bFM - Mikey to return as brekky host?

So current breakfast host Wallace Chapman is off, and Mikey Havoc is being touted as the replacement. Damian Christie thinks this may not be the best idea in the world, citing his chronic lateness (8:30 arrival for a 6:30 show?) as the main reason he doesn't make the best morning show host.

So, Aucklanders (and interweb bFM listeners), whaddya think? Is it worth getting Havoc back, even if he only makes it for a half a show each day?

Even putting aside his recent televisual disasters (the last, live episode of his own show was best described by a mutual friend as "The Abu Ghraib of television"), for a radio station that is supposed to be all about moving forward, pushing musical and editorial boundaries, reinstating the host to a show he started a decade ago just doesn't make any sense.

Add to this the fact that Havoc is habitually, pathologically late. Near the end of his previous stint on breakfast, it wasn't unknown for him to turn up at 8.30am, for a show originally scheduled to start at 6.30am. Bad traffic was often the excuse.

When Hugh Sundae took over breakfast, Havoc returned after a brief absence to fill the 10am - 12pm slot, although with the exception of his first day, the show generally got underway between quarter past and half past ten. Even docking his pay for every minute he wasn't there didn't fix the problem.

Having been there since 6am, Hugh soon got sick of filling the extra time waiting for Mikey, and would switch the computer onto automation until Havoc deigned to arrive. "He could at least wait for me to turn up" Havoc once grumbled to me. The irony seemed lost on him.

Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedooooooooooooooooooooooooom.

Mikey Havoc was like, awesome. In 1998. That was a million years ago. I remember my flattie made a mini doco on bFM in 2000 as part of his degree, and he interviewed Marcus Lush who used to host breakfast, and Marcus was all "bFM should be a training ground for fresh new talent" my flattie cut that with footage of Havoc talking about himself and how awesome he was, and it was hilarious because Havoc was obviously so stale then. And that was six years ago.

Nail on head.

Meh.. like Dubber says, I'm not so keen on being shouted at early in the morning.

I'm sad that Wallace is leaving/has left. He was really good, and teamed with Noelle they will be very hard to beat.

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine (who is in his early 30s) was ranting about how bFM weren't letting in any new talent, and it was slowly became a station staffed by old men. Well, it looks like little has changed.

It seems like there are people at the b who have been having a good time there for many years, are nice and comfortable there, and don't want to give that up. But they must. They must let go and move on and do other things. Otherwise all it'll take is a bunch of enthusiastic young 'uns to come along with some internet radio station (or something like Fleet FM) and bFM will find themselves pwned.

"Reinstate Wallace Chapman as Breakfast Show Host" petition is now live online at...

I live in the Tron now so miss bFM but a lot of my auckland mates have complained that "all they play is fucken boring garage rock now". They seem to think it's become about getting your mate's band on the air, or being seen to be digging the fresh new shit hitting the shitty little rock clubs in town. (Not that it's all bad, but there seems to have been a LOT of bandwagoning going on these last couple of years)...

I remember listening to the b every morning on the way to work. Hilariously it would take me only about 20 seconds to figure out if Havoc was sick or away: if a song played that long without being interrupted by talking, yelling or a phone call then Havoc was not there.

Basically Havo was/is a pathological egotist. I remember getting fucked off because he was playing Welcome to the Jungle or some shit. So I called him and said "Dude, name your 5 favourite Kiwi artists" which he did. So then I said "With all that awesome groundbreaking shit out there why the FUCK are you playing Guns and Roses? Seriously? Is there not a better use of this airtime right now?" He prattled on some bullshit about reliving the past and then fielded calls from 25 munts in a row jacking his ego back up for him "Don't listen to that guy Havo you're AWESOME man!"

Fuck that.

Hey b, lets get progressive again eh?
