Zoom products

Hi,

What is the general consensus on Zoom products?
I have a Zoom 505 guitar pedal and it's pretty crappy (sound quality mainly).

What about other products like drum machines and multi-track recorders?

Cheers,
Paul

Forums: Classifieds,

I used to have a Zoom GFX II and a bass version of the same thing and they were pretty ok FOR THE PRICE. There were a few annoying things about it, but no piece of gear is perfect.

I'm talking about a completely different model to your 505 but we're talking about Zoom in general.

Bottom line is I think you're better off with individual pedals, but the Zoom stuff is not bad value for money.

I got rid of my GFX because it did some pretty dreadful things when run through a modelling amp. Should have kept it for recording *tsk*

Urrrgh zoom 505's
I've known many a guitarist who rues the day they bought a Zoom pedal.
It's the fact it has no resale value that kills it; most people buy one when they start out and it does a middle of the road to crap job of doing effects but its all ok. Eventually you figure out what effects you like the best and buy stand-alones. You can't easily combine effects.
Jack of all trades, master of none. Still, I'd recommend one for the budding gat student so they get a taste of what effects they like.
But Zoom products seem pretty flimsy and trying to do too much for my liking

Hey, I didn't realise we'd met, T-Dub! I'm one of those who rued the day I bought a Zoom 1010. Still, as I was dirt poor, I couldn't really complain.

Funny thing is, I still have it. Haven't used it centuries and it's got so much dust on it that it's beginning to develop its own ecosystem.

I find their big killer is the capacitance, they just suck the tone right out of your signal. Second to that they have a lot of crappy sounds. I've got a couple of Zoom units i haven't used for years, a 508 Delay and 509 Modulator (numbers could be vice versa?) All negatives aside the modulator's chorus patch is pretty good, tremolo is not terrible, phaser, flanger etc not too flash. The pitch shifter had a lot of trouble tracking the notes and giving you the right note in return. Whammy setting on it worked ok. The delay was just a piece of shit.
Also got one of their drum machines, its not the worst I've played to but not the best, its fine for practicing to.
