NZM on TV News - no credit??

Saw a thing on the news to night about the shihad name change... all the info was off this site, they even showed someone in the News office trolling through the forum pages.

And not a mention of NZM

Forums: NZ Music,

Saw a thing on the news last night about the shihad name change... most of the info was off this site, they even showed someone in the News Office trolling through the forum pages.

And not a mention of NZM

Missed it!

If they wanted to help NZ musicians they could of mentioned the site - especially if you wanted to see more updates on the Shihad story - lame-o's.

Don't watch TV - it's all bad.

the evening post credits "newzealandmusic.com" though. so not all bad

Fully I saw that thing on tv.. the guys posting name ideas in the forum should feel special as they scrolled through some of the suggestions.. even the piss-take ones. hahaha.

Ohhh, thats so unacceptable!! Are they allowed to do that?? SUE, SUE!!
Wish I'd seen it, what suggested names did they mention?? Any of mine?

http://www.geocities.com/propagandacrew ]

yeah I saw your name and icon....

WHOOHOO! muhuhahaha, Megaccino's famous!

ahahahahahahaa....classic....megaccino, you crack me up girlfriend! ;)

Had a flick through Net Guide while at the checkout in Pak 'n' Slave today, hey had the "best" sites of 2001.
Funny...... NZM wasn't even mentioned in the music section or even as one of the most arse kicking sites around.

Net Guide sux

Hey... I have a plan for bringing more people here, though I suppose it will mostly be Americans... Go to http://www.smalltime.com/anon.html & scroll down, near the bottom add our URL & send it away. The next person to visit will get that & (Hopefully) come here. I've been using it to promote my site.

re: the netguide top 500
one of the nz sites they did list was bandwave.com, which hasn't been updated since, oh, 1999?
at least bands.co.nz got a mention

http://bandwave.com/ ]

who does the judging for that mag... seems like they have thier head up thier arse.

I reckon they don't know shite!

I've always thought of Netguide as the guide to the internet for beginners by beginners.
The internet for Dummies as written by monkeys bashing away at typewriters.

//....written by monkeys bashing away at typewriters.

You betta STEP or be STEPPED STEFAN! ;^)

eh?

yeah we felt pretty shunned by these guys - thx a lot for your support Netguide - you are a really comprehensive and accurate view of the web - not.

I suspect that we are not mentioned deliberately. Hitwise, an awesomely accurate tracking engine, has us as in the top 10 websites that ALL NZers view (Music category) for the last quater of 2001. That means we compete with Audiogalaxy, MP3.com etc etc and still place in the top ten - maybe the only NZ based music site that does feature. Popularity /traffic wise we are up there. Design wise - well we got a few nods this year for our efforts so...
therefore I have no idea how they missed us.

I think it's because of 2 reasons:
1. We have not paid them any advertsing monies.
2. Someone suggested that the owners of MP3.net.nz have something to do with Netguide, and are bitter that we won the Bnet's. Do you know anything Noizy?

I'm sick of the media shunning us.

// I'm sick of the media shunning us

maybe you need to change your name :)

ahaha! no, I'm about as uniformed as you with regards to mp3.net.nz's affiliations except their 5% XTRA ownership. Those Aucklanders play things pretty close to their chests. I don't see any obvious link between the two. I do know they weren't *too* bitter about the bnet award -- probably less than me, in fact -- not getting nominated at all. 8-)

re Hitwise: I do know that hitwise don't track traffic from anyone using xtra as their ISP (xtra haven't bought into the hitwise scheme, and I think Clear might be giving it a miss as well), so that's about 75% of all Internet usage in NZ that gets missed in one hit. So you might want to treat their figures with a grain of salt. I got the big hitwise hard-sell at work a couple of weeks ago, in fact, and they let me have a browse around the site free of charge, and biggie.co.nz was absolutely *pummelling* everyone else in the nz music category. like many many times more traffic than anyone else. any mention of them in the netguide top 500?

And netguide: I talked with paul reynolds (editor of netguide) after the top 500 came out to give him a bit of stick about their inclusion of bandwave.com, and he said the editorial team that puts together the top 500 mag is different from the guys who look after the magazine proper, so it may just be (and appears to be) that the top 500 editors don't have a clue. the reviews of the sites that were there are pretty cursory, and I suspect they just round up half a dozen sites in a hurry, and don't look too deeply into the actual usefulness/accuracy/timeliness of each site. I remember when I was in it a couple of years back, they credited me with a lot more functionality than the site actually had at the time. I doubt there's any political motivation behind nzmusic.com's omission (is mp3.net.nz in there, incidentally? Is there an mp3 section? or just music? I don't have a copy at hand). Having said that, netguide have been quite nice to me over the years, so I may be biased. But, like nzmusic, I've never advertised with them (or anyone, to tell the truth -- bring on the advertising budget!), so their goodwill is nothing but that: goodwill. I wouldn't stress too much about getting missed out in the top 500 -- I think people who want to find out about nz music will find this site, and, as dust points out, nzmusic.com is hardly struggling for industry recognition. How many awards did you guys pull in last year?

as stefan said somewhere else "don't get me started on the media!" ... but, now that I have...

again, as dust points out, the jump from the evening post to nzpa resulted in the nzmusic.com reference getting dropped. I have friends who work in various media organisations around Wellington (print/tv/radio), and they reckon this sort of thing goes on all the time. it comes with the territory: news-providers (as nzmusic.com is in this instance) will nearly always lose their credit for the 'scoop' pretty early on. Stories get filed, someone else picks up the original story, rewrites it, passes it on, and so on... NZPA, it would seem, is particularly adept at stripping back the story to its basics. And, in defense of the media, the important part of the story is the story -- not the place where the story was first reported. On the other hand, a reference to nzmusic.com would have allowed interested parties to come and check out the forum (and have their say, if they wanted). The 'mainstream' (ie. non-Internet media) are perhaps a bit slow in realising the potential of the web as a source of ongoing news. I'm sure an online news source like Scoop would have had direct links to the forum, and I'm also sure that the day will come that newspapers will have little links (like they do in one of the nz music mags, is it real groove?) to '...more details online at this URL...' sort of thing.

shunned! dust, are they doing it deliberately, or are they just unawares?

uninformed, not uniformed. not the uniform type, I'd like to say.

see -- a 5 minute edit function would have got that one. 8-)

"shunned! dust, are they doing it deliberately, or are they just unawares?"

Ahh who knows - just winding them up - to be honest I've lost most interest in Netguide type stuff (nothing against them though - keep it up I say). It was kinda cool a fair while ago but there are more sophisticated ways of finding you way around the web these days. Good luck to em - I was more bummed for a few seconds and then short term memory loss kicked in!

somedays you're feeling like quick moan!!!

I haven't seen the 2001 Netguide Top 500, but if it's anything like the 2000 edition, it'll be like the 1999 edition. The 2000 edition seemed to have a lot of links that had appeared in the 1999 one, but hadn't been revisited for 2000. As a result there were a few sites that weren't updated anymore, and maybe even some 404s.

Whats up with the media (TV, magazines etc) ripping off content from NZM?
I supose it could be seen as a complement..... if they gave credit for it, otherwise its just a really shitty thing to do.

I might start keeping track of it.

RollingStone Mag
TV One news
TV 3 news

Anyone else?

Channel Z?

definately channel z, pulled direct quotes out of these forums

Reuters
BBC
NZPA

the evening post.

actually evening post did quote us - thank you guys.

once the story was filtered through evening post to NZPA it lost the credit and was fooked after that. I think you could justifiably blame NZPA more than RollingStone as they probably never actually came here but got it off the NZPA feeds.

The bad thing mainly is they decided to juicily misquote Tom - who has now unfortunately called all American's psycho's! He's very chilled about it though and they don't really care that much.

something i wondered about, do you guys ever edit these comments, like if shihad asked you to pull that comment out. just to save maybe some embarassing headlines, would you?
I reckon it would be fair to, especially such a possibly damaging comment. I wish you would also pull out some of Butterflys comments..but thats another story..

mostly the media are evil...

blink - nice call but dont forget her boredom buddy negaccino...

http://www.chomsky.com/ ]

blink, mostly we don't change anyones comments - although we can choose to. The only time at present is when it's obscene or just plain offensive. We like it to be totally uncensored because after all it's just really talking about music and life which ain't that controversial!

Editors and Artists have the ability to edit their posts and other bits on the site so we leave it up to their own judgement. Tom's also pretty savvy and knows what he's doing - he knows more about what is right and wrong for Shihad than any of us.

How do you feel about that - do you think we should be more editorial with comments etc?

nah. editing should be kept to a minimum. i like the fact that this isn't one of those forums where you can post and then keep on editing your message so it says

--[ edited by blink 12.01.02 ]-- etc....
like a thousand times under your comment, so no-one knows what you said in the first place.

I just like how you perfer to burn people who make stupid comments rather then edit their post's. I've been burnt by you guys once or twice in my time. Still crack up over teinas's "sucking some major mag" call

I quite like the 5 minute edit option -- once you've posted, you've got 5 minutes (or whatever) to make a change, and then it's cast in stone. Many's the time I've hit the 'add' button to instantly realise I've made a typo (or just a stupid comment), or, when re-reading the post in the forum proper, spotted something I wanted to change.

yeah the editing thing was discussed somewhere else here, don't remember where, I suggested 24 hours, but 5 minutes sounds even better. The coding could be hell though, he he, go programmers!

wow, lucky us megaccino! we were the only ones that they wanna edit!!!....now ive been a little potty mouthed troll lately, but i do regret like half the content of my posts after i post them....so i agree with noizy boy, that you should be able to have a 5 minute limit on editing...that way, when your all hot and bothered and have just added a really mean post, you can read it over and think.."actually i probably shouldnt put that" and take it out.....otherwise you just have to take it back and apologise...not one of my favourite past times.....

Hmm, I reckon longer than 5 mins.. AT least half an hour, actaually maybe 15 mins, 'cos some ppl have slower modems & it takes the larger boards here 1-2mins to load on busy days... plus it takes me a good 5 mins to type a decent sized comment. Can you really not do anything about media stealing your quotes?? Theres gotta be some copyright law that stops images of sites like this being shown w/out permission/credit.

Also, so I don't have to go to Rubicon or K'lee board...(I' busy)
Yeah, I believe you Butterfly. When Sam flux (??) pointed out your error, I thought it might be an innocent typo, as n is beside m. It's more annoying when theres 2 ns. Cos they are dumbasses who can't spell even if the words right under their noses. & megacinno would be pronounced completely differnetly.
Cheers
(By the way, I think I'm pretty mush done w/ the Rubicon & K'lee forums for now. Unless someone gets me excited again ;)

http://www.geocities.com/propagandacrew ]

megaccino - you gotta admit it was a great slip tho... come on, laughing at yourself is healthy

I'm pretty much against editing of posts - typos are a given on the net as are stupid off the cuff remarks that people regret later. I think it's much better to post an "yeah I was wrong/angry/stupid. I'm sorry" type post than to go and edit or elete what you said and interrupt the flow of conversation for people reading later.

A better idea (I think) than editing would be a preview option for the post.

And the best idea above all would be to take a deep breath and count to 10 before hitting that "add comment" button.

Yeah, I admit, I laughed when you said it. Then I laughed when Butterfly said it would be a hypocritical thing for her to say... Lol. I don't take it as an insult... I Don't mind being called a cynic. It's what I am. I just see the world for what it is. And it just happens to be ugly, corrupt and polluted with no improvement in site!

http://www.geocities.com/propagandacrew ]

hi there... now i know nzmusic.com workies would've never have changed my posts, but i am *sure* that once i typed a message here and it just dissapeared!... it wasn't important or anything so i dont mind, and i'm sure it was just a mistake as to why it disapeared, because i generally dont write anything rude or crude. heh, and that has happened to me on other websites to! maybe i am annoying people world over hehehehe. yup but i am always making typos and such.... but i'm not sure wether editiing things would be smart.... everyone here knows what is meant., even with my dreadful spelling ;-D

well then megaccino, you must love getting up every morning if thats how you see the world!! ....im an optimistic glass is always half full for me - when its raining, i know there'll be arinbow, when i see a problem, theres always a solution....and when i see a singer/band received un earned credit..screw optimism, i go troll!! ;)

no, i actaully agree with foaf, i think that an editing device isnt nessecary(spelling), it would be nice but all we really need to do to read it over a couple of times before we post....thats where a preveiw post would be good.....and those of us with tempers...(who me?) just need to learn to control ourselves....

and just look at that! i should practise what i preach....i had three typo's in that little peice...im all red in the face now....

ah what users did they mention!!! did they mention me!!! whoa... i couldve been on tv in another country.... thats a first.
