Shit yeah, I love a lot of these guys music!
And it's true they do get overlooked here, even by people who listen to this style of sound.
Sad really. I think some of NZ's most celebrated music is only known to about 1% of the population.
Ah where's Black Boned Angel though... And Gate... Dean Roberts... Rosy Parlane...
Rosy & Dion Workman's Sigma Editions is my favourite Kiwi label. Actually, I think less than half of the releases are by New Zealanders, but whatever.
I don't really imagine any of these bods try to be well-known in NZ.
Listened to a Dean Roberts track the other week that sounded an awful lot like (British band) Hood. The vague irony being that Hood always name-drop 80s Flying Nun records as influential.
The song I heard is at the link I posted above ... yep, it's off 'Be Mine Tonight'. Quite a few Kiwis relevant to this topic have been released on Kranky.
Sub Lumina is a wicked release... I hear that the next is even better.
1/3 Octave Band is Jules from Letterbox Lambs and another fellow (some adult, I think.)
This local noise shit is the BOMB... they're breaking ground all over the place. They're right up there with Wolf Eyes and Sunn O))) as far as noise goes as far as I'm concerned.
Tomorrow night's Deep show is going to have a big focus on these NZ noise people... 1/3 Octave Band, Seht, Birchville Cat Motel, The Stumps, Kahu, Audible 3... 11pm tomorrow night on Radioactive 89fm.
... plus some ambient Mono and Mogwai that I found on vinyl... plus whatever Scout comes up with :)
