Pig Out

Any thoughts, people?

Haven't seen any mention of them on here, but various friends and acquaintances seem to rate them pretty highly and reviews of their CD have been pretty positive (although one I read fucked up and called them "techno" ... um...).

My jaded ear gives their myspace samplings a solid 3 youthful trend-hoppers out of 5 destined-to-be-if-they're-not-already b.net darlings. But, you know, mostly I hate music. :)

Forums: NZ Music,

Stevie Kaye liked them and that guy knows his stuff, but I have to admit I was disappointed. I was hoping for something as fresh as what the Mint Chicks are doing lately (minty fresh?) but yeah, I give it two pairs of black rimmed glasses coupled with severe fringes out of five. But I'm a total hater as well....

Hey I suggest you might want to check out Pig Out's killer live shows before you start saying that the Mint Chicks are better. The Mint Chicks are essentially Split Enz but without the hooks in my opnion....Pig Out also wear their influences on their sleeve, but it's their fresh take on it that is what makes them so special. They totoally bridge the gap between rock and dance culture in a way that most other bands could only dream off.

Tim, send 'em to Wellington, and we'll do exactly that!

Cool....bummer that you missed the show at Sub Nine a couple of weeks back. Never fear, the band are looking at doing another North Island excursion in late January so you to can Pig Out. Dates will be up on the Pinacolada Records myspace once they are confirmed.

indeed! I've really only become aware of the band over the last week or so. Will keep an eye out for the next visit. Cheers Tim.

Heh, that's it! They're dance music for people who aren't dance music fans! Tim, you heard a lot of that "nu rave" stuff that NME, iD etc. are championing in the UK? That "It's a rave Dave!" tune by Trash Fashion, The Klaxons, etc? Basically indie bands covering rave anthems and whatever else, all being lionised for "bridg[ing] the gap between rock and dance culture".

Anyway, it's good synchronicity with the Pig Out album release... hope you manage to score another Pitchfork review with this one.

"...bridg[ing] the gap between rock and dance culture..."

what - like the stone roses, mondays et. al of the late 80s/early 90s?

madchester II?

MadchesterII

hopefully sans once indie kids jumping baggy styles whilst wandering Strand Lane.

"loose fit" is a top tune though.

to the subject at hand, I guess I am a bit voyeristic with PigOut, in that a lot of the appeal is in watching a group who has a member who actually want's to be a POPstar. I don't know that Christchurch reallly experiences this very much, we might be a bit "Understated" in this regard.
Musically i like the "fun" element, and the go for audiance particaption. A actual and wholehearted attempt to get 'em moving, I think I like this part of the performance, where normally i tend top find it repugnent/amaturish/embarassing. Clearly a deicated and fulltime Live Rhythm Section would have long-term benefits for the musical growth of the band, I'm very interested in wether all the touring will mean shit, but I think there is some good people involved in this project and for anyone wanting a good nights heartfelt rock and roll PIGOUT is a very good place to start.

Yeah, in reply to the 'Madchester 2' thing, I think the world is totally ready for it, things move in cycles in this industry and the time is now. So if you missed baggy, acid house, the Mondays et al because you were four years old at the time this is your opportunity.

Essentially we (Pinacolada) like to release music that we really love and feel, and we feel this album man....well aware of the UK 'Nu Rave' thing with the Klaxons et al so its all about timing, energy and commitment. And trust me these guys work fucking hard.In my 16 years in the industry I havent met such a focused bunch of people with such a solid work ethic. They will go far.....just remember you were there to witness it....

The other thing is that we wanted a band who were fun live. This world is so stressful that if we can break down the barrier between audience and performer by reminding people to lose their inhibitions and party then that makes it all worthwhile. The rave is ON!

Oh and Jet a Pitchfork review is in the works for the New Year.

Cheers

I kinda like 'em in a 'reminds-me-of-the-happy-mondays' way.

I was having a few ales on the back deck last evening with a few musicians/opinionated chaps and after the usual discussion about the FN box set/tombstone, I felt it necessary to put an album on that was fresh/interesting and indicative of what the kids are raving to these days. We put the Pig Out album on.
I reckon they're better on record than the live show, reasons being I have a great new stereo amp; I'm an old crank who can't stay out past 1am these days; and the band didn't bring their own sound engineer to the Dogs Bollix that one time - so the bleeps were quiet when they should be overwhelming, and the PA shoulda been humming away at ear-splitting volume...and the kick-drum was floppy & non-existant - not that the dayglow kiddie winkles up the front really cared about all that (they were busy with their own kind of sensory experience all over their candy-coloured overalls...bless.)

Hey Noizy, it must be Xmas for I have arrived in Wellington. I will see you at the pie shop on the corner over the coming days I guess!

// I will see you at the pie shop on the corner over the coming days I guess!

ha! I'll be up AK way, taking it easy out at the bach at karekare.

enjoy the pies though. Chicken curry is the bomb.

Chicken curry = sold out! I settled for a steak & cheese today. And the 20/20 cricket was rained out...no wonder you Wellington people all head up to the Auckland beaches for Xmas. Still, great fun watching the Cook Strait ferry going up and down on a 6-8 metre swell. Heavy.

totally dig this album

very happy mondays

rave on!

I have to admit I never liked the Happy Mondays... I'm listening to Bone Thugs at the mo, tho, so take what I say with a grain of salt. ;)

I am really impressed by the big dumb fun stance... I guess the rock'n'rollers like the Datsuns were into that too, but unabashed party vibes and roughness seems like a good thing (check their comments about recording vox on their myspace). (Well aware I don't champion this shit at all in my own music...)

Bone Thugs..you crazy cat!

I just found Tupac. Bit late in the whole peice though...

Is it bad to like that Bone Thugs song with Phil Collins in it?

Just witnessed a killer gig at Doublehappy in Chch tonite....this band are on fire at the moment!New tour dates up soon!

Happy New Year everyone, and all the best for 2007...................XTim.

Nice of you to wish the members of the Black Seeds et al a happy new year. :)

The first time I caught Pig Out after they changed from House of Dolls I had no idea what to make of them, but i've since seen them twice more and DAMN, they get better and better!

definitely a lot of a good fun to be had at a Pig Out show, and the peeps in the band are super nice, so i'm definitely glad they're getting some well deserved recognition.

Last time I talked to Marie she said that Pig Out have toured 5 times in like 6 months! Them and The Shaky Hands win the Will award for dedication to touring! sexy.

Totally agree. Pig Out are wonderful people and their music is a whole lot of fun, not only that, its actually good too!! :)

This just to hand.... Pig Out are hitting the road again over the next few weeks hot on the heels of a plethora of rave reviews for their debut album 'Club Poems', which has just been released by Pinacolada Records.

You can catch the band live at the following dates:

January 31st Wellington @ MVP w/- Holiday With Friends
February 2nd Auckland @ Coherent w/- North Shore Pony Club and DJ Acid On Toast
February 23rd Christchurch @ Dux de Lux
February 27th Christchurch @ Orientation (w/- Concord Dawn and Minuit)
March 3rd @ Peringer Winery Cental Otago (w/-Shapeshifter and Kora)

The 'Club Poems' album was Critic's choice as one of the Top 10 albums of 2006 in 'Real Groove' magazine. Pig Out will be dropping tunes from the album live as well as a few new tracks that they have been working on.

Time to dance yo' ass off.....

Tim.
