How much should a band charge for a gig?

Way back in March 2006, someone asked the question "What's a fair price for live unknown bands?". Sort of carrying on from that from a different perspective, I'd like to ask you people: how much should an unknown band ask the pub to pay them?

I have a feeling aspiring youngsters may be interested in this.

So, what do you think?

Forums: The Bar,

I think we covered this awhile back .. but I think if a bands playing and the money's going to them and not the bar, then I guess $5 - 6 ( £'s )maybe even $10 ( £'s ) if they're well known respected band playing in a bar maybe, if the bar wants to make money on top then it makes matters alittle harder.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I didn't mean how much a band charges each punter, I meant the amount the band asks the venue to pay for the band to play there. Y'know, when it's not necessarily a ticketed or pay-at-the-door place.

Ah, no you were clear .. "pub should pay" on my second read put that right :-). I don't know really I mean if it's a smaller pub with less space and there for less punters, then maybe just travel costs and a few free beers, if it's a bigger pub then I guess yeah I don't really know, I don't really know what they pay here in London, but I'd say £100 upwards would be easy for the bigger venues here, maybe $200 upwards in kiwi ..??? or am I being to mean ?

At first I thought "Is that all?", but when you think about it, for an unknown band (say a 4-5 piece), $40-50 bucks each isn't that bad. After all, if you're worth more than that, you'll soon be able to ask for more when you can show the pub owner that you draw a big crowd.

I wonder if I'm asking the wrong question. Is this not negotiated any more? Do pubs have a set price (i.e., "This is what we pay bands - take it or leave")?

What's the minium hourly wage in NZ ? if a band dose an hours set that's maybe $40 / 50 an hour, an unknown photocopy person wouldn't earn that an hour, no matter how good they are at their job .. I reckon $200 upwards would be okay. But as to the direct question what do pubs pay ... no idea I'm afraid mate.

MW is $10.25 ph for Adults.
Winston First party has lodged $12/hr min for 2008 (april?)

How much for new band to ask pub?
I would tend to say , here's what it costs to put the night on , give us 10% of bar, see all the punters come, then re book with guarnteed take... as far as $ amount in Chch $400 for 3 hrs of stage time is roughly accurate, this is Pub, not club.
Licensing hours, noise levels, PA, sport on TV, bus trips are all things to factor/know about before the night starts.

$400 for 3 hrs .. that's not too bad about $133 per hr, that based on a 5 piece is about $26 per hr, which is just over the minimum hourly wage .. and I wonder how much Tax is paid on that $26 :-) ? okay if you have other expense's, Travel, equipment hire etc that'll have to be taken into account, but should be sorted before you do the gig I would hope.

//okay

"OKAY"?? I've been a software developer for over 10 years, and that hourly wage is more than I earn!

:-) yeah kinda makes you want to take up playing the triangle dosen't it .. :-)

gold coin donation... i just don't think making money from playing in pubs is feasible (not that i'm speaking from any experience)... you should only charge like $20 or more if you're playing in a concert hall or something like The Feelers and Shihad but not if you're playing somewhere small like the Dux

whoops, i just read the words in bold above. well for me personally i'd play for free (perhaps enough to cover costs - i mean, freedom to market forces if you ask for a fee that's cool) because i don't see the point in making money from pubs, i'd wait 'til i'm a big rockstar and charge for stadium concerts, small gigs are just for fun i reckon and not for profit
