Xtra Broadband extremely slow

Survey: Has anyone else been experiencing really poor speeds with Xtra based broadband accounts (incluyding the resellers such as Orcon, IHug, Telstra etc etc etc)?

Everyone I know who has such an account has had terrible speeds in last 2 weeks. I know there was some kind of news article on it somewhere also.

Telecom NZ must surely be the worst telco in the Western world?

Forums: The Bar,

it's days like this I congratulate myself on being sucked into a telstraclear hard-sell on a phone/sky/internet cable deal.

Following complaints over Telecom Xtra’s broadband advertising, the Commerce Commission says that in its opinion, Xtra may have breached the Fair Trading Act by misleading the public as to the characteristics of its DSL service.

Specifically, the Commission points to the terms “up to” and “theoretical speed”. It says Xtra could not supply the “up to” speeds promised on a consistent basis and the “theoretical speeds” were unobtainable, according to Deborah Battell, director of the Commission’s Fair Trading Branch.

The Commission is also expressing concern over Xtra’s use of terms such as “faster and cheaper” and any combination thereof.

These terms may mislead customers as to what they can expect to receive since not all service offerings will be both faster and cheaper.

//These terms may mislead customers as to what they can expect to receive since not all service offerings will be both faster and cheaper.

hahahaha, "XTRA: FASTER XOR CHEAPER!"

Yeah I have the old Telstra cable wired into the home but cancelled it recently due to overage charges. Orcon have been outstanding until recently when all they can really do is resell Telecoms services.

The article above is what I expect generally from Xtra. What I'm talking about in Wellington in the last 5 days or so is WAY worse than that - I'm talking dial-up speeds or less. Drop-outs requiring modem hard reset every 90mins (as in 10-20 times a day!). So bad that I am genuinely motivated to support anyone taking this new low to media or court...

Nah nothing like that I am what you would call a heavy user.
Definately faster, and I live in Wilton which isn't particularly close to the central hub for wellington

Telecom has indicated that they will approach those affected, or if you think you are give them a buzz. Too simple, eh? We will see...

Mine's been faster if anything.
probably twice as fast.
Maybe it is to do with switching for this Unleashed thing
But then again my landlord who lives above me does work for telecom, and he owns the account.

But I do think that Telecom NZ is crap.
The first time Vint Cerf came here he said that he hadn't experienced internet this slow since being in the back-waters of inland China....
I think that says it all

Well Korea has broadband as a standard in all homes!
Dial up is used exclusively for what it is meant to be used, low level automaton networking bollox, coke machines auto reordering their stock and shit like that.
But no in NZ most people use dial-up to surf the web, which also slows the web down.
and they get charged $30 for the privilage.
Telecom can bite my moulded clay ass

nice

Telecom can bite [Golem's] moulded clay ass

I would pay to see that :)

Long live cable internet! Especially as I would be unemployed if it ever disappeared.

Blast! witout paying to subscribe this doesnt show you what i read in cardcopy or consumer. but in a brief nutshell what the article explain is that becuase of limits still being imposed on the lines (thanks NZ government) - there are some (a majority apparantly acc to Telecum) people that have "bigger faster fandangily internet" but at the expense of others, particularly in rural areas, so basically, xtra sucks, and im not sure if telstra is any better but i find them ok...

I use this site quite a bit for checking out broadband options...

In the current state of NZ internet I just can't find it worth while to fork out for a home connection. Specially with their stupid peak usage (use more than 700mb in one day and get bumped into the high usage pool) - but at least they've backed down on the 200mb an hour idea (which would have had most users up shit creek).

tell your kids who are the criminals who let this happen.
many still in parliment.

Richard Prosser of all people, was calling for the restoration of the Death Penalty for treason, mainly to deal to these types.

me, I'm pro-life , but I think I actually agree with the sentiment.

Every Business fest I been to same complaint, #1 problem for NZ business is shit internet.
and these paragons of virtue should know eh?

Telecom is consistently shit for me. I live on the Te Aro end of Mt Cook so... presumably I'm close to whatever we should be close to to have the awesomest speed ever. But our connection is never extraordinarily fast and the connection is shaky at best. Some days it just doesn't work at all despite unplugging the wireless modem several times. So shit broadband is what I have come to expect. But I dont' want to have to pay start up fees again and blah blah. Same old reason everyone sticks with Telecom. Laziness.

//Some days it just doesn't work at all despite unplugging the wireless modem several times.

I'd bet a lot of your problem lies with wireless.

more XTRA broadband complaints...
