MP3's, Ipod's, boring stuff

Ok I just bought a 4GB nano, and just realised I could have spent $100 more and got a 5G 30GB model Ipod. Wth the apple 'lossless' format the nano can only hold about 150 songs ( I was told 330), which just isn't enough. I took it back the next day and they wouldn't swap it, because apparently once the packet is opened it can't be sold as new again, which sounds like crap but what can I do. Question is is it possible to really tell the difference between lossless and the standard compressed files, sound wise? Does anyone want to buy a green 4G nano for around $250?

Forums: The Bar,

kleanie here - there are a few options with encoding, quite apart from lossless, but they would only earn you a token few more megs, maybe enough to get 20 - 50 more songs on. some internet auction site is probably your answer. but mind you, that's what the nanos are designed to do, carry a snippet, you update the tunes on them every few days, rather than storing all your music collection.

This is a much debated topic in the past.
A 1:10min song Compressed using lossless is 11.5Mb and the same song at 320kbps the highest resolution Mp3 is 3.6Mb.
If you can tell the difference walking around listening through those awful ipod buds I will take you dolby labs and force them to give you a job. I doubt you can tell the difference even at 192kbps, but don't go any lower than that, and make sure you use Vbr, because on a nano every bit counts

actually It worked out to be around 25 MB pers song using lossless, and it' easy to tell the difference (between that and AAA).

Was that for a 1:10min song? I got that figure by converting a 1:10min song from CD. So I don't think I'm wrong.
What resolution AAC are you using? you can hear the difference at low bit rates. If you haven't changed the settings on Itunes it is set to 128 by default I think, which is really low and pointless.

Explain what AAC means

I went Edit>>Preferences and then you change the upload setting - uploading from CD to Itunes - from AAA to Apple lossless (which is exactly what I want it) 58 songs have taken up approx 1.6 GB

//Was that for a 1:10min song?//

no the average song length would be around 3 minutes.

The file size I referenced in my first post was for a 1:10min song I was using it as a reference.
which is why I asked.
What's AAA

AAC - Advanced Audio Coding
A type of compressed Audio Codec used (Not exclusively) in Itunes.
If you want to use Apple loseless Go ahead, the file size is around 3 times that of a high resolution compressed format.
Honestly, give a high resolution AAC or MP3 a go.
320kbps - Highest

ir reduces the sound quality noticeably, I compared it with lossless on a couple of albums. The sound has less air and less of a background. This is especially true for badly recorded stuff that already sounds thin.

but thanks for your help, I appreciate you putting in the time.

...yes, thank you, I am now better informed.

hmmm, praps you should check with the consumers institute about your right to return/swap. thats very uncool of the retailer regardless...whats happened to customer service? did the retailer tell you it could hold 330 songs? if so they have mislead you, and should make right of the situation.

bebub

I asked how many songs it could hold uncompressed and the sales assistant said that. I went back the next day and the owner told me he couldn't swap it cause I'd opened the packet (and charged it). I actually was looking to buy a new phone and got sidetracked, so I didn't do any homework.... my fault... but that guy could have just said "for $100 more you gent get 30G of storage capacity". It's a parallel import place on Queenstreet, good prices, average service.

>>hmmm, praps you should check with the consumers institute about your right to return/swap.

You don't have any right of return if you change your mind. Only if the goods are faulty, and then you are entitled to a replacement, if the seller can't supply a resonable replacement then they have to give you your money back.

Fuck it man.
Get yourself a reel to reel and wear it like a back pack.
If you want high quality get one of these and carry it around. probably twice the response of a 96k SACD

Does anyone else ever get tiny electric shocks from their iPods into their ears?

Ummm No. I would get that looked at, it's probably not wired correctly. and it's trying to earth through your brain...
Then again if you dye your hair Ginge get an afro and start writing books, you could be in for a winner....

Is that bad taste?
