IMO, its getting harder and harder to get enthusiastic about this event nowadays - it seems to me that the organisers are inviting back artists that are "safe" and have proven their BDO credentials (in some cases only having done BDO two years ago), instead of maybe trying to get some interesting and new bands that haven't been down this way before....maybe its getting tired?

Short answer: yes.
Maybe I'm not the core demographic anymore, but I'm a long way from motivated to go this year.
I'm wondering though if it's actually more due to this year in music being very poor in the mainstream ~ emerging mainstream area.

so not the target market but am quite interested to see John Cooper Clark and have a suspician that band he supports on tour a lot might make the next announcement... well maybe its just a dream but it'd justify the purchase price alone IMO to see the fall (crosses digits)
so doesn't need a revamp - the formula works - why change it.... Its a fun day out and sometimes musically (for me) it is awesome
I'd prefer a really cutting edge musical festival like the All Tomorrows Parties or something similar, but the BDO has never really been that and no one would go anyways

I saw The Cult ... Fantastic
IMO BDO is running on it's own fumes a little now.
Dust's right on the uninteresting mainstream deal though.
ATP would be awesome but it would totally flop here.
Most people aren't even interested in the bands that are already in NZ doing interesting things.

it always seemed that originally the big day out was definately of the "alternative" bent. It was a "freak fest" and you could always count on their being madly dressed up people and some alternative acts playing...over the past 5 years the Big Day Out has been getting more and more mainstream and now it seems that somebody with face paint on is as "crazy" as it gets.
I would assume that somewhere along the line maybe they got burnt bigtime one year and decided to play it safer after that by gloing after the bogan dollar. Everyone knows bogans and 17 year olds are happy to fork out big bucks for bands they like so booking bands like Muse, My Chemical Romance, Tool, The Killers is about as safe as you could get.
Big Day Out themselves are aware of the "mainstream rock" look to this years event, last years wasa certainly more on the alt/indie angle...iggy, go team, 2 many djs, sleater-kinney, greenhornes, franz, mars volta etc...
What gets me excited is that the most exciting bacts at the BDO this year are all local: The Mint Chicks, Jakob, Shaky Hands, David Kilgour, Dimmer and there are still some great local bands going to be announced in the next one.
I'm actually looking forward to this years BDO cause for once there aren't many bands I want to see...so its going to be a nice relaxing day, won't have to be running between stages all day. haha, though maybe its just me trying to find a positive angle.

If you're looking for an ATP, and since I'm totally ripping off the whole concept of ATP cause i can't afford to go to one:

Your boys own camping trip Blink looks grand, though I personally am too dull to consider going to any festival where I don't know whose playing with the knowledge that I'd be surrounded by young people drinking booze, throwing up, mating and having the time of their lives... if you ever do a rest home version, I'll be there... or one slightly closer to home, port waikato would make for a good spot to consider for future camp outs
For me its far easier to plod along to the BDO and take it as it comes, which suits me fine. I get to see some acts I really like, stumble upon some I am unsure of and usually see some I can happily bitch about how crap they were - a well balanced day in other words
// if you ever do a rest home ...

aye...this is coming, chalet accomodation for all, meals provided, bands playing inside only, extremely limited numbers, cozy fireplaces, beautiful location..and with bands actually announced beforehand..however, its gonna be Winter 2007 (fingers crossed)...and down in the deep deep south - all going to plan...as its still just a sketch in my notebook (as RATM would say)
got a few treking down from the tron for the camp in feb, including three tron bands thus far, possibly a fourth, who could they be? I couldn't possibly comment.

It is weird how the line-up is sort of appropriate and righteous but weirdly boring. For example: Tool surely will be much better than Metallica, are ex-alt, pretty arty etc ~ but I really don't give a fuck.

aye. no matter how much i find tool incredibly boring now...ie: walked out of their last show 5 songs in, I am still very curious to see what their BDO show is gonna be like..and if they play a typical BDO greatest hits set (though TWS didn't last year)
I suppose that My Chemical Romance will ...
I suppose that My Chemical Romance will have a HUGE show as well?
Tragic to admit this, but I kinda like one or two of their songs for pure pop fare. One track off the last album and 1.5 off the new album ~ rest is shite.

I wrote this whole tirade about falling outside the demographic and were are my precious bands and then deleted it realising I need to move overseas or time my holidays better. On that note, anyone know a good site (other that pollstar) to find out what bands are playing in Japan?
I glad to see Lupe Fiasco on the bill though.
