So, no WMDs or ties to Al Qaeda in Iraq? DUH.

Well, here's the official phase 2 select senate comittee report on the reliability of evidence linking Iraq to WMDs, Al Qaeda, etc... basically all the investigative work that should have been done prior to a single shot being fired.

Way to go. Kinda cold comfort 3 years down the track, with Operation Iraqi Freedom and the occupation since then claiming over 2,500 US soldiers and up to 46,000 Iraqi civilians.

Forums: The Bar,

meanwhile, in Afghanistan, these Canadian soldiers are having a problem some of us might only dream of having...

Canadian troops fighting Taleban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy - almost impenetrable forests of three-metre high marijuana plants.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defence staff, said on Thursday that Taleban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices ... and as a result you really have to be careful that the Taleban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa.

"We tried burning them with white phosphorous - it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel - it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

"A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those (forests) did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action," Hiller said dryly.

One soldier told him later: "Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I'd say 'That damn marijuana'."

Schwarzenegger tells Leno link to Bush is 'ridiculous'

11.20am Friday October 13, 2006

LOS ANGELES - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger distanced himself from President George W. Bush on national television yesterday, saying he was as far from his fellow Republican as he was from winning an Academy Award during his film career.

"To link me to George Bush is like linking me to an Oscar," the former bodybuilder and Hollywood action star joked during an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." "That's ridiculous."

It was Schwarzenegger's fifth guest spot on the late-night comedy show since he used a 2003 appearance on the program to announce his first campaign for public office in 2003.

From the Herald.

the republican it's okay to like.

Yeah, cheeky ass-pincher. He's really cool.

That whole business of suing the automobile manufacturers for knowing about greenhouse emissions but failing to act is just ridiculous greenwashing. Especially when you own a fleet of fucking Hummers! Oh wait, that's right, his office announced he'd sold them all (but he didn't).

Republican humour:

Why don't politicians use bookmarks in Florida?

They like to bend over pages.

// Yeah, cheeky ass-pincher.

hah! how quickly I forget.

Sheesh jet. The anger...

Every single US politician is neck deep in shit. Obama included. But remembering what kind of politician generally succeeds in the US political system, I think it's worth celebrating the small things. Is suing tobacco companies for knowing about their carcinogens ridiculous healthwashing?

Wasn't aware he didn't sell his Hummers - link?

//"To link me to George Bush is like linking me to an Oscar," the former bodybuilder and Hollywood action star joked during an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Yeah, cos he didn't campaign with Bush at all in 04 or anything. Oh no wait, hang on, even the Fair and Balanced (TM) news says he did...

I read in Grist, not sure of their source. Link below, scroll down.

I just don't really see the benefit of sinking time and money into this, as opposed to into, well, sorting out the infrastructure of California so it's not so dependent on cars, or getting research companies to bid for funding to seek out alternatives or ... a lot of things. This shit would be a lot more difficult, but it would show signs of attempting to make the future situation better for Californians rather than just making them go "Awesome, we're bad asses! Let's take 'em down!"

Actually I guess if the damages from the court settlement are awesomely awesome the state would have more to invest into doing something that actually helps Californians. Maybe.
