how did it all begin?
my first favourite band was Savage Garden when i was 12, 'cos we were buying a stereo and it was the CD the store clerk put on to show us how it worked and i loved Darren Hayes' voice! then when i was 14 i started listening to bands like the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox Twenty. then i started listening to female singers, like Sarah McLachlan and Mariah Carey. then when i was 16 i discovered Radio Rhema and have loved almost every song that gets played on their since then ('cos of it's mostly pop-rock genre), my favourite musician is now Sara Groves
what's your story?

Man, I tried to write it out but it took forever (because I'm so interesting and amazing).
Roughly:
from 12, serious pop - Peter Gabriel obsession, plus Pet Shop Boys, George Michael (only after Faith, when he got all worthy and boring), Eurythmics, etc.
from 15 - started raiding library music collections and magazines, contemporary UK indie (Ride, Curve, My Bloody Valentine, Danielle Dax, Carter The UNstoppable Sex Machine, PWEI) + Goth / industrial nonsense (Sisters, Cure, Front 242, Coil, Chris & Cosey, NIN, Ministry)
from 17 - started going to dance parties and writing dance music. from here into all kinds of electronic listening music and started conceding that some hip-hop was OK. Mostly stuff by white people with angst - Consolidated, MC 900 Foot Jesus. I guess I was into Massive Attack's 'Blue Lines' too.
20-21 - completely over industrial and goth stuff, right into "electronica" and what I guess was "trip-hop". The record labels Warp, Mo'Wax and Ninja Tunes started to dictate my tastes for a while. Started opening up to the things that influenced all this stuff and fantastic dub reissues that had started coming out. Also got right into 80s synth pop - OMD and Human League in particular.
from 23 - really "got" simple, baldly expressive stuff like soul and reggae. seems bizarre to me that i went from a teenage goth fan to DJing Active's soul show.
and somewhere in the last 7 years I entered lena o's third phase of musical appreciation...

I was trying to figure out just how lame Savage Garden actually was, but when I ran it through my lame-o-meter, it went way off the scale, and then exploded.
