The New Stuff - Shihad

Whatever the new name, let's talk about the new stuff. It's definitely on everyones topic of the week list.

So far I've heard the new stuff at Valve which was apparently same set list as BDO... Comfort Me, Semi Normal, Bulletproof, Nothing

What's everyones thoughts?

Forums: NZ Music,

i liked semi normal, name has got a bit of a "nu metal" ring to it, but it was a VERY cool song. Comfort me was a great epic anthem track, gonna be the huge sing-a-long song. Bulletproof was fuckn ace.

Its once again kick ass Shihad music! I was at the big day out and heard sum new stuff there the whole performance went off and I for one thought thier new stuff was real good i even found myself knowing the words after half the song

Semi-normal is definitely cool as is Comfort Me but I'd need some time with Nothing and Bulletproof before making final judgement.

yes bulletproof has something that doesn't quite gel with me - not in a major way, but I found myself resisting it. Nothing is growing on me very fast (what a sentence!).

On the "less than 5 listens Chart" it's as follows for me:

1. Comfort Me
2. Semi-Normal
3. Nothing
4. Bulletproof

I think the big thing is going to be what the production is like.

For the record this is who Josh Abraham has worked with: Korn, Limp Biscuit, Orgy, Depeche Mode, Power Man 5000, Ice Cube and Cold Chamber.

Very interesting to see Shihad going into this territory...

also, there is the small matter of him producing one of the highest selling metal (well, rock anyway) albums of 2001, break the cycle by staind.

aother couple of relevant points, i feel: he produced early korn, not the impotent cliched korn we hear today. and the only limp bizkit producing he's done is a remix of one song - not too extensive in that field thank god.

I hate that, when someone has done like one song or accidentally picked up a copy of a well known artist's album, all of a sudden a big deal is made out of it.

What the fuck all those bands are terrible. Old stuff new stuff what ever it is terrible!

Oh well let hope shihad make a million dollars.

umm well actually I think the point is that Shihad are still in control of their sound, which is clearly evident by the new songs we have heard so far - the songs fit well within their existing body of work, maybe even harking back to some earlier sounds.

Just try to IMAGINE a Shihad song produced by someone who has produced Orgy songs. While I don't like any of the bands above, I think it's a perfect match for Shihad. When I imagine the results of a process like this, I get a real sense of excitement that haven't had for a while, maybe since BadMotorFinger... come on use your imagination... it's good for you, promise.

I think there is a small but very real chance that they will make a song or two that the whole rockin world will celebrate, honestly.

also, you don't have to become Limp Bizkit to compete with Limp Bizkit, but you do have to have one hellova well produced album, with great songs.

andoru man, i think shihad know whats best for themselves - josh abraham is obviously a successful producer, and knocking him because of the bands he's produced before is like not going out with a really great girl cos you don't like her ex-es..... crazy.

alot of people think that producers have a magical wand in which they transform the band to 'their style' - which is shit; shihad will still be shihad, they write the songs and have full control over the creative process..... the producer is either good or bad and just because you don't like the bands he's been involved with doesn't mean he's bad. in fact the figures would suggest he has the goods to produce success (no pun intended hehe)

dust took the rest of the words out of my mouth.......

andoru your post would have been a lot nearer the mark if you had just put "let hope shihad make a million dollars'.

cya

Yes jimi you are right sorta.
BUT! let me explain and i hope no sorta mike hunt thing gets brought down on me.
General Electric was pretty weak really compared to the killjoys and Churns.
Now they went with a Big producer for that. Now they have gone with a BIGGER producer for this. I have to be skeptical about it slightly. I dont want another general Electric (bar my mind sedate) with bigger production values. But another Killjoy type with Big production would be fucking awesome!

sorry to sound like a cunt

ok i see what you're saying now. the problem is that i love the general electric...... so do alot of people and i think a lot of people would be happy to see the same sort of music come from the band.

but now we're on personal choice and i can't argue with you about that.

wait on a minute.... which depeche mode album? i have heard untra and it is fantastic!... they have somevery good stuff.... exciter wasnt great though.

They played another new one at Valve, a ballad Jon wrote, dunno what it was called possibly "weight of the World" anyway ... just from seeing them at Valve it was a solid 5 outta 5 for the new stuff I reckon. First time I heard Nothing I immediately loved it. That chorus just does it for me. Comfort Me is proboably a stronger song tho and not I'm not totally sold on Bulletproof... yet.

What struck me was that these new songs made a lot of sense of The General Electric. They've gone with the winners from that and taken it further... progressing (gasp) from songs like sport and religion which had something about them but possibly missed the mark, to these new songs that seem more complete, finely tuned and well, for want of a better term, nailed.

I was so hoping that they would play a fuller version of "weight of the world" at Big Day Out, I know, I know, in one day!?!
To me it seems like they are trying something different with the new stuff, instead of the songs progressing in the expected fashion they run the other way such as Bulletproof I think where it has that meaty bit in the intro, then the song goes softer and when it comes to the chorus instead of the meaty bit again it is a subdued version. Damn, I really need to hear them again.

blaaaaaaaaargghhhhhhhhhh
i cant take it anymore.... please stop talking about these new songs*
I NEED THAT CD!!!!!!!!!!!!

*i don't seriously expect you to stop talking just because i'm going crazy having not heard the new stuff

no we don't take anything you say seriously jimi, *humour ie: relax mate*Comfort me is in the same vein as pacifier (i think), they where going for a huge vocal sound at BDO bit to much cheese on top for me with that one, again how it comes out on the record will be the mustard cutter.
Bullet proof was the one that didn't immediatly grab me but thats good kinda like it was more sophisticated.
Nothing - i really liked that one.
Jon said it'll be the best "shihad" album ever
so argue with him if you can (no - one in particular).

hmmm well i was trying to inflict my brand of humour on the forum - that failed miserably.

cheers for the write ups tho. i guess i'll just have to wait and see, but you know that feeling when something seems so close but you know it's gonna take forever to come; grrrrrrr!

woooo went to the BDO and of course went ot Shihad. new songs were pretty cool, i dont remember which ones were called what though so i cant really comment on them by name. it was good it rained though cause i was getting bloody hot in the pit. oh anyway on the producer thingy: feelers apparently had a producer that did The Pixies and from what i've heard its complete shite, so i guess it works both ways. it doesnt matter who the producer is.
oh yea and someone else in a previous post said that sport and religion missed the mark: i always thought that was a fuckin cool song.
wooooo.

hey, one of the new songs is called 'bulletproof' and a while back big cunt Mike made the comment " ....your not bullet proof big fella" or something to that effect!! - what are the chances that these things are related? i don't know it was just a thought?

go the NZM forums, rawwk the world.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

a very 'REMOTE' chance perhaps

...went to the BDO website and had a look at the shihad highlights. it has them playing 'Bulletproof' and its a fuckin cool song. i dont know why everyone has been sayin they didnt like it that much, i reckon it goes off...
