Can't believe no one has opened this topic up yet. I was blown away after seeing the new magazine. I'm sure Barney etc think they're very clever but seriously, that's basically child porn. If any of the many rumours are true about that guy then the photography is just the tip of the iceberg.

It's a style mag, going for a bit of the "nu urban lifestyle" angle... Some interviews, some fashion spreads, reviews of movies / music / whatever else... probably something about some restaurants or cafes, I guess. I dunno, any opinion pieces?

Hmm... "Pavement is NZ's leading contemporary culture magazine for modern youth, covering everything new and essential in fashion, music, film, art, products, clubs, life and style."
Yep, "nu urban lifestyle" is the appropriate derisive epithet.

They only come out like quarterly, so I don't think I've seen them do restaurant reviews. And opinion pieces? Ha! Apart from the CD/music reviews, everything else reads exactly like the PR sheet they got it from - which admittedly is much like almost every other NZ magazine.

Thanks for filling me in.
I wonder, tho': judging by this thread and the review that noizyboy posted below, it seems Pavement is rather well known for that kind of smut. In which case, I assume Pavement has received public criticism about it, so have they made any kind of statement? Y'know, defending it or something?

Hipster bingo time! Two points for use of words "edgy", "fringe", and "in your face", and two points for every slur that uses the words "banal" or "mainstream". Five points if they uphold "Art" as an ideology, ten points if they complain about political correctness.

And can I PLEASE have a Tall Poppy Syndrome in there? Cos that's what I'm craving.
My personal favourite is when the offending company basically says that anyone who complains is fucking stupid. This from Jenny Craig, in the herald this morning after it turns out their "Try Jenny Craig for just $7 a week" TV ad actually costs over $100 a week - "It is not our intention to mislead ... We sincerely apologise to the complainant for their interpretation."

Along with the obvious cringe-worthiness of a "thirteenth birthday special teen issue," it took only casual peering into the lives of a bunch of fourteen-year-old girls before I starting feeling the guilts. "But I'm only reading it for the articles!" I protested to furrowed brows walking by. Then I got to the "Old Enough" photo essay ("Barely Legal", anyone?) and my stomach started to turn. And then there she was: Jessica Thompson, aged ten, from Waiuku, with her rouged lips and smouldering eyes not quite hiding the haggard bags already slung beneath her peepers. I am reading a pop culture magazine, and a ten-year-old child is making eyes at me! Aside from the usual cries of "Where are the parents?", Pavement has to be held accountable sooner or later. Naked teenagers preening on all fours and ten-year-old 'it' girls don't even bother to masquerade this as art.

Chief censor Bill Hastings has conceded that Pavement had a "prima facie case" to answer over the images in a special teen issue celebrating "Lost Youth". If in breach of the 1993 Films, Videos and Publications Classifications Act, editor Bernard McDonald could be sentenced to three months in prison or fined $10,000.

ya know...i didn't think much of the girl with the lipstick, pavement has done much worse over the years. young naked girl in the bathtub covered in coffee? Schoolgirl on the bed pulling her skirt up showing off her undies?
I just thought the whole magzine was perhaps the worst piece of published media since the beginning of time. I am embarrased that i was involved (taking one photo) with that issue. The selection of youth they chose to profile were boring and uninspirational and a poor reflection on the diverse range of cultures and exciting young people really doing things in NZ. A boring magazine targeted at youth, hoping that other young people would read it....is it meant to inspire? Emo kids who like going to the movies? is that meant to inspire? and then just when you're about to vomit at another uselessly boring teenager, a depraved spread of a girl, "barely legal" jumps out at you. Just another excuse to shove some porn in there.
fucken piece of shit. Pavement often does this...it seems once or twice every year, they like to push the boudaries just to get a little press and "edge points" - but at what cost? Messing with child porn is not something you mess with, i don't care how edgy you think you are being...why don't they be edgy and actually publish a magzine that people will read and care about?
Pavement had finished a feature on camp low hum that they were publishing in the next edition, but i pulled it, couldn't bare to have to ever look at this magzine again.

Yep, Pavement has been a smutty little shitrag for sometime. Is there a link with that and this Barney person taking over as editor? Or has he always 'edited' the 'magazine'? They seem to think they're really clever for showing as many pink bits per issue as possible. I've never seen or met this editor person, but i have a mental image of a guy behind his desk, with his stained pants around his ankles, looking at photos of VERY young girls he is considering exploiting in the next issue of his jizz-rag, through a magnifying glass he is holding in his left hand. Gree-he-he-easy. He was too much of a wimp to go on "Breakfast" and back himself as well.

Well they didn't quite review the Black Seeds album so much as dismiss it like garnish in one succint sentence.
Still, I bet Rip It Up ran a glowing review so at least the serious music scribes take the Seeds seriously
