So Garth George wrote an article in today's Herald saying that global warming is "rubbish".
Firstly, can someone tell me who, in fact, Garth George is? A climate scientist? Another grumpy old white middle-class male journalist? I honestly have no idea what this guy does to give him the power to be featured on the main Herald site spewing forth such smokin' nuggets of knowledge as: "If you believe all the garbage you've been reading, seeing and hearing lately about global warming, then you probably still believe the Earth is flat."
Um, yeah. Ok, global warming isn't proven, so slowly the emphasis is moving toward the less unequivocal 'climate change'. However, according to George and his minions (sorry, he would be the minion and Augie Auer the master) that phrase is just 'PC gone mad'. Um, yeah.
Regardless of whether it has been proven beyond 100% that humans are causing a potentially catastrophic change in our atmosphere, we should still be sensible enough to be wary. To accept some short term cost which by all accounts will go a long way towards reducing exponential long term costs. In other words, to consider the wellbeing of future generations. Right? ........ Right....?
Apparently not. Here's the conclusion to the rant:
"As for me, I'll keep on driving my 4-litre Falcon, use as much water and electricity as I want, take as many airline flights as I please, and keep the woodburner well stoked throughout the winter.
And if there's a youngster out there who can be bothered, I'd be obliged if you would cut this column out and put it away somewhere to be brought out and reread in 2040.
I doubt very much that I'll still be here, so please say on my behalf: "I told you so.""
Oh, god.

but until 2050 we are meant
but until 2050 we are meant to get better weather, so cheer up.
Now is probably a good time
Now is probably a good time to buy a house in Dunedin. It'll be fantastic coastal real estate in a few more years...
Well I think he is kinda
Well I think he is kinda right in a way.
Scientists and media do fear-monger this topic A LOT.
and a lot of it turns out to be milarky, But that is absolutely no reason to stop trying to improve our environment. It's going to take centuries to clean up what started in the industrial age and then America took to extravagant levels with the delightful atomic age in the 50's. I'm pretty sure everything that is wrong with America is blamable on the 50's
Well, he's kinda right,
Well, he's kinda right, yeah.
But it's not much of an achievement to write an article saying the media exaggerates issues. Add to that the other 99% of his article (basically a big fuck you to the future) and I conclude he is a dick. Yes that's how low I'm going. This is the guy who wrote last year that he knows sea levels won't rise because every time he sees a rainbow it reminds him of God's promise to Noah.
Frank Haden recently died
Frank Haden recently died Jimi, I forgot to post it up here.
It is difficult to argue with people who present such column's ,yes.
The main problem appears to be that to actually make sustainable changes that will have long term and multi-level results the entire Capitalist System needs a sizable overhaul.
This is what induces the panic from the privileged writers in our Media.
If this is too raving coomo, just play follow the money.
all roads lead to Exxon comrade.
Garth George is... jimi
Garth George is...
jimi asks: Firstly, can someone tell me who, in fact, Garth George is?
AFAIK, Garth George is a career journalist, now retired. Another hack from way back when told me that he (George) was a veteran of the Auckland Star; he has had a weekly column at the Herald for years now.
AFAICT, the Herald tries to have columnists that are broadly representative of society. George is retired, white, male, Christian and conservative, so I'd say that, as far as NZ Herald columnists go, he sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from someone like Tapu Misa (30s-40s, Pacific-heritage, female and somewhat liberal).
I guess that puts George closer to "grumpy old white middle-class male journalist" than "climate scientist".
FWIW...
It certainly puts George
It certainly puts George under the stewardship of Mr Haden.
OOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!
Garth George has spouted
Garth George has spouted religious crap for years which has completely managed to negate any useful or sensible contributions he's made (not that I can remember many).
As far as the global warming goes, I completely agree with Jimi's first post - at least if we're wrong we won't have fucked up the planet as much - in fact I'd quite happily like to be proven wrong in said 2040

no I didn't.
Maybe he is coming to Chch... they could sack Basset and replace him with George in an attempt for "fair and balanced coverage".
