they're always the wicked - I'm a die-hard old-school fan - love them best when they're the big loose amorphous funkin dub machine doin the original styles - tiki's great - just tends to do the rostah mon a bit too much for my TASTE mon
his rasta/maori mc'ing used to really suit the d&b styles back when salmonella soundsystem first started up, they used to go off... nowadays he (along with mc mana) takes it too far and don't seem know when to just shut the fuck up and let the shit play...it not the best when the d&b show turns into the goddamn TAB.
as a band the last few times I've seen them it's like, the same set that I saw a few years ago, except with their ex-soundman on stage mimicking Shaggy...
i got to say i much prefered them back in the pre UB40 dayz when the 'Dub' part of their name actually had something to do with their sound...but I'm still an assload prouder to say these guys are from my cuntry than say, Zed.
must agree, new stuff is nice for the commerical ear but no big skanking bass lines and crazy funkin riffs to get down and grooooove to, they are trying to be very structured these days too, not as much looseness....and thats not how i think of sal dub. funny how though tiki is now what everyone thinks of sal dub as, which i think is quite unfourtunite....the history is being forgotten
we no forget tho - tiki is very cool ... but i did used to enjoy watching him stroll up from behind the desk and grabbing his gat to join the boys in 'for the love of it' ...
i dig the new sound, but the old was a1 ... its all good tho
they are fukkin rad live tho. I cant speak for the Big Day Out cos I wasn't present, but every other time, I have been most impressed. I agree with how everyone thinks Tiki is Sal Dub, but they all make the majic happen - fair crack of the whip. Both sounds from old school to their recent release Im lovin (;
