Boyband - omfg.

I don't mind that shit radio stations do shitty publicity stunts to form shit bands who can cover songs to play on the aforementioned shit radio station... but why would anyone even consider having one of these shit bands perform at the New Zealand Music Awards?

Does anyone know who runs the NZ Music Awards?

Forums: NZ Music,

// Does anyone know who runs the NZ Music Awards?

It's a RIANZ thing (ie. music industry).

So, we have a band created by one of the biggest commercial music stations in NZ, and 'music insiders' are tipping their single to go #1, when chart positions are decided by the number of plays you get on commercial music stations.

Go figure.

//Go figure.

If I think about it too much, I'll either cry or go postal.

// why would anyone even consider having one of these shit bands perform at the New Zealand Music Awards?

They're not performing at the awards - they're performing in Aotea Square prior to the event.

thank the gods for that. And I see via another site that...

Boyband is a spoof of American bands like Five, the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync.

The deal was to release one song, try get it to number one on the New Zealand charts, tour the country and then split up.

#######

Ugh.

The Edge appears to be populated by complete assholes. Who listens to this shit?

Oh, just about everybody. Fuck.

//Boyband is a spoof of American bands like Five

Umm, 5ive are British. God bless Chris Herbert. Spice Girls r 4eva!

speaking of commercial radio...

Classic Hits FM announcer Mike Baird has resigned after being charged with a road rage attack.

Baird has been charged with using a 4WD to knock a teenager off a mountainbike, apparently after the teen made an obscene gesture at him.

The high-profile radio star is also accused of driving over the mountainbike deliberately.

Name suppression lapsed on Saturday for Baird who resigned from Classic Hits FM this week after five years with the station.

His employer, in a statement last week, wished him well and said Baird had decided to take a break. Baird had been Rotorua's top breakfast host for the past three years.

Baird was granted name suppression until the end of the school holidays at a September 22 Rotorua District Court appearance.

Judge Lindsay Moore said he had granted only temporary suppression, partly because he did not wish to financially jeopardise any Classic Hits-arranged school holiday programmes that Baird may have been involved in.

"...high-profile radio star..."? really?

I just imagined this whole thing playing out with the Benny Hill theme music played behind it, and everybody moving in an exaggerated fashion like on Benny Hill, and I laughed.

Uhhhh what about the "red room" ... No green room this year because The WareWhare is sponsoring it...
And I quote from the "Designer" Peter Reid from those terrible DIY programs ... "The Warehouse has an amazing range of stylish and affordable products, We have taken stock from The Warehouse and turned the Red Room into a cool bar for the young and the hip"

uh huh....

Rraow... Hiss...

haha how funny is it that the warehouse is sponsoring this event! great to see they're giving something back after all that taking hahahaha i wonder if they will have a bargin bin set up in the red room - so all the artists can see their $10 albums on display.

I think The Warehouse might be the kings of the overstock...

In associated shitness... the Juice TV music awards were shit.

Shit (American styled bands from Auckland,) music, shit script for the presenters, shitty little crowd, shit choices for categories (Bathe in the River is GOSPEL... not Roots/Reggae.)

The venue looked wicked though.

SIGH.

Looks like somebody needs to take some classes in How To Be Funny And Not Just Stupid.

The horror continues...

(Surprise) They made #1.

Some excellent quotes from the NZ Herald article.

From programme director for The Edge, Leon Wratt...

"To get to number one on the charts really isn't that huge an achievement."

...and...

"No band has worked as hard as these guys to get to number one."

Other NZ bands take note: getting to the #1 spot isn't that hard, but no one has worked as hard as these guys to do it.

I saw that, but I assumed/hoped he was being tongue in cheek for the last statement.

He must be. No-one is that stupid, especially after bagging NZ Idol.

The public have spoken. They had this to say:
"We are fucking morons".

So I assume stations other than The Edge must have been playing this?

Tragic!

// So I assume stations other than The Edge must have been playing this?

Probably? Any commercial radio listeners want to confirm?

The Edge is a Radioworks station, so, potentially, it could also be getting spun on the Rock, the Breeze, More FM and (god forbid) Kiwi FM.

And now it's #1, other stations with countdown shows will also presumably be forced to play it as well.

Just remember getting to number one is nothing to do with consumer/listner trends. It is respective of the quantity of plays that program directors allocate followed by pre-sales to record stores, consumer trends follow from there

Hopefully they live up to their word and break up soon.

di they have to cover the Kinks? its like they found out what I loved the most, shat all over it then forced me to eat it. Now its hard to eat even without the steaming turd sauce.

Screw those bastards, they can all go to heeeellllllll....and die.

Could be worse .....
They could have done "Nature"...

Worse on multiple levels....

A good way to deal with this is to not listen to that song. It beats getting angry and posting about it on the internet.

what are you on about? angry posting is what our lives are all about.

yeah well im trained to take down a man twice my size, so if you wanna roll with me in real life lets go its on

I haven't even heard it apart from the snippit on the news!

Hey Styley go fuck yourself.

im getting ready to do some angry internet posting so just watch your back!!!

honestly who gives a shit about this group of social light hogging losers run by an even worse music humping station.

im proud to say that over some time now (reason y i havnt been on here in ages) is that i myself and another associate are in the works with radioworks for buying th rights to channel z.

Interesting....do you know how much a radio frequency actually costs? I was of the understanding it is somewhere in the vicinty of $4m. I will be amazed if this gets going in Auckland again, or anywhere else apart from the net.

incidentally for big day out updates, you could go to the official auckland bdo myspace page

to all, just ignore styley. he'll fade away.

he must be a listener to the edge or zm.

//to all, just ignore . . . he'll fade away.

isn't that what happened to Channel Z ???

I'll get my coat . . .

// I'll get my coat . . .

Because you've pulled?

Okay so maybe you should take Boy Band the way it was intended - basically an entire piss take at the pop industry. And as for Channel Z reforming, what makes you think that a format which has already been proven not to work - bad ratings which just got worse and worse and worse - will work now? And I highly doubt you will be able to afford a frequency, if and when they are available. Unless you choose to go low powered.

Haha ok tell me how many Channel Z listeners would have completed one of those radio surveys? Tell me was Channel Z a station that was looking to be number 1? Did its listeners care about been "cool" or about what a chart had to say about their music? I think not.

Ratings were of importance to suits, not staff and listeners.

Critizise more please...oh yeh, got an offer to buy us out from bfm. Why would that be? According to you, Z wasn't a contributor to radio was it because of "ratings"

To quote Bomber off from one of his recent blog posts:

"And they took Channel Z off for this station? Who would have thunk NZ music could sink so low? Oh, and the real icing on the cake - this band will 'play' on the red carpet at the NZ Music Awards - kinda like getting NZ Idol to open for U2."

taking a look at your myspace its like you want to recreate channel Z circa 2002 which was when the station floundered. The only way to make that station work is to be like Z was at the start or like they were in the last 3-4 months before they shut down - ie: playing relevant music that isn't dated and already played on the Rock.

Look at your list of bands that Z plays: Sum 41, Blindspott, Steriogram, The Feelers, The Datsuns, Alien Ant Farm, Three Doors Down, Eskimo Joe, System of a Down, Limp Biscut, The Prodigy, The D4, Shihad, Nirvana, Muse, Pluto, Grinspoon, Blink-182

ummm....aren't all these bands played (excessively) on The Rock or The Edge?

the only sensible thing CZ did, was in the last few months (after it was already decided they were dieing) they dropped their predictable rock format and played music that was currently making waves: ie: The Strokes, Interpol, The Go! Team, TV On the Radio, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, The Yeah Yeah yeahs etc..etc... When they were playing this stuff. NOBODY else was.

CZ went back to what they did best. taking songs from the bNet and launching them to comercial radio, they were once again the only commercial radio station playing 80% of their playlist, rather then playng just what every other "rock" station was playing.

No offence, but your current playlist looks like any other commercial mor rock radio station and except you don't have the massive big budgets and support networks they do.

PS. I commend what you're trying to do. Channel Z was an important platform for launching some nz bands to commercial radio, but what you're trying to do in trying to rehash the past is simply wrong. You need to actually be a leader, not a follower.

// Ratings were of importance to suits, not staff and listeners.

And oh yeah, to the people who pay to have their advertising played - they want to know that people are listening or else they're just wasting their money.

Oh, and I've filled in ratings suverys before.

I agree with Blink. Good on you for the efforts - Channel Z was an important transition point in terms of underground to commercial, and it helped break a load of NZ artists. If you can focus on what the station did right and try to avoid the things that it didn't do so well, perhaps it could work...

Sorry Blink, that list of songs isn't our playlist, just mainly the bands that Channel Z first introduced to NZ airwaves and are now overplayed on TheRock/The Edge as you said:)

Well we're not trying to kick up an old thing, we have got alot o different music from artists that aren't your usual Channel Z artists but also aren't mainstream. But don't take that as if we are just taking the name. We have got some good Bnet artists as you have listed we have got.
Im going to have to change that playlist bit, it does give the wrong impression.

No we don't have the big budget so online streaming is going to be the best way for us to broadcast and we're hoping that will be appealing. If things go good and listner cap keeps rising we hope itll catch some attention which we can get money from. If not, its going to stay an online station and also an LPF Station somewhere in Central Auckland. As they say, good things take time.

Joanna i see your point, i personally as a listener felt that it was about the music but as Angelina, ex-host, pointed out to me a while back; money is always the issue. I see now how thats important and good on you for filling out the survey. From the listeners I've talked to, they would turn down the survey if brought in front of them. The majority listeners just weren't people who wanted to be grouped or be apart of a generalisation.

Any questions or problems please feel free to ask. Advice is also appreciated:)

Hmm, I have filled in the survey a couple of times. How does doing that group me or make me part of a generalisation?

Hah. You make it sound like it's just the rebellious yoof who tell pollsters to fuck off. Fen-Daaaahl-ton and Rhem-U-er-ah housewives are probably just as likely to.

I don't think the survey companies publicise how low the rate of participation is, but I'd guess it could be around 20-25% of people asked. Try agreeing to participate in a phone survey sometime. Surprising how often they sound relieved (presumably after the previous string of people all hung up/swore/made up some excuse).

A news report
//The winner of NZ Idol has been promised a recording contract but just 10 days from the final a label is yet to jump on board........
//Sony BMG withdrew its support after releasing the last two winners' albums. Rosita Vai won last year and her album All I Ask was critically praised but received almost no marketing.

But she just won an award
"Highest Selling NZ Single: Rosita Vai - All I Ask"

Labels are showing there worth again... can't make their minds up, and tripping over themselves. Such a farce
