'We have to change our name, no denying it'

Forums: NZ Music,

ARE they changing their name? I havent heard any more...

i still think "The Osama Bin Laden Experience".

a friend suggested "The Taliband".

"The Osama Bin Laden Experience"

That's a pretty cool name - then they can abbreviate it furthur and call themselves the "OBL Experience!" Ha!

If I were to suggest a name - how about "Jonny Toogood and the Moondogs"? Or maybe "The band formerly known as the J-word"? Or how about just the "J-word"?

Scott Watson & the Marlborough Sounds

//a friend suggested "The Taliband".

How about the "Talley Band", then they could really mind their 'Peas' and Q's.

/me groans.
Argh, puns! Get them off me, get them off me!

I thought it would be a welcomed change from 'guns', Kid_A.

HAHAHAHA THESE NAMES ARE SO FUNNY!
I think j-word has to up there!.... so does taliband. keep them comming... they make for a good laugh :-)

how about trihad - pronounced try-hard

if they do change there name, what would they change it 2??

Too weird! Have any other bands ever had to change their names half way through their careers? My suggestion for a new name for our boys: "the artists formerly known as Shihad"

umm, the Alkoholiks changed to the Liks but I don't know how long they had their original name for.

Well, the Exponents were once called the Dance Exponents - and alot of folks still call them by that name.

UK bands have had to do it a bit in the past, prodigy and verve had to add the 'the' to the start of their names to avoid 'same-name' issues. suede are the london suede in the US, and the charlatans are the charlatans UK. the chemical brothers used to be the dust brothers until the US version forced them to change. closer to home, ozzie band icehouse released an album (I think called icehouse) using the name 'the flowers' and then decided to change. along similar lines I think Pop Will Eat Itself was actually the name of that band's first release, and people just started calling them that 'cos it was cooler than their actual name. I think. So, not without precendent, really...

'...suede are the london suede in the US, and the charlatans are the charlatans UK...'

It's a shame that Shihad have to change their name, but if you also lived in America and could see all the American flags flying on almost every car, you'd want to change it too. I don't really think it matters what they change it to because they rock hard.

how about "Fundamentalist terrorist war against all Americans" or FTWAAA for short?

You know, if you rearrange the letters FTWAAA you get FATWA(A) - a Muslim death sentence.

I was in a record store just the other day. and is aw a massive poster for gerling's "when young terrorists chase the sun album" and underneath it was a tiny sign reading something like "the name of this c.d is a medaphore of problems in the music indurstry, rather then the september 11th attack. the artist sends their deepest condolences to victims of the attack."

ohhh for christs sake.......everyones just so stupidly pc now!!!....its all sad blah blah but...well not everything comes back to sept 11th...some peeps have taken down pics of the twin towers because its all so sad......shouldnt they be embracing and saying 'oh what lovely twin towers they were'?rant rant rant....oh dear its stupid oclock....

well, we aren't really being stupidly pc are we? it's americans in general (or thats the impression we get from the narrowly focused segments of american media that we receive). assuming the whole huge population of America truly is unable to get over sep 11, posting on here isn't really going to help. the fact that they're grieving is an unavoidable fact, and there are worse things than a band changing its name.

it's always hard to sympathise when you're not directly affected, ain't it?

There are reasons to dislike america..........people should have there reasons.

or should be allowed to at least.... it is americas fake plastic fucked bullshit that makes people that way anyway.

yeah... I kinda feel like I've ODed on the American culture invasion.
Check out a doco on Prime TV tonight....

BBC Reports: Letter To America
8:35pm
Syrian-born writer Rana Kabbani was educated in America and now lives in England. In this documentary she travels through the Middle East, seeking to explain why Osama bin Laden’s condemnation of America has struck a chord. The rift, she argues, is not religious, but politically and that ultimately, only the Muslim world can eradicate extremism.

there are reasons to dislike america. i feel alot of those reasons and i get sick of the 'fake plastic fucked bullshit' just like most people.

but the point is, does nz not have the same thing? we are caught up in the endless inferiority complex spiral..... in some ways this is a good thing, we'll defend our unique culture to the last, but in other ways it can put blinders on our eyes and make us think we are above some poor culture traits when we most certainly aren't. let's not forget popstars was a new zealand concept, exported to almost any country (including the u.s) that you would care to imagine. where are the people saying that we are a fake fucken sell out industry?

that's easy to counter: 'oh look at all our (NZ'S) credible, original soulful musicians'. and that is true. but it's also true of america. they have some amazing acts and musicians..... the problem we have is we experience the larger than life american pop industry because it is transported over here - but not the awesome non-mainstream acts that would open our eyes to the artistry of the world's biggest music industry.

people's solution to this pop invasion is to slag off an entire culture. we scoff at american's patriotism and arrogance, but i'll tell ya what, i would love to be in a nz where we were totally proud of our country.

be anti some aspects of their country, sure, i just get sick of our terminal whining about things that we haven't thought out fully.

now the reason they are changing is cause it close to ghihad-a holy war??? but where is all the presure comming from to change?? i know they had a bit of shit go down in there american tour with the name but really..are we going to let the american public bully a new zealand band out of there name....???i am not to informed on the subject though and would appreciate being...anyone??

ps this is tig....samfluxs' brother not samflux....so dont blame him if i say dumb stuff

cheers all

ok they havent done an american tour, theyre making their cd as we speak. the whole recording industry is pressuring them to change, in fact the whole situation in america (this totally idiotic thing where a society is a little touchy about associations with an event that killed multiple thousands of their countrymen) is pressuring them to change.

theyre not, in fact, bullying shihad, shihad recognise it's probably more trouble than it's worth to keep the name, and they know its not a huge issue.

cheer jimi

tig

no worries..... sorry if i came across a li'l angry - bad day

register your own name you bastard

samflux

My dad suggested they add a 't' infront of the 'h' and an 'e' after it...clever clogs

I agree with Jimi....I know in New Zealand we're conditioned to think Americans are for the most part stupid but this is a country that spawned band like naked raygun and The Dead Kennedys, Anthrax, Megadeth .........consider all the death metal band names that could be deemed offensive

Dont blame the Americans - they may be arrogant and ignorant but THEY arent the ones telling Shihad to change their name. It's the music industry, and the record labels, the ones scared to upset anybody. I'm gutted that they're changing their name...it's what ill always know them as. But so long as they keep turning out great music then Im all for them doing what they can to be big world wide. So long as they dont turn their back on us when they do.
