London-based prog/trance duo (L.O.S.T. & Hatstandy Andy) make their debut full release... If you like their mix of Spyhop's "Domino" (QOH007), their first ever production to be put out, then you are in for a real treat. The Original Mix of MANKIND is a prog/trance tune with massive soundscapes made from the class-a synth-fest. This amazing production is backed up by two mixes by the duo separately, with both keeping the feel of the original to a huge extent. Hatstandy Andy's Breaks Mix is pure breakbeat suited to proggy jocks, and the L.O.S.T. Remix is a prog/trance affair which has a sublime use of those very synths. Mmmm. To top all off we got Tim Richards in on the action, and he has come up with a belter of a mix. As usual with New Zealands finest export, this one sits somewhere between House and Prog.

QUEEP ORGANIC HOUSE

http://www.queeporganicmusic.com ]

Forums: NZ Music,

Trance and 'organic' house? What is this, the late 90's again? Errghh.

Hey QUEEP, you probably noticed by now that these forums don't handle HTML or BBCode. I'm one of the mods, I tried to tidy your post so people can at least copy and paste the links OK.

As for the 90s quip... shit, look at the state of indie music...

I'm not congratulating indie music for the de-popularisation of inane electronic genres - they achieved that all by themselves, by being stink to start with.

Just so I don't seem like a complete fuckwit, I had a listen to 'MakesMeWhoIAm_OriginalMix.mp3' and as I expected, it's really dull 90's douff douff.

Oh, sorry, didn't think you were talking about musical genres as a popularity contest... I was just meaning that indie is more backwards-looking than house or trance.

Heh, just had a listen to the same MP3. I don't like this kind of thing, but it gave me a big grin to hear the guy earnestly intoning with a completely un-affected accent.

Mmm. It didn't make me grin - actually I found it kind of creepy - he sounds like some old hippy on a home made meditation tape you might pick up at a new age fair.

These types of monologues make me gag - a mix of primary school poetry and earnest self affirming mumbo jumbo.

When I'm at the club
It's around me
My mind is open
My inhibitions set free (?)
Experiencing what is here
It's my beat
It's my people
It's the music that makes me who I am
No one can tell me what to do
No one can tell me who to be
This is my connection
Where I belong
Where I am tonight
Nothing else matters
It's the music that makes me who I am

I guess I'm finding this interesting because I thought that people had stopped making this kind of rubbish. But I suppose it's no more stupid than the nonsense on the new album by 'The Killers', just a different kind of nonsense.

Isn't one of the good things about electronic music the progression of new forms? Although this kind of music may well become trendy again in the future in a of kitsch and jokey kind of way, I can barely comprehend how anyone has the gumption to try and keep proliferating it today.

Yeah, I don't like this kind of monologue, but it's been one aspect of dance music for a good... 20-30 years now? So I found it funny to hear a Kiwi accent on it instead of someone from Chicago or a European guy talking almost-perfect English.

As for popularity, check the link ... definitely still going, even if it's not ubiquitous. I do talk to people every day who like music like this!

Re: electronic music being innovative, well I think this type of stuff is first and foremost dance music, whatever the means of making it. Complaining about its inanity or lack of development is like being fucked off at AC/DC or other bogan dance music for the same reasons. I guess some people did bitch that the Datsuns were churning out a dead sound when they blew up, but I reckon that's kinda off the mark... it doesn't really matter if it's all really familiar, in fact that's probably part of the appeal to its fans.

Ramble on... not sure why I'm (sort of) defending a kind of music I'm not interested in, I guess I'm just surprised that anyone is surprised about this kind of thing still going on.

PS. QUEEP maybe try obscure.co.nz and biggie.co.nz for a more responsive audience.

AC/DC and other standard rock/pop musics generally adhere to traditional folk music forms which have been with us for a good 200-400 years (or longer depending on what music cultures and how flexible the form definition is).

I guess you could argue that the form of douff has been around since the dawn of time. You could even argue that house also adheres to folk music form. I reckon both argument are pretty flimsy.

I tend to believe that electronic dance music forms, such as House, were new musical forms, not just derivatives on ancient tribal musical forms. They were dependant on their digital technologies for their conception, their form was sculpted by club drugs, their actual musical form shared similarities with 60's psychedelic rock, or perhaps experimental jazz, but far more rehearsed and rigid - they were new. They were also overtly concerned with the future, a recipe for disaster if longevity is one of the aims of your art form. Sometime ago, popular culture started to mock House, Trance and a host of other electronic dance genres - they've been suffering ever since.

Earlier this century, the 70's disco vs. rock scenario played out once again, but I reckon this is just a blip. Technology may lead us toward new musical forms that will crush the existing ones, or we (the 'we' that probably aren't born yet) may reclaim earlier popular western musical forms (Victorian parlour songs, Strauss waltzes) and stamp them as the new popular music. If this reclamation happens, you can be sure that they'll be pretty true to the original version - after all, the fashion worked once for humans will probably work again. I kind of like AC/DC but it's a grim prospect that my grandchildren will like them too.

I did a quick myspace culture crawl of Tim Richards and his friends, and from my perspective, his network appear to mostly late twenties ecstasy burn out children. Some of them are clearly sliding down the slippery rock vs. disco slope, toward indie rock. They'll get there too late, just like my dumbass friends in London who finally made the slide to electronic dance forms in the year 2000 - and gave me all their British punk and new wave records from the 70's and 80's.

Tim's other friends are approaching their thirties and are 'only going out once this year' - I could be wrong, but this this kind of statement smells to me like the drugs are interfering with raising the children. Don't get me wrong, I have children, and I actually really like E, but it never makes me want to flail around to douff.

Anyway, this whole conversation seems to be mostly for my benefit, and it helps me shape my wayward ideas.

Cheers Jet.

what a load of bollocks...

of all electronic genres house is the least concerned with innovation or progression, if anything its a regressive genre as it is always looking backwards not forwards for inspiration and material to sample (plunder) the only real progression is in the tools required to create the music

first up Jet! thanks so much for sorting that out... im no wiz myself so got lost in the code jungle :0 muchos gracios!

nice debate goin on, tho i have to say ive been listening to it for years, and myself have been waiting for some totally new genre to pop up out of nowhere for the past decade... i suppose my own spin on it is that every generation or so we get a bit of a revolution musically, and something decent happens... dance music back in the late 80's was the last time it happened for me... tho u could say that the rise of hip hop and rn'b in the 90's was one of those things... not sure tho, cause it aint had much effect on my life...

anyhows, this release is not meant to be groundbreaking in any way, just a good solid diverse house release... but have to say the kiwi accent (thats done very well) is something a bit different, and thats one of the things that made us grab it

the orig mix does have a slightly retro feel for sure, for a more up to date sound check out the da fresh mix, its the sort of style thats the choice of most jocks are toying with nowadays, if the charts on the ownload stores are anything to go by, bit of an electro vibe.

have to totally disagree with you mansion on the words of the track, i think they are quite cool, and would be uplifting with a totally mashed crowd, its all feel good vibes really, thats what its all about, something to make you smile when ur on the floor, I think ur thinking a bit too deep on it, this is designed for dancefloors & thats the real test of how it would work... people sippin pints & whatever else they are doin wont be thinkin that deep.

bob u could be right, but i personally think its the level and styles of production that seem to be houses main progresion over the years.

thanks for all the comments, nice to read all the interesting opinions, like a good debate, fire back if you like :)

finally Jet, thanks for the heads up on where to post! means a lot!! gonna try that out now
