moment that.
took me right back
16s on HH
would of had a spliff too.

Thanks everybody for the positve response to my post, I am going to check out the NZ bands that are named, I knew of Shihad and their collobortion with Jaz, but have never heard the music.

wainuiomata, thanks for the story. The pyramide recordings were for the Killing Joke album Pandemonium from 1995.
I am waiting for The Doors conserto in the post and the Oceania cd...cant wait for them to arrive.

has anybody here been listening to the new Killing Joke album, Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell...the best album of 2006 IMHO.

Hosannas has nothing on the album before it.
anyway best album of last year was:
Om - Conference Of The Birds

I have to dissagree, I found that the 2003 album to be brilliant, but Hosannas is heavier, darker, rawer and more personal and I absolutely love the muffled and claustrophopic sound on it, it was recoreded in a vine cellar in Prague wich the band called basements of hell, and it sounds it.

Was reading a interwiew with Toogood of Sihad and he is not too happy with Mr.Coleman not to say moore :) looks like they had a big fall out...shame realy.

I spoke to Roop and he said the Doors one wasn't done here, think it was recorded in europe somewhere, he did say but can't remember, maybe Bulgaria ?? guess the liner notes will tell you.

The Doors concerto was done in Prague with the Prague Simphony Orcestra.
Been listening to the Oceana cd and it is great album, some of the most beautyful music I have heard and Hinewehi Mohi´s voce is amazing.

"Crawling for oil, they were bleeding for gold"
