Superette, Voom and Mestar - live review/gush

Ok, I managed to totally miss Mestar like a fuckhead but Voom came on and did Be Your Boy and all was well. The vocal melody was a little erratic but the rhythm section was tight as, Murray's ricky jangled beautifully and Buzz's lead playing was basically perfect. That guy can get some nice lo-fi anti-shred going on. Great, great and great. And all too soon, it was over...

Superette. Wow. First time round (when was it, like 95?) I was too young to buy fireworks let alone go into a bar, so in spite of absolutely loving Superette I had never seen them live. I bought and thrashed Tiger, and thanks to a couple of switched on DJs on our school radio station (thanks James Mciver and Nick Reid) we used to hear it a bit at lunchtime too, which was very cool. Saskatchewan was and is my favourite riff of all time.

So, they took the stage looking like they'd never been away. The banter was actually funny, the songs sounded just like they always have, and, rare for me, I just did not want it to end. Usually a band plays an hour or more, I find myself kind of "done", and ready to go, but stay til the bitter end because, well, that's what you do. But maybe these guys got their set exactly right, leaving us wanting just a bit more. Buzz joined the band for "Waves", which he said had been recorded in his bedroom. The gig as a whole just made me want to put "Tiger" on high rotate for at least the next month, what a great band. Highlights? Well, they pretty much played hit after hit so it was a non-stop onslaught of great songs. What a great racket for a three piece too, sounded humungous.

Forums: NZ Music,

MOTLEY CRUE?! Where?! I can't find it anywhere . . . . You lie!

PS: Superette were so good that I almost cried like a little baby.

I saw you almost crying, with that spontaneous smile thing going on. I almost introduced myself, but then didn't.

I'm in San Francisco right now, so I'm not lying. Tonight I saw Regina Spektor at the Filmont Ballroom and even though I didn't really know her stuff, it was awesome. On Wednesday I saw Tom McRae play a tiny little sit-down venue in New York and I cried at that. He was so awesome that even the bridge and tunnel people stopped talking.

This isn't really a topic hike so much as a trying to make myself feel better because do you know how long I've been saying that Superette should do a reformation tour? Like forever so of course they have to go and bloody do it when I'm out of the country.

Which show were you at?
The sound at the welly show was sincerely lacking.
It lacked volume and guts, especially noticable for Mestar, the guitars just fell away when they kicked in. Nick seemed to be too busy playing with his Space Echo on the vocals.
But all the bands played exceptionally well.

I was at the Kings Arms. There was a few little feedback issues but nothing that really detracted and the band didn't get the least bit shitty about it, which I think is a really good look, as opposed to the utter tool from Collapsing Cities, who basically had a crywank about it at the Masonic some weeks back. Getting angry on stage is a very bad look...
