Music stores in Sydney

Okay okay... So I know this is slightly not NZ music but hell!

Anyway, I am heading to Sydney next week and want to do some further troving of secondhand and new indie-rock vinyl... anyone out there got any ideas for Sydney CBD?

...er hello? Is this thing on?

Forums: NZ Music,

You could try Red Eye. That's the most well known of the independent shops that I know of. Definitely has some vinyl, but can't remember if it's second-hand or what. I think it is.

They're on the web.

If you feel like jumping on a bus (or a long walk) head to Egg Records in Newtown (its a few kms south from Central Station..)

link below is a blog by a guy who works there - i can't remember the exact address (i just happened to be exploring Sydney for a couple of days last week).

Pretty cool store, with lots and lots of vinyl (not necessarily that cheap, but worth a look if you can get out there..)..Newtown is worth a browse around anyway, lots of bookstores, second hand clothing etc...

Cheers!

Will definatley ahve a look at those two when I get a chance.

And cheers Grusome for the keyboards a while back :)

no worries :)

There is also a rock music store which is on George Street, down some stairs ... next to a big Hoyts. The name escapes me, but it has a decent selection, plus a good range of clothes too.

After further thinking, it may be called Ground Zero.

Cheers all, it was a sucessful trip!

Red eye is fantastic! Second hand sections??? No!!! Two second hand stores???? YES!!!

Bliss :)

Also found Utopia records out on Broadway. Very large selection of second and used. Very nice.

The haul (just cus):

Slint (EP)
Nirvana (Unplugged in NY)
Tortoise (Its all around you)
Kraftwerk (Man Machine)
Radar Bros (And the surrounding mountains)
Johnny Cash American V ($7.00!!!)
Mum (Yesterday was dramatic - today is okay)
The Black Keys - (The big come up)
Black Sabbath (Master of Reality)

I don't want to seem rude but you didn't seem to get anything that isn't readily available locally...
Cheaper maybe though eh....

For sure man! Cheaper definatley - by a long long way. Although I would say that the only way to get many of these is to order them in international. I have seen the Nirvana/Slint/Johnny Cash locally but never at prices I was willing to pay (comp $40NZ for Slint vs $15AUS). And part of the whole obsession is the trawl through the bins anyway...

...in the end, I am pleased :)

I spent a couple of hours drooling in Amoeba in San Fran, and I was just shocked at how cheap records were - like Gish brand new and sealed for $9.95, OK Computer new for $20 - I've only ever seen it once here, and that was second-hand and $60. I'm just glad that you can bring back 46kg of luggage, because between the records and the votive candles, I was definitely pushing the limits.

Oz shops are definately cheaper, CDs like $15 to $25 new (am i right, that is what i recall) but Slow Boat would pretty much have most of that stuff your bought. I got Spiderland new for $22 i think. Redeye is good though.

What i really like about shores over seas is the 7"s.Purely the realm of nerds but i LOVE them. I just got a Karen Dalton 7 from slowboat and it is the best thing i have heard all year. Which is a shame as its from 1971. 7s at Roughtrade in London were about five pounds or so which i guess is not that cheap but man they had some goos stuff. Blah blah wank wank.

Good haul you git though. Its All Around You is a much under rated record and has the best cover I have ever seen. The Lithium Shifts is sublime.

Hmmm, I don't know about slowboat having most of the stuff I got... I am not going to dispute that it is a great store, but I have never seen Mum/Tortoise there - and I do look. Thier new stuff is not cheap either...

I think the main point is that it would be hard to get these records in one day in any city in NZ... so in that respect YE-HAW!

But either way... nerd it up yall!!!

Yeah i guess they wouldn't have everything in ALL the time. Which is kinda the thing. You have to hawkishly get stuff as it comes through Slowboat or Real Groovy and at whatever silly price gets chucked on it. I try to avoid spending more than $30 on a record unless I really want it. Coz you know that it will be so much cheaper overseas.

Slowboat sometimes get these huge import orders in that are seafreighted I think. That is a good time as they usually get in every Velvets album and every Krasftwerk album etc all in the $20-$25 range so you can stock up on those important gaps in your collection. Of course paying like $45 for Ok Computer or something just makes me mad. They should never cost that much.

But dude, Ok Computer! It's not like it's One World or something...

I spent some, ok most of my evening today (when I wasn't shoving all I can eat sushi down my mouth) at Tower Records in Tokyo and damn. I didnt make it past the first two floors, so much good Japanese music.

The CDs aren't too much cheaper in Japan, but they do seem to have some specials going and there is always those Japan only bonus tracks...

So yeah, I recommend that people check out Perfect Piano Lesson, the new Ellegarden (it sounds phat and a lot better than the last album), Copeland and Mo'Some Tonebender (if you haven't already). And I haven't even started to explore the hip hop. Damn.

I was really impressed with JB Hi-fi in Sydney, much better than Melbourne. They look as cheesy as hell, with their bright yellow decor, but they had stuff i'd never SEEN in real life on CD and then as i left i noticed it was all there on vinyl too! Music on the whole seems to be much cheaper in Aus. Sound & Fury was another great Sydney store, the best i've ever seen in fact. Great selection of CD, Vinyl and DVDs, nice layout and wicked instores on the weekends, which they later released as limited edition CDRs. Sadly closed a couple of months back - operating more as a label now i believe.

OK Computer is a great great score!!! I think I got it in NZ before the price jumped to $60.

Last time I was over in Melbourne I think I got Kid A for $20 or something ridicluous like that...

I didn't find JBL in Sydney (Darn eh?). I was at it in Melbourne though...

Incidentally, where are the indie/rock vinyl nights in wellington??? Other than in my lounge :)

This could be an untapped market?

UTOPIA! This is the place I was thinking of! Downstairs and next to a Hoyts, right?

//You have to hawkishly get stuff as it comes through Slowboat or Real Groovy and at whatever silly price gets chucked on it. I try to avoid spending more than $30 on a record unless I really want it. Coz you know that it will be so much cheaper overseas.

Ah yeah, you could also get a lot from SmokeCDs or NZMusic Store at probably the consistently cheapest local pricing around. You know the people, stores, and company that allows us to run this site, the forums and this topic. Smoke and NZM goes to a lot of effort to keep costs down.

Sam, can I ask - do you deliberately not mention Smoke or NZM Store or am I misreading posts in this past and present??? No drama, just seems a bit too much of a coincidence that on occassions when one talks about getting music (discussions on this site), you are straight onto the Slowboat boat, or even Real Groovy (at $35 a CD!!). Bit blatant... or no?? Just curious.

And don't get me wrong - we're all friends and fans of Slowboat. Not so much of Real Groovy and the 'punters will pay any price' strategy tho...

At risk of butting into the conversation & talking nonsense, there are two factors that would cause me to shop somewhere other than smoke:

First and most obvious is that online stores aren't really conducive to browsing. I think during these discussions, online stores just don't really occur to people because there aren't any bins to sift through. From what I gather that's the main appeal of slowboat. I don't think it's really a problem as such; just I don't think you should take it too personally if smoke doesn't get a mention.

The other factor is probably something that'll be addressed with time: I'll shop at smoke cds whenever I can, for the kiwi music, and whatever recent releases I'm into. However, if I'm looking for something obscure, I'm far more likely to get a hit on the real groovy site. Moreover, the "sorry, no results found" message that comes up on the smoke site has the feeling of a closing door - end of discussion kind of thing. Perhaps if smoke had a wee "request" option on that page, I'd be more inclined to continue the dialogue - wait & see if smoke can source whatever I'm looking for, especially since I'd end up paying a better price. Just an idea.. granted it'd take some quite considerable resources for doing that kind of footwork, with unclear returns...

I'll add factors three and four: second-hand is often cheaper, and Smoke doesn't have very much vinyl.
