Prizes/Winnings

Has anyone won any major prizes from a radio station, television etc etc?? What did you win. Even minor prizes like CD's. Just thinking bout it cos I was hoping to win a prize of my life this morning on a local radio station. I won't say cos its dissapointing cos I never won - not that I got through anyway.

Forums: The Bar,

My friend won a wedding in Rarotonga from Mai FM, therefore I won dinner with Robert Rakete and Siobahn. Oh Siobahn.

Unfortunately, I didn't win the spelling bee.

Whata bad prize.. well Im only posted because there's a major prize happening on this particular station & I was thinking, they play bad music but I have to put up with listening to them cos I wanna win the prize.. think about it.. prizes are the bribes.

When I worked at SAFE in Christchurch I must have won about half a dozen CDs thanks to ... a) our non-stop listening to of RDU, and b) having the station's number on speed-dial on the phone.

I won a Neil Diamond CD&DVD from some station. They were like 'What's your favourite Neil Diamond song' so I just said the one they had just played.. suffice to say that was that years Mothers Day present sorted.

Makes me think... hmmmm there are a lot of liars out there. hahaha.. anything for a prize aye.. i woulda done the same..haha

They owed me something for putting up with their easy listening tripe!

haaard

When I was 11, ZM had a competition where they would play a couple of seconds of a tune sped up to about 4x normal, and you had to ring up and tell them what it was.

Being something of a geek, I figured out that if I recorded the morning show on my tape-deck with the double-speed option on, I could playback the tune at a mere 2x normal, making it a lot easier to figure out what the tune in question was.

And it worked - the tune was Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and, hilariously enough for a pre-pubescent 11yo boy, I won a Gillette shaving pack.

Needless to say, that was my Fathers' Day gift sorted out that year.

Not I personally, But My friend Mike has pretty much one every single competition on Active.
Just ring them and ask about Mike the Painter

Same.. a friend of mine is forever winning things from BFM then once he won tickets for a Mobb Deep concert (5 in total) he started calling for every other prize. Cruising in my car, i heard him on the radio winning a CD.. I was like: Daaam.. he's gonna be a regular now on Mai FM.

My best ever prizes were an Alice Deejay EP, and an N'Sync t-shirt that became my soccer training shirt.

Best ever.

I win stuff all the time, stuff I can remember is:

A rugby league ball off Countrywide Bank Grandstand (Philip Leishman read out my name!)
A Shortland Street tshirt from the first issue of the official magazine haha
Staff raffle at Foodtown, in my first week there, chocolates and wine - Dad's Xmas present.
Greenday CD from C4, but the bastards never sent it to me!

Can't remember much else, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

You should get C4 to post it out to you. How dare they not follow through.. think about all the prizes that are never followed through. One time I won 2 cd's from Flava FM when they first started out. They never sent it so I rang in, next thing it was double sent so I got Major Flavours 5 twice & LL Cool J twice. How sweet that was.. I was fan from there on ... *temporarily of course*.. i like to change stations.. but yeah.. free gifts on.. i was very popular in my circle for my pure kindness.

I should have, it was a few years ago though, so it would be an odd thing to do now.

Can't remember why I didn't, as I usually chase up stuff like that ... NEVER charge me an unfair bank fee haha.

I think I just really wanted to hear the CD, so choked waiting for it, bought it, then it never showed ... since I'd bought it anyway, it didn't matter.

Thought of another thing I won - a Hurricanes jersey last year! Woohoo, I people to know I am from Wellington. I love Wellington.

Good on you. It makes me think of those channel 1 ads where they're asking about 'Auckland Bashing'. Is it really deserved.. well no its not but then again im just frmo a minority group.. auckland snoots are the ones they should be referring the bashing to..hahaha.. Guess you can say Im loyal to a point.. im still proud though.. but let me stress proud for South Auckland..LOL..hahaha

Sorry to get off topic & double post but I just got an email as the result of the Auckland bashing was 78% or something so pretty much everyones saying it is deserved.. hmmmm its probably everyone else from every other part except Auckland who's voting.

//Auckland bashing was 78% or something

that's because the greater proportion of aucklanders have something better to do than texting useless stupid-ass polls for bored rural housewives and timarubies that spent a week in auckland once and freaked out from the traffic.

Auckland bashing: is it deserved?
[ ] Yes TXT 2121 with your response
[ ] Wank off

I am sorry to say to all Aucklanders that I voted yes (on the net, I wouldn't text in over it!).

I just got mad when there was that power cut earlier this year and it was all we heard about for about a week. Also the Auckland-centricity of the news. I know the population base of New Zealand is heavily Auckland-based, but if news was weighted by population, we wouldn't get ANY New Zealand news at all. So I just think the importance of Auckland is overblown by ... Aucklanders (not all, but some).

And yes, I do realise I sound like a 60+ year old ringing up Newstalk ZB haha.

How auckland-centric is the news, really? & maybe this sounds stupid, but what exactly is the problem with getting auckland-centric news? What news have I been missing?

I did a check of the national news headlines (tvnz, I assume newspapers would be sufficiently parochial for you):
* Capital's Hilton will limit ships (wellington)
* Women sought in Kahui case (auckland)
* Exclusive Brethren back in the news (general)
* Court appearance over home invasion (dunedin)
* Two dead after Gisborne shooting (gisborne)
* Roof shout for new glacier centre (franz josef)
* MP wants veto powers cut from RMA (whangamata)
* Warning for Kiwis in Thailand (general)
* Profit shortfall for Ngai Tahu (queenstown)
* ANZ customers warned of scam (general)
* Progressive deal in sight (general)
* Progress in supermarket stand-off (blah)
* Alarm over credit card debt (blah)
* Skinny look doesn't rate in NZ (blah blah)
* Supporters want Carter to step back (whangamata)
* Maori academic Sir Hugh Kawharu dies (auckland)
* Skyhawk sale frustrates govt (blah)
* Carter forced to reconsider marina (whangamata)
* Inquiries continue into Dunedin deaths (dunedin)
* South Auckland violence tackled (auckland)
* Tokoroa murder accused denies charge (tokoroa)
* Witnesses deny Brown abusive (incident in taupo)
* Thousands farewell King of Tonga (tonga)
* Progressive dispute back in court (general)
* Kiwis sucked in to mammoth debt (blah blah blah)
* Grocery checker of the year (for crying out loud! wellington)
* Hubbard: Auckland needs $20b (auckland)
* Marina society scores court victory (whangamata)
* New bid to curb family violence (general)

so, one day chosen at random, and one of the stories is the mayor demanding cash. But for an auckland-centric national media outlet, 4 out of 29 is a pretty poor showing. Whangamata got that many articles for a single issue. And one of those articles is the (must-watch) wellington Grocery checker of the year competition.

that post really highlights just how little goes on in chch.

i think the main problem with aucklanders is the prevalance of non native aucklanders who get tetchy about auckland bashing.

re christchurch, alot of sex crimes go unreported. and noone really wants to read much about the molestation capialt of the world

..and what the fuck is your problem?

i was born with down syndrome, but unfortunately i partially recovered

just observations,

bullshit

bullshit? which one? chch or auckalnd?

the 'just observations' one

serious. most native aucklanders i met never had a word to say about the auckalnd bashing, it's where they're from, what can they do about it, why would they care kind of thing. but i've come acrross a number of non aucklanders partial to the debate. even anti auckland bashers who don't live in auckland and never have.
as for the christchurch observation, you need examples?

and this is a guess, but i suppose the population of auckland has ballooned in our life time. and i'm guessing the proportion of incomers to outgoers is weighted heavily on the former, and so many of these 'nonmigratory' auckalanders, they have no point of comparison.

are you going to respond to my emails?

yes of course

Yeah, it's an impression I get (the Auckland-centic-ness), and who knows if it's actually right or not. If it does happen, I do think it is a problem. In fact, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, this northern shift of population.

Also it is fun voting yes to Auckland bashing being warrented coz I know it will get them all rarked up! :P

I checked in to an Auckland hotel once, first chit chat topic the receptionist brings up - "Why do you all call us jaffas? Haven't I been friendly?"

Well, as a born and bred Aucklander of 6 generations (and yes, I've been to lots of other cities in NZ, and the world), I'd have to say that I don't consider people who were born here to be Jafas. I think when people talk about Jafas, they are talking about people who live here but moved here from somewhere else, often a smaller place, who moved from that smaller place cos it was so small and "parochial", and when they move to the big smoke, they turn into yuppy overachieving "look at how important I am" wankers, who ruin Auckland for us natives, with their put-on surliness that they imagine you should adopt when you come from a big city cos you're important and busy and rushing around and get out of my way, small unimportant people- and the best thing, I think these yuppy overachieving smalltown wankers think, is that in a small town if you're rude, people know you, or know your parents, or might know someone you know. If you are rude in a big city, people don't know you so what does it matter? Well, I have news for them.............Auckland is a tiny weeny city, population wise. It's a very small town indeed. And those of us born here know that, and that's why we love it, and all those wankers who come here for jobs or whatever, and turn into JAFAS and ruin it for everyone with their surliness, and cocktail wankeriness, and clogging up the roads with the late model work car, you have been warned.Next time you're being a jafa, remember that those of us who were born here will be taking our town back some time soon..................

:-) not sure if you drink or not Jackie, but if you don't, maybe you should look into it .. :-) I read that with a slur and a hic cup ... :-) nicely done mate ... I'd be more cocky if but for some reason my small town name became my handle on this site .. :-)))))

//i think the main problem with aucklanders is the prevalance of non native aucklanders who get tetchy about auckland bashing.

absolutely. that, and the fat income high profile media gets from 99c text message teasers

Well said. Everyone just jealous of Auckland cos we the main city of NZ. Take that.

the most auckland bashing i ever heard was in invercargill. when i asked if the auckland bashers had even BEEN to auckland, it turned out most of them hadn't even left invercargill.

nuff said.

that is true, but that train of thought could also go for people you bash America, but then again Auckland doesnt have Bush or stupid gun laws......

It did have John Banks though!
