hey stefan.
I thought when Head like a hole changed to HLAH it was the gayest thing they could do, even though heaps of people refereed to them anyway as HLAH and the press wrote it down as HLAH, i still called them head like a hole. But the generation now only call them HLAH, and when i hear HLAH announced on the radio i know who it is., and i even call them HLAH now The name change would suck if "TAFKAS" (the artists formally knowen as shihad) flopped in the US, but if the album, as it should do, rocks and brings america to its knees then it'll all be good and we willl get used to the name eventually. NZer's will probably always refer to them as "the had" anyway.
Did Head Like a Hole actually change to HLAH though? I think I read in an interview that they said they never did people just started abbreviating it. I see your point though and I hope if they do change that any confusion will pass. I wonder how the reactions will be to the new name, The Phantom Menace Syndrome maybe, where on first hearing the name sounds crap but after a while not too shoddy at all.
I reeeeally hope they dont change there name, Shihad sounds nothing like gihad, well sept 4 they rhyme I suppose. If they were to change there name I recon the best thing would to do would b to leave it as The Had, then every one will know who they r still. Even if it might sound a bit gay. By the way does any one know what Shihad means ? or is that a dumb question?
jihad /Ji*had"/, Jehad /Je*had"/, n. [Ar. jih[=a]d.] (Moham.) A religious war against infidels or Mohammedan heretics; also, any bitter war or crusade for a principle or belief.
'jihad' does not mean holy war. the koran never mentions holy war. remember that book? 'jihad' means struggle. this does not have to be in a military context. even the western dictionaries get it wrong. shihad doesn't mean holy war, and what do you know, neither does jihad.
Actually, I think that's an excellent name.
Although stupid Americans getting their back catalogue will probably think that album was called 'Shihad'...
I heard that the name originally came from the novel 'Dune,' in which Shihad is the name of the battle waged between the Fremen with the help of the sandworms against the Harkonnen, Anyone care to validate? Anyone read 'Dune?' I can only remember seeing it at the pictures when I was like 10 or something. I don't think Shihad need to change their name, but I don't think it's a crucial make or break decision either.
wasnt it more along the lines of "yeah well, i was talking to jon and the boys one day, as i do, and we were trying to think up names for their new band, and i just commented 'what about the one that she had?' and basically they loved it, and the rest is history"
some radio station talking bollocks in the morning
Got this out of TNT magazine (travely type mag for those Antipodeans and Saffies you can pick up in London for all those who didn't know and probably equally didn't want to know ;o.):
"We're going to have to change our name, which is pretty traumatic," frontman Jon Toogood told Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper. "We've been in a band called Shihad for 12 years. Ok, so it's pretty dubious and it means holy war, but we got it from a David Lynch sci-fi movie when we were 16-year-old kids. When the whole thing blew up, we were like: 'Oh my God, we're called Shihad - what are we going to do about that?" Toogood said the new name was as yet unconfirmed. "But we're going to have to get one that everyone's cool with and then let the music make that name cool. I don't know if we're going to come up with an amazing name but, personally, all I want is a name that's simple."
I don't think they should change their name. It might sound like Jihad but it does not mean the same thing and any vaguely intelligent person would be able to distinguish between the 2 words and as someone pointed out Jihad means "struggle" and not Holy War.
Is it actually a real word or was it made up for the novel?
If people in America can't see that 4 Kiwi guys (kiwis? aren't they birds?) called Shihad are just making music and not trying to imply anything untoward to America by their name then they can come back to Britain and play some more gigs here in less dodgy locations so that I can get to see them play without too much undue risk in little old London town!
The US market is where they have set their sights next, if they want the US bad enough maybe they will have to do the name change. Won't change the music, but Shihad's such a cool name, it'd be a shame to lose it... :(
Hey peeps - Just to clear thangs up a bit - We have to change our name, no going back - no denying it - the reasons are pretty obvious - Sept. 11 'Jhihad' etc. We've just spent 4 months in the US and every fuckin' news item talks of the 'Jhihad against america' It doesn't matter what the real interpratation of the word is - As far as 99.9% of americans are concerned "Jhihad' means "Fundamentallist terrorist war against all americans" - We can't use the name - We stayed in an apartment complex in LA with a guy who is in the band 'Snake river conspircy' and he has a side project called 'Sonic Jhihad' the day after Sept 11 he recieved hundreds of death threats by phone and email.
I know it all seems a bit dramatic but neither NZ or Australia has ever had an assasination attempt on a prime minister - Think about how many attempts - including succesful ones there have been on US presidents.
USA is full of PSYCHOS who need only the slightest provocation to do physical harm. Think about it!
Also we wouldn't get played on radio, we wouldn't get tours and what would be the point - all the hard work to go nowhere.
It is really sad and we all feel fucked up by the whole situation but please realise that we have no choice - It's not record co. pressure or management - It's all of us and we are simply responding to what is going on.
We will make an announcement soon re: the name - until then thanks for all the support and please realise that this is not what we wanted but we must make the best of a bad situation.
PS - Shihad did come from dune - it is the battle at the end and it was called a 'Jhihad' of course we spelt it wrong and used it anyway. Funny how things turn out eh!
Mayby the guy from the snake river conspiracy got death threats form some crazed smiths fan who didnt like
the terrible version of how soon is now that band did.
Mayby some americans will like your band because your music is bloody awesome aside from what your bands name rhymes with.
And apparently Morrissey likes that version! I guess that's what the Californian heat does to you after a few years of resting on laurels and deciding what "new" Smiths compilations to release.
Shihad : gone.
Killjoy: gone.
The Had: gone.
She Had: sounds emo.
Solution: Had. All the old crusty fans can keep calling them The Had, the new kids on the block will call them that, and we all know radio announcers can't wrap their heads around the idea of a one-word bandname and always drop an ubiquitous 'The' in there.
Shihad is such a good name though!!! AHH MAN!! DAMN IT! I hate the narrow-minded, psychotic, deadly, judgemental, fat headed, band name changing, misinterpreting, money flaunting American industry!
I'm seriously heart broken about this!!!
But on a lighter note, The Killjoys were a KICK ASS Canadian band that sadly broke up in '99 :o( Check out some of their tunes! (ie. "Today I hate Everyone" or "Rave and Drool")
BUT MOST OF ALL for the guys in Shihad, I truely sympathize with your situation. Best of luck with what's to come! There's lots of fans to back up the decisions you guys have to make! WOOT! WOOT! SHIHAD!
It doesnt really matter what they call them selfs i suppose.
That said I would far prefer that Shihad stays.
Why not just adopt a USA name or some thing ?.
While were at it what about USA songs to.
Best not to have any lyrical content in them. ya know incase you offend people.
Mayby we can keep the name Shihad in Aus and NZ ?
Isn't just a small notice that Shihad have been called Shihad since about the time when America were killing people in Nicuragua a good enough explaination of the fact that the name is nothing to do with disgrunted people from arab countrys who the USA is commiting Genocide
That would be a fine idea. Afterall, two British bands - Suede and the Charlatans are officially known in the USA as The London Suede and Charlatans UK respectively to avoid confusion with exisiting American bands of the same names. Shihad could do something similar.
All this reminds me of a discussion we had a while back on the "I Hate Rip It Up" board - about American censors going bonkers in the wake of Sep. 11 - pulling from radio playlists completely innocent songs like Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water", Elton John's "Rocketman" and 311's "Down" (it may imply buildings coming down, you see). It all makes my blood boil.

the media may be pro american, but the general public is firmly anti american. it's the human nature trait: backing the underdog (who wants to see the biggest guy succeed AGAIN?). let's all jump on the bandwagon and throw shit at the u.s for reacting to an atrocity at the hands of terrorists.
