Is it kosher to advertise your myspace page on NZM?
Personally, I think its a little disrespectful.

Hats off to the band that uses that as their name!

I think if you come to NZM to bring many gifts and contributions to the community, then that's awesome and if you go "oh by the way, if you want to hear what I'm talking about, then my myspace is...." that's entirely appropriate. If you come and make one post going "check out my myspace" and that's all you offer, then you are lame.

personally, i dont have a problem with that, i like to know about new music and give it a listen.. and give something back to the artist.. wether it be constructive criticism or kudos. the internet is a great medium between artist and listener so whats the problem? More time and energy seems to be going towards taking the piss out of everyone instead of what we should be doing, supporting..

We are sorry if we have caused some ill feeling, we didnt realise it would be disrespectful to advertise a song being put up somewhere else...Once again we are sorry.
I have always thought of Nzmusic as being a forum and a place to advertise goings on with Nz bands. Myspace and Nzmusic forums are two completly different entities existing for benefit of others.
Whenever i meet someone who is starting a band or wanting to involved in the scene, i always direct them to this site...Again our apologies.

Sorry being flippant, anyone who is just going onto a place to spam and not add is possibly out of line, though depends on the culture of the place. When you consider that myspace itself is taking a bit of a toll on numbers in forums you could understand if on some forums people get a little pissed off.
My thought on myspace in general.... it is a very useful tool to reach a lot of people, to host your tunes and to get your music out there as a medium in its own right... it is also potentially leading to a similar thing as, when post WW2 people flocked in droves to the new suburbs.... sure it is shiny and new (admittedly in a late 90s CSS way) but at the end of the day when everyone is their own little island and not meeting at some central hub it is a knock to the sense of community a forum can create.

Hmm well mysapce wont kill this forum. I guess when you look at it from that point of view I see your point.I never really thought of myspace as anything more than somwhere for people to check our band out.Like saying"check our new vid out"

problem is, most people who troll these forums are mainly making music. and people who make music very rarely check out other music. i have never gone to and listened to miscreant on myspace, so i presume that members of miscreant and from this forum would'nt check out what i am doing. myspace ads should probably be posted in the artists forum section. presuming that this is where fans would look.
what a boring topic.

it seems to me that that nzm has lost a bit of its traffic to myspace (and indeed forums on bands websites as they get easier to set up) and i no longer feel like this is the first stop site when there is news to be released or discussed. But maybe thats just me and i havn't been lingering here as much as i once did.
There is nothing wrong with bands linking to myspace from here surely. The whole concept of forums/blogging etc is linking information. Thats what makes the web so great; the little clicking journeys you go on.
What has let this website down is how often it just does not load and how painfully slow it can be. Noizy tells me its possibly being moved to a faster server which is long over due. Also, the forum structure is very simple. What about BBC or HTML in certain threads? Maybe these things are possible here but I am a moron on such things and like it when forums have the little bbc option icons. I think NZM has the opurtunity to hang to the role as the number one nz music discussion space but it will only happen if it speeds up and becomes part of the myspace world ie. discussion threads being linked to myspace pages etc. Of course creating these links is up to US the users to encourage.
blah blah blah

hopefully the current site is back up to a decent speed. I did a clean install a few days ago, and tweaked a few things so as to avoid the main slow-down issue we were experiencing, and it does seem to have gotten page-load times up to a decent speed. The ad-server (which is elsewhere) was the other main problem, and I've just turned off the ads entirely while we get that one sorted out.

Indeed, the new forum build is progressing along in the background, and yes, a wider range of HTML options will be available. If it wasn't for a few non-NZM related issues that Morse is dealing with at present, we'd actually be in a position to go live with it fairly shortly. As it, we're in a bit of a holding pattern, but it will happen at some point in the not-too-distant future.
// There is nothing wrong with bands linking to myspace from here surely.
I can't speak in a completely official voice regarding the linking to myspace issue, as there are people above me that could lay down an official policy in contrast to what I think, but, what I think is that people can link away as much as they want. Myspace is but another way to promote your music, and we're all about promoting music. There are times when the commercial aspects of the NZM business over-rule the linking (eg. we'd rather bands link to their stuff in the nzmusic store than other, competing online stores), but, generally, as long as you're not abusing the system (as per the forum rules), we're pretty relaxed with how you go about promoting your stuff.

Link to Myspace as much and as often as you like, or the community lets you. Respect NZMers and all is good.
I'm certain we'll be linking to Myspace 'officially' at some point.

No I don't think so. However the talk didn't get NZ specific that much, so you can probably get the jist of most of it from one of her online papers at her website below.
I did another similar thing on NatRadio the following Sunday, and you can get that from their website somewhere. 60 mins later I was in hospital so I have bad memories of that day!

we're getting out of the mp3 game for the time-being. People who have emailed admin or via the info email address have generally been pointed in the right direction with alternate solutions. Other people have more resources to throw at that sort of thing, such as...

Well, on the one hand, you've got MySpace, with millions of dollars of investor backing and hundreds of employees, and on the other you've got nzmusic.com, run on a shoestring budget by fewer people than you'd find in your average band.
