Free to air TV quality

Sure, you could choose to wank on at me about how tv sucks and just don't watch it or shouldn't or whatever. But has free to air tv quality been on a steady decline in the last couple of years? on a week night I used to be able to sit down in the evening and relatively comfortably settle into watching tv quite happily till I went to sleep (amongst doing other things). But now, other than tuesday nights, I almost can't stand watching tv (apart from the odd pocket here and there). Then if home watching tv on a friday or saturday night, its worse!

okay its probably a good thing that I now have to occupy my mind with something more stimulating than mind numbing tv. But its nice to have the option of being able to vege out and watch the box from time to time. I'm not sure if I have just become more discerning about what I watch in recent times, or if tv quality has dropped that much... perhaps a little of both. I possibly value my free time more, so wish not to waste it on what I may have not deemed unwatchable in the past... but I'm pretty sure tv has gotten worse.

kind of one of those age old things I guess, people always seem to be saying tv is getting worse....

Forums: The Bar,

I think it just peaks and troughs - I noticed that right before Christmas everything got wrapped up & aside from a couple of decent Christmas specials (outrageous fortune movie, brilliant; also, ballet-dancing rugby players), there were just reruns, including the movies. I suspect they're just marking time over Christmas holidays, until they start their new season with a bunch of new shows.

BTW, I'm boycotting every single business that advertises in the last two ad breaks of every movie I want to watch.

But anyway, I don't think TV's really declining - the multitude of shows that my friends are torrenting is proof of that - even if TVNZ is slow off the mark in showing them (and then butchers season continuity), it doesn't mean that good TV has gone away.

I've also noticed that my taste has changed - I watch TV1 a whole lot more than I used to, and I've developed a taste for special-interest current affairs shows like artsville & tagata pasifika.

Also, I'm glad that there's not a lot on right now; I've been trying to cut back to just watching the stuff I want to see & then spending the rest of my time in more constructive pursuits. There's a few shows coming up that I'll check out, but I've got a lot of books to get through & a couple of websites to design. Also, fighting.

Off-topic, I always thought I watched too much TV, but my new flatmate is an entirely new experience. When he moved in he said he didn't really watch TV, and I'd check with him that I could watch a movie or something and he'd shrug and say he doesn't mind because he doesn't really watch TV. Thing is, whenever he's home, the TV's on. All The Time! First thing in the morning! He tapes Coronation Street so that he can not-really-watch it at a later date. Seriously, I asked if he was happy taping Corry because it was opposite a couple of shows that I wanted to see, and he shrugged and said that he doesn't really watch it, he just keeps a loose track of what's going on.

constructive pursuits? old person protestant work ethic ahoy. Why after an entire day at the office would you want to go home and do more?

A change is as good as a rest. After staring at a computer screen all day, it's actually very relaxing to potter about the kitchen, or tend to the garden, or kick shit outta some girl.

oh, it sounded like you were against tv cause it was idle, unproductive.

For ones peace-of-mind sake cave_boy I'm gonna go with "free-to-air tv is getting worse".

Thats the way I feel constantly, makes bittorrent work even more for me, and no justifications about getting older, tastes changing really do it for me (if I'm being super honest with myself).

Flight of the Conchords could prove that it may be a NZ thing also. Its going to be weird when NZ tv has to buy a NZ comedy off the americans at big US entertainment biz prices!

I miss Stargate
Lost is a total load of childish wank, the only good thing about it was that it had Michelle Rodriguez in it for a while.

Wow someone else who likes stargate....
Maybe I'm the geek.
Not the second stargate though (Atlantis) It was poo

I got rid of TV from my life years ago. and I would highly recomend everyone else do the same.
Then you wait to see which shows everyone is talking about the most and then you borrow them off Huriana, Who has every series known to mankind on DVD... Except The Mighty Boosh. Which btw is hilarious.

Nathan Barley!

I'm going to have to go with the geek, sorry dust.
The Boosh is mighty funny

My favourite Mighty Boosh moment is Vince recounting the story of his childhood raised in the forest by Bryan Ferry and the subsequent squabble about it... it's a monster pile up of funny lines.

Nathan Barley is pretty great too, but I've had the unfortunate lines "Kicked the brown door in .. painted it white on the way out" lurking in the back of my head since I first saw whichever episode it is where Nathan's bragging about having scored Clair. Jesus.

PS. both that MIA / Diplo / whatever axis and the "nu rave" thing the NME is touting remind me of the "terrorists are gay" art concert in Nathan Barley.

Howard Moon: Just imagine the headlines 'Howard Moon, Colon, Explorer'. Got a ring to that don't it?
Vince Noir: Colon Explorer?
Howard Moon: You know what I saying.
Vince Noir: I think that's got the wrong ring to it.

"You see a peanut... the day's off to a good start. You witness some soil ... it's a jamboree for Vince Noir"
