any ideas?

i used to live at a hall of residence here at Canterbury, and if things are unhappy in your life it's so hard to find support there. last week a girl there committed suicide, and i was thinking how can we help people like that? i used to go in there to take Bible study groups but the only people who turned up were Christians who already had lots of friends anyway and were settling in ok, and i don't think depressed people would have had the courage to turn up, especially if they think it's something you can't really believe in

i was thinking perhaps (if anyone here's in Christchurch) next year we could set up like a music tour group, where we go to places like that, where first year students have just left their families to come to uni, and we could perform mini acoustic concerts (most halls have pianos as well) at their dinner times and stuff, and talk a little bit about things like depression and making friends and other experiences like that, 'cos lots of us have kinda been through that sort of stuff and can offer advice

would anyone be interested? does anyone have any other ideas that we could think about?

Bro i doubt if the music will help because a) is it christian music? b) if someone is already depressed or dealing with issues how would music engage with that person when they are in that head space. I commend your intentions and think that the idea is good, but have you tried putting up on a notice board something like a simple flyer asking people to contact you if they needed support? That could help, that way they take the initiative to contact you instaed of abscure music which means nothing to them...just a thought, and good luck with your venture...All the best!!!

what i mean is, we could talk about what our songs are about before we play them, so we could say things like: "this is a song i wrote when i was going through such and such", and then play the songs. and then say at the end, if anyone would like to come up and talk to us later they're welcome to. which is also why i think it'd be good to get a range of people, because yes i would be talking about Christianity being a part of my life, but other people might have different experiences

it's kinda like back in College we used to have these safe sex people come to our assemblies to do performances with a message to teach us about it, and it'd be like that at the Hall of Residences because they sit in a dining hall (with about 200 students) each night for about an hour and every now and then there is entertainment, like a brass band or something, or like a talk from uni health or education services, or like guest speakers, and i just thought we could get involved with that, like set up a group of musicians with our own individual messages
