aint it funny how the topic of origin shifts so rapidly to arguments:

My intention is not to stab at the cast and creators of lotr's, but at the global perception of New Zealand and it's people.
At the moment I travelling abroad, so I hear enuf and see enuf promotion of the movie to say what I am saying. However this is my own perception, someone else may see it totally different.

Lord of the Rings is an awesome movie, and having met some of the cast I have great respect for them.
I am just tired of hearing about PJ, and all the major cast and crew of the movie, and the praise to our beautiful country, when most of the people I've asked if they know about the people of NZ, the majority think all kiwi's are Maori, and live like Once Were Warriors.

Peoples thoughts should not be shot down in flames, as our thoughts are one of the greatest things that makes as all human and individual.

oh annasmith - clean your ears out - listen to smashing pumpkins for another possible origin of that damn bassline - mogwai ripped THEM off (is what anna'd say - not me - uh uh - no way:)

here's a quick comparison of jakob / mogwai

mogwai = 3 guitars / 1 bass / drums ... more unplugged sounding - even a little precious - in a good way - lots of breathy close-miked vocals (sim to hdu) - their recordings are awesome - wooden then roaring then harmonising then brutal - very present and in the room with you - pins drop etc - quite experimental at times with hiss and squeaks and buzz

jakob = 1 guitarist / 1 bass / drums ... phenominally large resonating sound - very slick and driving melodic and fat and trancing and groovalicious - and they sound even more that way live - lots of forwards and reverse delays over simple beautiful melodies - that erupt into storming great waves of harrrrdness

jakob have been making their music longer than any accusations of ripping off mogwai can justify.... jeff's had his delay pedals since he was a wee lad - and there's plenty of original juices flowing between the three of them

Here we go again - that old notion "all kiwi music is good music, support it...OR ELSE". Sorry, mate - while some NZ music is definitely worth supporting (eg. Shihad, Neil Finn, SJD etc.) a fair proportion of it is as loathsome as any bad international music (eg. K'Lee, Zed, Concorde Dawn). Why should we stand behind crap music just because it's from NZ - the fact that's it's from NZ doesn't make it any better. Let Anna listen to what she wants, and don't bash her for simply "showing disrespect" for NZ music.

gotta agree with mr t on that one. its easy to name at least two of those bands who think your an idiot and that jakob are wicked, if not all of them. does anyone from any of these bands have anything to add?

my cover...blown..curses. constructive? Andoru..I made all my constructive comments on the "jakob" forum. I see no more similarites in mogwai/jakob as i do in any other band, if anna smith is too nieve to not pick up the differences in the "noise" genre as there are in the "pop" genre then she should shut up. Even every bloody mass produced boy/girl group while they play the same old bullshit and the same Euro beat beneath every song, they are different (har to believe..i know :o)

I see similar riffs played time and time again in the rock scene, christ do you really think that when you write a riff, no one has ever played it before?? generally when i write music i write from stuff that inspires me my song titles usually go "shihad song", "stereo bus song","bailterspace song". because i write the music first, not the lyrics. i mean the majority of music written, if you look hard enough you can find other similar music.
I used to be a "hey look this riff sounds like this riff wanker" until last week when i was pointing out a blatant riff steal of grinspoon from R.A.T.M when Nik (cheers bro) said "shut up, cunt...get over it...it just fuckn happens"

I fully agree about what you were saying about the noise genre. I mean it in some ways is a EXCLUSIVE CLUB! haha We get it so does jakob everyone gets it who try and do it!

I tryed Extremely hard to get Jakobs first release when it first came out.
I have heard the new album but to me it aint quite up there. But still v good

I reckon it's up there... not perhaps in all it's tracks or all it's originality...
but definately up there in it's overall power and execution - and how well the tracks come across live - they are awesome - must be cranked

and here's another reason jakob's so great - fully fekkin cranked it has absolutely no un-necessary distortion - them guitars are coming out full-bodied and harrrd - pure mastery
